Great results. Really impressive.
kjudki
I have been out of the loop for a few weeks. I just ordered a UV filter today. My projector is still working great after dozens of movies.

My next project will be to darken the projector room (formerly called the living room) for daytime viewing. Also I'm going to need to get an N6 to watch sat TV when I don't have a DVD to watch.

Having the windows tinted is not very helpful, although the heat reduction is nice if you use a semi-mirror type.

Blinds on top of the semi-mirror tint is not very helpful either, not even dark green ones.

Lining the draperies with blackout cloth is my next and hopefully final step.

looks great. i have a benq 567 also. did you just saw those controls off the front? im kinda trying not to do that so i can still get everything back together if there is a problem with the lcd. i probably just worry too much it came apart good but havent fired it up yet. rolleyes.gif

Just bought the guide a few weeks ago.. Going to be a while before I can start because I just bought my first house. I have been looking at all the different results and ideas. I keep coming back to yours as one of the best. Hope mine turns out as well as yours.

Have you come across any problems in the past 6 months of operation?

Thanks for all your hard work. Took Lindsey's quiz. Tell her good luck from the PJ Community

Kept waiting for some metal to put into the black category, but alas, there was none.

We expect to see a thread with the results of this study, Kent. smile.gif

That's really cool.

Can you guess which of the 4 audience members built the projector?

Yeah the guy who's forced to sit behind the box. Can you see from there? I guess it's better than some guy's fat head in front of you in the theater.

Awesome projector. You said you are going to work on a ceiling mount, how is that progressing? Also I saw earlier in the thread that you work at one of the LSU Med schools. I am a second year at LSU med (the north LA one) and I was talking to our computer tech support guy one day about how I had modified my tivo, he mentioned there was a guy that worked at the school that had built an at home projector. Would that be you? Our Computer guy's name is Ken. if so it's a small world. smile.gif

Edit: lol, nevermind I checked out your quicktime VR's and answered my own question. Cool pic of the BRI. smile.gif

Still one of the best projestors @ LL

I see your working on a ceiling mount. hows it comming? I thought you might like to see my mount, it may give you some ideas. http://www.lumenlab.com/forums/index.php?s...opic=1088&st=40

I like how you put the benq controls on the side, more handy than an exposed pcb board....

kjudki,

How are you? Just popping by your page after a long hiatus, your projector is still looking as good as ever. cool.gif

All the best,

hey kjudki is this a 15" monitor and what if you have added cold mirrors to this pj wouldn;t it be better than right now and do you have a specific measuremnts for this pj with angels and lengh where frenel lcd lamp and etc should go. OR DOES ANYONE KNOW WHERE I CAN FIND 15" LCD PROJECTION PLANS WITH EXACT MEASUREMENTS FOR THE BOX. also anyone have their 15" pj done can you please send me the link to your forum. thank you

Kjudki,

I hope you are still monitoring lumenlab. I see that you placed silicone right on the LCD panel. Was that only on the non-pixelized part?

Have you seen any detrimental effects from placing the silicone on the panel itself?

It definitely doesn't look that way by the results you have posted on your PJ!

Thanks.

I know Dynamat has a heat insulating sound pad that sticks to the underside of your cars hood, that is very heat resistant, and has excelent sound damponning qualities. You can find it on ebay or auto sound store.
Sounds and looks like your going in the right direction. I cant wait to get mine started.
kjudki
The silicon II was only on the non pixel part of the panel. I do have a soft edge on my projected image from the framing getting in the way but it is no big deal when we are watching movies. It is a little annoying when using the PJ as a computer screen because menus and icons on the desktop are partially cutoff. dry.gif

Here's an update on the use and abuse of my Projector.

Incident #1:
A few weeks ago my family watched a movie when I wasn't home. They forgot to leave the fan running for cool down. The only damage was to the plywood box which got hot enough to warp both sides out about an eigth of an inch. That warping makes the lid fit badly wihich causes light leaks and air leaks. Remarkably the LCD and fresnels are fine. (My fresnels are sandwiched between glass) The warping also causes some of the frames inside to not fit very well. With a bit of tape here and there, we still watch movies on the PJ. This was a real bummer and I would never build one of these things again without an auto-timer or a thermostat.

Incident #2 (Don't try this at home kids):
A few days ago, I went to another room to get the Monsters Inc. DVD for my 7 year old to watch. Meanwhile she was pushing the projector cart into position. She was pushing it sideways and the small castor wheels caught the edge of a throw rug. She pushed it right over. My PJ is very heavy. I would guess that it weighs 35 to 50 pounds. It fell from about 28 inches onto a hardwood floor. It made a big crash when it hit. I was not happy. I picked it up and set it back on the cart. Examing it I couldn't see any broken glass. I put the lid back on, plugged it in and it lit up. I seems to be fine and we have watched several movies on it since.

I was very lucky. This is also a testament to the durability of the BENQ monitors and the Lumenlab design. ------I want to build a new enclosure for my existing optics/electronics, ceiling-mount the sucker and upgrade the controls to include a fan control timer or thermostat. -------Kent

sad.gif Very sorry to hear about the projector, I have printed out aspects of yours to include in mine. Hey look at the brightside with that kind of weight better hitting the floor then the 7 year old. Sorry I'm one of those glass is half full guys. (read I have a 8 year old and a 5 year old and I have had to lose a few things the hard way also)
Moshea
I heartily recommend adding a temp. control for the fans. Its under $20, makes everything a 1 switch operation, and is incredibly easy to impliment.

I'm also glad to hear that both the projector and the daughter were fine after the crash. If we had a projector when I was that age, and I knocked it over, I would have become intimately familiar with a high velocity power cable on my backside! biggrin.gif

smile.gif Nice job Kjudki, the screen shots look great. Hope mine comes out as well.
I'm still waiting for LL for the bulb and ballist.

Yes, I have a phase adjustment. I just didn't know what "phase" refered to. That will change the dimension of the image on the screen?

I will play with it.

Hey there.

Great job on the pj!!

I happen to have a similar monitor (benq fp557v2) and also have a phase and clock adjustment, but it doesn't do much. Were you able to adjust yours with it?
I have to resize mine due to the fact that I screwed up some of the ribbon attached to the lcd, and now have more than an inch that is dead on the right side, so I have to resize the screen as well.

Thanks a bunch..

nice - i think i will do that idea instead of the pvc focus

Yes. I think it looks better than a peice of plumbing. biggrin.gif

Here are a few detail shots of the focusing box out of the hole:

great results! i have one request, can you post specific dimensions on this focus box, i would like to build it and include it in my projector, thanks!

The dimensions are not critical. Just build the box big enough that it is out of the way of the light path. You DO need to be very precise when you cut the hole so the focus box slides without binding yet not so big that there is light leakage around the soft velcro gasket. Measure 10 times and cut once. That is my motto.

Good luck.

Kjudki, how did you make you lcd board extemsion cable? i am using a Benq and have the same problem.

Thanks!

Look at post #29 on my project for a picture. It is just ribbon cable like you would use to connect a floppy or hard drive to your PC. The end connectors are just parts form radio shack. hey just snap onto the ribbon cable and make contact to the inner wires. You need to cut and resolder some wires to make sure that you are extended the pin data from one end to the same pin on the other end. I hope this helps.

By the way. Here is a cool website hosted by a friend of mine:

Enjoy!

Amen,

Thanks for the illustrative pictures. Also, using the soft side of the velcro is a great idea to prevent light leaks.

Here is my flashing/ductwork. I hope that it is out of the way of the light path. I used 5/16 T-50 staples instead of buying a rivet tool and rivets. I just bent over the staples on the back side of the flashing. I think it works just fine. I plan on laying down metal flashing on the floor, walls and lid of the light chamber area.

So how is this duct being used in the cooling. It looks odly positioned. Its neither near the lamp nor near the lcd?

It doesn't need to to be "near" anything. When the box is all closed up, air is pulled from the room into the box through a slot just behind the LCD panel. The cool room air continually passes by the panel under the tempered glass and into the light source chamber. It is then sucked through the louvers past the power supply and ballast and out the back of the projector. This is exactly how the lumenlab guide explains it. It is nothing new from me.

I see you're still alive kjudki. smile.gif

I just want to say thanks for this plog/topic - it's what convinced me to buy the premium membership and start my building a pj.

How's it holding up 2 years later?
