That thought came to me but why white and not the murky greenish gray of a powered down screen? But I'll be checking that.Sure enough the power save settings were still default and were shutting down the monitor but I'm still puzzled as to why I got a white screen instead of a "powered off" screen. I guess I just don't understand what the energy saver really does. Also, maybe if I'd waited a few more moments the screen really would have turned off completely? Wait, it just came to me - powersave shuts off the backlight but puts all the crystals into a "white" state. That makes sense.

Actually I think it just may be the way that lcd looks when it's turned off with a powerful lamp behind it, the 14.1" screen I'm using does the same thing with no power at all plugged in. Or is it like a really white white, like whiter than me? When mines turned off, the light is pretty white coming through, and it makes my collimator rings totally visible. Then when the lcd is powered on it completely blocks the rings visibility.
Durachko
Nope, mine is clearly white when on but a murky greenish when unpowered.

Edit: What I mean to say is when my screen is UNPLUGGED and NOT SWITCHED ON it's murky greenish looking through it and the projected image is murky greenish. It appears when it goes into a powersave mode it's white and so is the projected image. That make sense? biggrin.gif

In any case it's kind of a silly point. laugh.gif

Dude!
I finally got a chance to get back for a bit and you post screenies while I'm away!. Excellent! So how about some of the standards for us so we can observe your "slow and steady" work?

Looks good so far! I cant wait to see the end!

Back to glacial progress. dry.gif Anyway, I did cut out a frame for my triple fan cluster and mounted them in special foam. Next I'll wire 'em up, spray 'em flat black, and get 'em into my projector.

They'll be wired in series (2 and 2) along with a similar fan for keeping the fresnels and LCD cool. I like to use a lot of fans running slowly both for redundancy and to avoid too much fan noise. smile.gif

You really need the Coolermaster fan controller!

$18.xx shipped, and a $5 rebate to drop it down to $13.xx Mine is on order.

Durachko
Some screenies - for whatever they're worth - on my commercial screen. It's from TigerDirect.

Comments:
  • All have DaLite samples hanging at the top. The order of the samples is (name/viewing angle/gain) - Matte White/60°/10, High Power/30°/2.8, High Contrast Matte White/50°/1.1, Video Spectra/35°/1.5, Glass Beaded/30°/2.5, Da-Mat/60°/1.0, High Contrast Da-Mat/45°/0.8, Cinema Vision/45°/1.3, High Contrast Cinema Vision/50°/1.1, Pearlescent/40°/1.5. The samples are obviously only useful mostly for the white screen image.
  • I can see the attraction to gain but am not concerned I have none with my budget screen.
  • The more restricted viewing cones are very evident but I feel I could readily live with them.
  • The blue haired girl consistently looks more bluish to me when I view the image on my monitor but in real life she looks fine.
  • I am beginning to understand all the comments regarding orangish reds from most lamps but again in real life my eyes/brain readily adopt.
  • Gosh but I love that tiger image. ohnoes.gif laugh.gif
  • You can easily see my blacks (dark scenes) are getting lost. Gotta work on that.
  • Notice how the bottom of my projection gets chopped in the Lumenlab test image and white screen. dry.gif sad.gif
  • Work continues . . . smile.gif

If we get 100 people to get samples, then we could tape them together and build free screens!

Sorry but can you rephrase your question? I'm not quite clear as to what you are asking.

Or maybe I can just answer anyway. The connections are just lying there on the same piece of plywood the panel is lying upon.

Did that help?

The red arrows is what i mean. If the frame and lcd were standing up on edge what would keep the panel from sitting on the ffc cables. I think i see the black piece holding about 2mm of the corner of the panel. Is that correct? If so why did you not use a little more of the corner? If not how are you supporting the panel from the ffcs?
Durachko
AHA! Now I understand. My build is vertical. I fold with a FS mirror. The LCD sits horizontally in use. The little tabs simply keep it aligned and are just indexing tabs. smile.gif

I got done with Quicksilver a few weeks ago and have picked up The Confusion to start when I finish my current book. He's very diverse; Snow Crash and Diamond Age are SciFi.

You'll be truly finished before I am. biggrin.gif His other books are on my short list. I suspect I've read at least one of them though. I'll find out when I read the first pages. laugh.gif

I'm a huge Stephenson fan. The Baroque Cycle was fantastic, but Cryptonomicon is his masterpiece (so far). Little trivia tidbit... unless I'm way off base, I think Snow Crash was the first book to use "Avatar" in the internet/virtual reality sense.

Question: Rated for positions BU/BD. I'm assuming someone has tried one horizontal? Any problems forecast? Also, I'll likely give her a go with my existing overdrive capacitor. Rated life 20,000 hours. Hmmmm . . . these are soooo short lived compared to commercial projector bulbs. tongue.gif

Oh, it was $21.90 shipped on ebay.

HEY!!!!....ok, I see,.....just don't show any screenies, ok?!!!hehehe

Gotta get one of these 2 wired ones. I'm really thinking yours can go horizontal and my old one is the vertical model with the single wire.

BTW, better bust out the meter D, you might see a few more lumes with this cdm.

We're trying to get to the bottom of that in this thread. I have an email in to Philips for clarification, but so far no response. dry.gif
arizonavideo
I would guess that the two wire and the single wire lamps may have the same arc tube just a different support structure. This may affect the life of the lamp with some mounting positions but I still think most people will not use the lamps past 50% of the rated life.

The Philips should look good and the CRI is high. I still don't understand your old lamp was the LL T15 on HPS S51 ballast?

Either way a 400 watt lamp with good color for $21.00 is a deal.

Seems a reasonable assumption. Nice to hear it straight from the horses mouth though if we can manage it.

I started with the LL T15 on an M135 then bought your S51 for my MHDE lamp. Now I just felt like comparing this Philips ceramic since it'll run on the S51.

So how did you get rid of the burnt flesh smell,,,,, LOL
Durachko
Okay, so, my brother-in-law is visiting in 2 weeks and bringing his eVo.

I intend to do a side-by-side of my projector and his eVo.

Anyone care to suggest just how to do the test so afterwards someone doesn't say "Why in the &%$# didn't you do it THIS way?" laugh.gif

I'll not have my ceramic ready by then so I'll just compare with my current lamp.
Natural Newbie
full black evenness, lumens, vignetting, which one has more "pop" in red green and blue, and contrast ratio would be a good place to start, oh and resolution.
Durachko
I fell flat yet again. sad.gif

Oh well, lame but side-by-side. smile.gif An eVo compared to my DIY. Sorry I couldn't muster the time and energy for a more detailed comparison.

The images are unaltered aside from shrinking in PhotoShop.

Click to view attachmentClick to view attachment

You'll likely immediately note the aspect ratio difference. We were both so bleary eyed from a long day we didn't realized the difference until after we powered everything down and took a look at the pics on the camera. blink.gif

I haven't looked at the EXIF info but it should be there. From memory I used the Canon Powershot S30 night mode and the shutter speed for the DIY was 0.5 seconds whilst the eVo metered to 0.4 seconds. I took no lux readings.

My impression remains the same as before - the eVo is plenty watchable and the convenience of being able to tote it around far outweighs its downsides.

Note my DIY isn't fully "calibrated" for optimal color and contrast/brightness nor has this particular eVo seen any DIY fiddling. We didn't have time to tweak any of the eVo settings either.

Maybe some year in the future . . . like maybe when pigs fly? tongue.gif
Lothar
I presume DIY on the left and Evo on the right? Did you have the screen sizes matched? I assume that the screendoor effect was much more noticable on the Evo.
