Well the semester is drawing to an end and now I have start on a psone project. Actually what has been holding me back was the light source, I originally planned on using an HQ bulb but decided the room it took up didn't merit anything, when there were much better alternatives for small screens. My buddy who had helped me build my first projector picked up an old film strip projector at a garage sale, and brought it over to see if I had any use for it. I took it apart last night, and hooked the wires back up as best as I could for the light engine, and to my surprise it worked ( I was worried that it would blow on me).
Now what I need to know is if I should seperate the light from the light engine that is preassembled, or use it to my advantage. Here are some pics.

Here are the two psone screens stripped down, one doesn't work because there is a missing capacitor on the board. I am planning on doing the VGA mod in the future but will build the pj first so that it doesn't hold me back, and I need to buy a new soldering iron because mine doesn't work.

Mongal, glad to see another LL'er taking the psone plunge. As for the light engine, USE IT! Halogens are way hot and that setup from the slide projector is perfect for getting the light to the lcd without all the accompanying heat. There should be a cold mirror in that setup so the heat doesn't transfer to the screen. Plus it gives you a prebuilt lamp holder assy. I'll be ordering one from surplusshed if i can't handle the heat on my 410W halogen OHP bulb in my psone pj. Good Luck!

I'm considering building a projector with a PSone LCD. What are you planning on using for fresnel lenses? I'm looking for some cheap ideas. I've heard of people using some product from office max, but I haven't found any links to that product yet.

I like the slide projector idea. I'll be looking around ebay for a cheap one. Does anybody have any suggestions as to what kind to get?

id say go to office max or any office store and get the page magnifires.
or go on Ebay and i hate to say this.
BUT go ahead and buy one of them 150 INCH TV kits.. that has two
"lenzes" in it.. same thing.... they just buy bulk..

Sorry to screw around with the plog. but thats my suggestion!

That should be the link to the page magnifiers i'm using for my psone pj. They have a focal length of about 12.5" You can look at my second chance plog on my test setup to dbl check the focal lengths. I think it's on the second or third page. Of course the easiest way to get a working setup is to use ohp parts. check your garage sales and local school districts for surplus. A lot of schools are moving to digital projectors (dell mp3200, etc) and are chunking ohp's left and right. The ohp will have a lot of what you need for your setup - Fresnels, light source, fs mirror (if you're folding), and if you find a glass cutter brave enough most ohps have tempered glass on the stage. Just my opinion. Plus you'll already know the focal lengths of the lenses because you can measure the distances while they're still in the ohp and get them. I'm using my cut down ohp fresnel and one cut down office depot magnifier to cut the fl in half on the lamp side and double up my brightness. Now if i could just work out my heat issues...... wink.gif

One more thing, if you use the condenser lens/mirrored setup from the slide projector like mongal has, you shouldn't have that hard of a time controlling heat that hits the lcd. I've also been told you might could eliminate the lamp side fresnel but i haven't seen that setup yet.
