Previous ATI drivers could not display widescreen formats on 4:3 digital displays (connected via DVI) without stretching the image to the full height of the display.

ATI driver 5.13 now has a new setting that rectifies this:

Advanced View-> Digital Panel Properties-> Attributes-> Use Centered Timings

Now select a widescreen Custom Timing in Powerstrip and away you go.

It works.

If there are any Linux users, the NVIDIA drivers support this as well. No ATI support as of yet.
