I just purchase two FTR9964 e-boxes from ebay, the first one cost me $30 thats shipping included and it did not have a remote control with it and after I replace my N4 with the e-box it came on for 5 min and cut off and I could not get it to stay on so I thought I got a bad unit I figured $30 wasn't much to loose so yea I found another one that not only had the remote but the instruction manual too so I bidded and won that one $50 dollars I figured not bad.
So I replace the first one with the second one and the same thing happen @$%! but the only difference using the remote I could get it to stay on long enough to produce a picture for about 10 seconds ,so I wind up calling Philips tech support and what they told me was the e-box when it's turn on it looks for a signal that tells the e-box the display monitor is a Philips plasma tv and this is the only way the e-box will work.
So now I have two big a-- boxes that don't work so what's do I do, yea thats right it's time to explore and see whats inside where's my tools, just when I started to take out the first screw something said try the AV forms, so I did and I'm glad I did because someone there had the same problem and resolved it without doing major surjeryand the key was having the remote.
After following his instruction the e-box is now a stand alone reciever and is working very well, the picture quility with my regular cable tv is a whole lot sharper and with the the added controls from the e-box the picture is brighter too.
I didnt get a chance to connect my dvd player to it until Christmas Day,I tried it with s video and I couldn't get a full screen picture but it came through on the PIP screen so I tried the high output connection GRN,BLU,and RD and WOWWWWWWWWW, and these where some $3 cables I had lying around , the pciture came to life I don't have to use my PC to play my movies anymore,I was saying to myself this got to be HD, my entire family could tell the difference in both the DVD and cable picture, so I do recommend the Philips FRT9964 e-box but with the remote.

STEPS TO TURN FTR9964 TO A STAND ALONE BOX

1. Make sure the you do this on a monitor so you can see the the power button change to green meaning the monitor is recieving a signal.

2. Turn the e-box on with the remote control and put in 062596 +Menu you are now in the Customer Service Mode (CSM)

3.Now enter 062596+ info key, you are now in the Service Alignment Mode (SAM)

4.Scroll down to "Service Option" and then to "Miscellaous"

what resolution does it output?
Litherish
Do you use it with your projector? I'm assuming so but...
RaginRudolph
I don't know for sure what resolution that the e-box puts out but I'm very pleased with my picture,I purchase an OPPO Digital OPDV971H with DVI to play on my 17" LG with DVI and they are compatible with each other this is for my second PJ, but the e-box right now is connected to my first PJ and I'm using an old Samsung DVD with cheap RGB cables and that picture is better than my PC DVD player

Rudolph, How do you like your oppo DVD player? I wanna get one but I haven't seen any pics of how well the upconversion works. DO you have any screen shots? Sorry to get off topic.
mikyd1954
it has standard VGA out to the pj? and it has vga IN to the ebox?

Active Control Plus+ - Active Control Plus+ is a unique, intelligent, and proactive control system, which continuously measures and analyzes the incoming signal 60 times per second to automatically adjust settings for optimal picture quality. Active Control Plus+ also uses a sensor to adjust for ambient room light, the room gets brighter, so does the picture.

The above feature I like. The below feature I dont think I do... I think it would be anoying to have the movie float up and down the screen... no matter how imperceivable...

APAC™ (Automatic Phosphor Aging Compensation) - When black bars are present on screen (either on the sides or the top and bottom),APAC™ imperceptibly moves the picture up and down or back and forth helping to prevent the dreaded screen burn-in. Think of APAC™ as a screen saver for your television.

Only time I have hooked it up was to see if it will play in my new 17" monitor which I have't strip yet but I do plan on trying it with the e-box in the next couple of days at that time I will be posting pics.

Mikau

the I think the bottom link will take you to where you can purchase a new one for about $110

I have watch movies and regular tv in all mode that the e-box provided and I can assure you that you cannot see the screen moving

I'll post again after talking to Philips tech support about what exactly does the e-box do, if it does up scale to HD or does it simple pass thruogh what is being sent it.

All question concerning the e-box can be anwsered here:

Can these picture moving capabilities and automatic brightness adjustment be disabled or controlled manually? That would be nice.

And how about brightness, contrast and gamma adjustment. Does it have that?

Ragin Rudolph,

So how does the picture of the Phillips box compare to the N4? Is it a noticible difference?
RaginRudolph
The n4 cannot stand up to the e-box please go to the link I left in my past post and there you can read about the e-box from people who are using it as a stand alone system.
You can either disable or set to zero all of your color controls but way would you if your going to use this as your reciever.

I connected my oppo dvd player to the e-box and it also has controls, contrast, brightness and saturation is just a few.
I love the Matrix Revolution but it alway played dark on my old set up, not anymore the picture is great,so are the dark sceens of Gladiator.

O I forfot to mention I'm projecting on a white wall theat has not been painted in 4 years,I'm savng for a da-lite screen
camera exposuer for Gladiator was set at 1.5 all others are set at 1 I'm also holding the camera by hand so there was some movement
