Sweeet.
I noticed that it has a cable connection input - does that mean that it would pass a tv signal to the vga port and then to the projector? I realize it wouldn't scale the image like an N6 would, but this could serve as an interim step if it allows the tv signal to get to the pj.???

hmmm not sure, i did not even notice that, have to check that out. VCR out to DVD to projector. (VCR acting like a tunner)

I almost bet it would work. Most people have their DVD tied into an entire system. Cable box - VCR - DVD Player - to TV, or some combination ending with the TV, so the DVD player must pass the input down the chain - still I would like to now for sure... may have to call that 800 number.

May 13 2004, 09:39 PM
Called the 800 number - it's not an input, it's an Audio output. Bummer. Tech guy said the unit has no inputs.

I was getting a little excited over that thing, and then I tried to look at what else they made [the ad says it is 'the top of the 200 line' ] and that appears to be the only product they make?
I wonder if those audio outputs can run into my suround sound dvd player instead of buying new speakers. . . probably that optical audio would do it. Time to learn what that means.

So how do you think the quality of the VGA output would compare to the Component output connected to the Viewsonic N6.
Would the straight VGA output give any difference in quality of output compared to Component.
Is the N6 still a better choice?

May 15 2004, 04:34 AM
wow that's cool. hell, for $60 i'm going to get it. i don't want to move my computer to the other end of the house, and i can't afford the n6 yet. this is just what i need.

I would emagine the VGA out put would be better than the compnant, plus is has progresive scan which will greatly improve the quality.
Now all we need is a DVD player that plays divx and xvid (avi files) with VGA output.

would it support the HD DVDs? [I do not know if I even have one or if my current player would work with them, but they seem to be getting a lot of press lately]
the web pages has this section
Features:
[stuff deleted]
Video outputs 4 (composite-, component-, S-video and VGA)
Resolution PAL 720x576; NTSC720x480 lines
That would not support 720p widescreen?
[the MicroSoft web page for those HD movies that was posted a few days ago says these are the resolutions: resolutions noted of either 1280 x 720 (720p) or 1920 x 1080 (1080p). (Resolutions vary per clip.) ]
I guess the next exciting lesson will be on movie format/pixels versus being able to see it. The player probably would still show the DVDs, it would just be seen like any other movie? or is a HD movie like a 32bit software and DVD players are like 16bit, so they would not be compatible?

I just ordered the DVD player - should be here by friday..
Love the N6 but the REMOTE is THE absolute worste I EVER USED. after 1 week the menu button no longer works. Now the arrow keys on the OSD are starting to go.
I know I can get a universal remote. But I shouldn't have to. I just paid the $158 plus tax.
If this DVD unit with the VGA works better than the N6 - the N6 is going back. I don't need the TV inputs of the N6 - the quality of the TV is no where near that of DVD
So we'll see how this works.

Got the Yamakawa DVD player today ---- 1st testing... EXCELLENT.
Many features -
Has controls for HUE - SATURATION - SHARPNESS - BRIGHTNESS - GAMMA - LUMA
Along with the many features and outputs.
THE remote is excellent..
Viewsonic N6 - your remote is the worste I ever used. I have to send the product back to Buy.COM just to get the remote replaced - said it would take 10 days.
VIEWSONIC should get with it. and can that stupid remote control.
So far this DVD player is great.
The only thing I don't like is the width of the DVD player is 16 inches wide.
I will test with the projector tonight - But the initial results just going through 1 of my 21 inch Mitsubishi CRT monitors is excellent.

sorry for not starting a new topic but was wondering if any of you use an ATI TV WONDER card for your pc....any thoughts or reviews?
I'm really wanting to find a good solution for dvd and tv.
this dvd player here looks great but how would you be able to watch cable thru it?

I have the TV WONDER...it's brilliant for watching TV on my PC. But why would you want to put your DVD through it? If you are going to use your PC in the set-up, then you could use the DVD drive in the PC and run PowerDVD.
I use Dscaler with the TV Wonder and it's great for playing my PS2 games on my monitor!

As much as I hate to admit it... With 1st results without tweaking too much or spending too much time with the new DVD player..
Although it has many features. It seems the N6 with component output gives a little clearer image on the projector.
No complaints with the Lumenlab designed projector.
I will see if I need to tweak something a certain way on the DVD player.
Edited ... Sat 4:PM Central Time...
So Far there is no comparison - The N6 quality through component - is way better than the VGA output of this DVD player - The N6 with no tweaking is way better. Through the VGA out of DVD player it seems like there is more screen door effect which is not because of the projector. Also the VGA output is not as clear as the N6.
I don't know what I can do to make the DVD player look better. But who knows - Maybe I'm missing something.

N6 is probably scaling the image to 1024x768 where as the DVD/VGA combo may be forcing the lcd display to 640x480, so screen door would much more noticeable for sure.

screen door is the space between pixels of the panel itself not the actual resolution, so on a 1024x768 running at 640x480 you get no difference in screen door effect, try changing it on your computer and compare, i have run at 640x480 and also 800x600, just gets bigger icons and such but movies really did not look any different at full screen to me.

Hrrrmmmm... Do you have an answer for his problem then? Maybe it is higher contrast image from the DVD/VGA? I'm grasping at straws here.

I bought the Yamakawa to get direct VGA into my projector. When I go to the info menu on my benq based projector it shows that the Yamakawa is only outputting 640 x 480 at 50 Hz and there is no way to improve the resolution in settings that I can find.

. That's lousy because now I'm going to have to buy an N6 anyway and I could have used my old DVD player with the N6.
Yes, the Yamakawa has lots of features but I wouldn't use it to show off my PJ without something like the N6.
Also, I figured out that some of the analog outputs for surround are mis-labeled. We watched a whole movie with the rear surround coming out of the front speaker and vise versa. Now I'm using an optical cable instead so it doesn't matter.

I contacted Tech support today - for this DVD player.
They said definately the VGA output should give a better picture than component.
But they are looking into the problem. Yes the VGA output is not very clear on this DVD player..
But Tech support will get back to me. He said there should be a way to tweak the VGA output..
I am waiting and will post back with any further info..

Tech Support informed me of the bottom line so far..
In a Nut Shell - THE VGA output is Crap. Excuse the condensed version of the bottom line.
The VGA output resets the resolution of the monitor. Sadly - So far there is no way to over ride this.
Must stick with the N6 -
by the way Viewsonic sent me a new remote.

hey you guys , do a little experiment, on your computer, run a dvd in full screen, on 640x480, then 800x600, and finally at 1024x768. you might just be surprised at the results. See how much a difference you can tell? You are still using the same amount of pixels, your not droping any of them, but try it 1st before you respond.... just curious what ya think afterwords.

Its exactly the same remote - but it works...
They sent it free.
Just call Tech Support - they will ask for the serial number of the N6 -
They will send you a new remote.
To them they would rather send the new remote - no questions asked - so they won't tarnish their reputation.
I still don't know how such an awesome product came with such a poor designed remote.

hmm, not sure if this can go exactly in this topic. But either way Im sure someone can help me out.
I havn't built the projector yet, but am going to once I know everything I need to do and get.
Anyways. Pretty much the projector I hoped would only be used through my direct tv satelite. But after hearing a lot about quality im questioning it. My questions however are...
I would need a n6 right... (or something to its equivalent but n6 is the best?)
Could I just have the reciever connected to the monitor through a n6, or what would be needed)
How bad would the picture be?
And is it possible to connect a sound system in someway... or how would I achive sound with it connected reciver>monitor.
I also belive that the 7" monitors being used (if it is the liliputs) you can get them with tv tuners, so would it be best for me to wait for that, then connect the reciever to that monitor.
Any help is greatly apreciated... thanks.
