I've used the varifocal triplet lens from an OHP, because I liked the focusing ease and the right-angle mirror mount for installation in a vertical projector. But you would likely get better results using a larger triplet like the standard LL lens.
And I've used the entire light engine - 400W halogen bulb, spherical reflector, and transformer from an OHP (and even the cooling fan

). But the drawback is that it has a lower color temperature - more reddish, which isn't as terrible as you might be led to believe. And it also produces more IR than a MH bulb - but much less ultraviolet. And bulb life is much shorter. Overall however, I actually liked the results better than my 400W metal-halide light engine, because it was much more efficient at sending light through the LCD.

You probably can't use the fresnels from your OHP, unless you have a small LCD panel.
