each to his own i guess... probably best to figure out what the problem is versus throwing a whole bunch of software at it... K-Lite has saved my neck though when video won't play unexpectedly... especially for presentations and the like.

Yes. Its definitely a personal preference and a user style. Sometimes you have to bet your whole pot and hope for the best...especially when real world issues are involved.

I run a very lean driver system. As a consequence, I am now going to go play Dungeon Siege II with the expansion pack while my computer is downloading 4 simultaneous data feeds and controlling the house lighting system.

The DS2 game, btw, has been running nonstop for 4 weeks now...

Gaaaaaaaaawwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwd, I sooooooo wanna do it! Nope....not gonna say it! Although a couple years ago, I used to dj on internet radio and my show was called "G's Spot" or "The GSpot" for short...and I'm sure you can guess the tone of the show.

Anywho....back on topic....looks like you've got some really nice results, D! Lookin' great...I'm starting to get that itch back. No, get your mind out of the gutter, I'm talking about going back to the projector project not the projectwidow....though now that I think about it, that doesn't sound like such a bad idea either wink.gif

Okay, I haven't fiddled much but why bother when I have the collective conscious of Lumenlab at my beck-and-call? smile.gif

I installed the drivers for an Xbox controller to play Halo on my HTPC - rolleyes.gif see SJ's post just above rolleyes.gif - and it works okay but the weapon firing doesn't come close to how smoothly the mouse works for shooting them dang critters. (Not to mention the fact that I totally suck at using a contoller of this sort compared to a keyboard and mouse - but that's another issue.)

I get uncontrollable bursts from my weapon(s) when using the controller whereas the mouse gives me precise bursts perfectly coinciding with my depress and release of the mouse button.

Why the trouble? Is the driver coded inefficiently or is it not high enough up in the interrupt hierarchy? Can it be fixed? How?

I don't know for certain about this driver/controller, but if you are going into a USB hub that might cause some of your problems (we've seen this alot where I work with users mice), just generally erratic behavior.

Why does everyone force me to display my ignorance to the world? laugh.gif

Thanks zprime but when you say "USB hub" you mean one a them thar thingies that stick into a USB port and they then turn it into more than one USB port?

I've got the controller plugged right into a USB port coming directly from the motherboard.

Hmmm, maybe I should try some OTHER USB ports???

Mice are known to be kinda skittish anyway. tongue.gif I suppose it's sumpin' ta do wit bein' at da bottom o' da food chain.

If your plugged into your mobo you shouldn't have anything to worry about....now that's not to say you might not have a flakey onboard controller....but that would be far less likely than a hub being flakey.

I have an xbox s-type controller to use on my pc. The wires have been spliced and reconnected(except the xbox's yellow one). Once it's properly soldered and all, the xbox is a very good controller for the PC. There are no weird control issues and everything works as should, nothing ever goes wack and just start moving by itself like the logitech dual analog controller. Even jamming tons of buttons it still works fine. The controller has a very thick and strong feel to it, so it's really comfortable and it feels like your holding onto something rich. It's a good controller, though it might be better to try a 3rd party controller, some of the flaws are the direction pad. It has that circle one instead of just a flat square pad. So in fighting games and such, it will be much more sensitive that you press right and only right to do your move combo. If you press slightly down while pressing right, it will know it. Also, playing emulated playstation games aren't the best with the xbox controller because it doesn't have 2 L's and 2 R's button. Maybe the x360 controller has it, but I don't own one so I don't know if it does for sure. I am assuming it does though.

Heres instructions on how to do it.

I've seen powered hubs (that never seem to come with the AC adapter) cause all kinds of weird problems... maybe the power circuitry acts as an antenna of some sort...

eh...

what happens when you load the controller up as just a generic?
Durachko
Hmmm . . . first, thanks for all the help regarding the controller problem folks! cool.gif I just stumbled upon a review that poo-poo'ed using a controller for shooter games. Maybe I was being overly optimistic that it'd help to use a controller? I mean, I find it MUCH easier to target stuff with the mouse as opposed to the analog joystick of the controller. Perhaps that's the general consensus? Or is there just a significant learning curve switching over to a controller such as the Xbox unit? I pretty much burned the hot key layout into my brain already and am quite adept at targeting and blowing away the nasty critters in Halo with short, controlled bursts. With the controller I'm like a baby learning to walk. The targeting reticle just roams aimlessly about the screen while the aliens flail away at me and even appear to sneak around back and give me grenade enemas! ohmy.gif I think it's back to keyboard and mouse fer me. tongue.gif Now if I can just figger owt how to defeat them spiked critters that gots me stymied fer the moment. I managed to take one of 'em owt but the other one promptly squashed me like a sluggish cockroach. dry.gif

Here's that blurb from gizmodo.com:

At the Seattle Gamefest, Microsoft Hardware manager Robert S. Walker said they were looking at modifying "the right analog stick on the controller to make it more conducive to the precise movements used in shooters and various other genres." This is great news, since it's really a bitch to aim with any kind of precision using an analog stick instead of a mouse. Plus, Microsoft says they've got no plans at all to bring a mouse and keyboard to their console. This new controller won't replace your two-stick, one-d-pad affair, but will be used as a supplmental dry.gif [sic] tongue.gif controller for FPS games or games where you need more precise control. Think of it as how a driving wheel would be useful in PGR, but would get you owned by zombies in Dead Rising. In our opinion, they should just break down and make a keyboard and mouse controller for the 360, then charge $99 for it and make a killing. – Jason Chen
