Full Version: Is the S400DD too much for Hami?

Since my 17" OHP projector died, i'm desperately in need of a new one sad.gif .
While i want to mount the PJ onto the facing wall of my projection screen, i have to increase the throw.
Distance from wall to wall is about 5 meters (15feet).
On that distance, even the Pro lensen give a too wide projection blink.gif .
Wich the total size of the projector in mind, i decided to make a 8" hami projector.

Designs i like are this one (www.allinbox.com) and for instance this one (www.allinbox.com too).

But i'm worried about the brightness of the projected screen. By using a S400DD lamp, i'm certain the amount of lumen reaching my screen is sufficient, but i'm not sure if my hami will like the size and heat of this lamp unsure.gif .

I searched the PLOG's but i mostly found 250W lamps in combination with hami screens.

The PLOG a did find using a S400DD lamp in combination with a Hami screen is Brain's 8" Joy Toy.
But even Brain is at some point having complaints about the S400DD.

QUOTE
Brainchild: You are correct. I was hoping by pushing 400w it would be bright enough and it is up to a 6' screen size. I am remaking the light engine now around a different lamp/reflector combo.
and later on:
QUOTE
Brain: Less power but more usage. A panel this small really needs a great reflector/condenser set up.

And after that:
QUOTE
Brain: The lamp I used in this model is the same lamp used in the 15" pjs (S400DD). It does not have enough lumens when the light cone is reduced to the 8" panel size.

Then there was silence after the last post dated 30 jun 2005.
[/edit]

Is there any progress on the 400W bulbs in combination with the Hami screens?
Is there advice for me before i start ordering?
And isn't it better to use a pre-condenser lens with a 8inch screen?

I highly doubt 400w is too much. You need to remember that the difference between 250 and 400 is not even double light intensity. People already complain that diy projectors are not as bright as comercial projectors so I would go as bright as possible. The brightest you can make your Hami I would think is using:
160mm back FL fresnel
400w double ended MH
pro mirror reflector
condensor

In terms of the heat you can use oven glass also know as ceramic glass to trap most of the heat in the light chamber. You can then suck it out with a 100cfm fan.

Dude I am working on a hami pj soon, just recieved my hami from ebay this morning. I check out all in box a lot too, it is fantastic for ideas as they specialize in small pjs. I usually use babel fish to translate the forum to pick up tips. I have noticed that a many few use 400 watt lights with fantastic results. They buy double ended ones. A shop the members frequent regularly is this one http://www.exclusiv-online.com/shop/index....in&lang=en&up=0. Ill be getting my light from there.
