Oooh snap! I broke in half a 20 (or so) pin connector for my LCD panel! Sorry for the bad pictures, but you can see the general idea of what happened. I'm curious if this can be repaired, or if there are parts available to extend this (perhaps an extention that begins with male plugs.)

Also, would anybody reccommend superglue in this situation?

Edit: See the last post.... the connectors are broke, a new cable will not work... I need to solder 20 wires within an inch... any idea where I could get something like this done?

Thanks

Any help would be appreciated! I really don't want to lose the LCD because of this little connector sad.gif

If I where you I would try to put the pieces back in one at the time just take your time it should work The glue may work also

If there is no metal connection between the two sides you should be ok. Even then you should be ok. Probably can just get a new cable if you cant fix it.

Heh I'm a complete moron... I totally didn't even think about just getting a new cable.... thanks for the replies guys.

Anyways, I hooked up the thing, and the connector wouldn't go all the way in. It displayed the image, however everything was a little garbled... like if you set your resolution or hz too high on your monitor. I hope it isn't a problem with the FFC or other connections, but would this one make sense since this is the display connector?

Thanks smile.gif

Anybody know what kindof cable it is? There are twenty tiny wires, but I don't know a damn thing about cables. Should I just take it into RadioShack and should they have what I need?

Pictures are a bit fuzzy but it doesn't look like you really harmed the wires only the plastic connector, you should be able to just bold it together plug into socket and then glue it, it won't come out again but it should work, unless you damaged a wire the screen should still work, so if its acting upe there maybe wire damage. If the cable is shot you could just point to point wire and solder. Do you know how to solder or have a friend that does?

good luck at radioshack my guess is they will just look at you funny. and try to sell you a cell phone.

as for this you should be able to install this back where it belongs and be good to go.

It turns out one of the wires is damaged..... and since this does not go directly to the board, and should plug into a connector, I don't really want to try and solder anything in there, i'm pretty sure I would bridge a connection.

The only reason I say a cable is shot is because when I plug it in all the way, the one wire does not go in fully, and the picture on the LCD is garbled, which I believe would be the fault of this wire.

I really, really, really hope I can find a replacement for this... I wish I had a start on a place to look sad.gif

Edit:

I know how to solder, but I'm really not too good at it. I got some advice to put a razor blade between the connections while I solder each point, would that be a good idea? Thanks sad.gif

Update!

On one of the connectors (on the end that broke), the pin inside the connector (on the board) came off inside of the cable end. So I suppose the next logical step in this, would be to find a place that can solder 20 wires inside of an inch without bridging any connections.

Can local PC stores do this? Where would you guys reccommend to have some of these sortof things soldered? I'd do it myself, but I am really not this good, plus I don't have a thin tip.

Thanks,

Ken

I doubt a local pc place can do this, as the industry standard is toss-and-replace. What you can do is get something called solder-wick...it's braided copper strands that soak up solder when you heat it up. Go to your local hardware store and get the smallest tip you can find (when I went to Canadian Tire, they only carried one tip which was a medium-sized tip. This worked fine for me and I was soldering hair-like wires (see my plog). One by one...solder each wire at both ends (making sure you get the correct order! Nothing worse than finishing, and realizing you got it backwards!).

If you accidentally bridge the connections, just lay the solder wick on top of the bridged connection, and the soldering iron on top of the solder wick. Then the solder will soak up into the wick, and your connection is unbridged!

--Edit--
It looks like a large chunk of your wires are still intact. Does this fit on the pins alright, just missing the last bundle of pins? If so, you could do a hack job of it and solder the last 6 wires on, but keep the first 14 wires (thus saving you a bit of trouble with the solder)

--edit again---

and if your not willing to solder it (looking in the f/s list you arent), and nothing else is broken on it, would you consider selling it (to canada), as I have a friend whose been watching me build my projector and is very interested in building one for himself.

Hey thanks for resurrecting this topic everybody smile.gif

As far as things stand right now, I've been looking to get a new, stripped LCD... even though the LCD panel from this is intact.

I believe that cable would work fine, however on one of the boards a connector pin has completely broken off (and was encased in that broken connector... d'oh), so it appears that the only way to completely fix things right now would be the soldering solution.

I know its a little unclear on what I said... but I'll try to communicate it a little better.

The part attached to the board (the male end with 20 pins), is not intact. When the female connector broke (see picture) it took one of the male pins with it, and broke it off the board. When i try to count the pins in there with an exacto knife, there is no pin at the 8th spot, which leads me to believe this is what happened.

If the cord is just sitting around unused, I'd love to give it a go if you'd be willing to sell it for a fair price (i.e. not like $50).

Thanks!
