We used to have a three-legged possum living under a big rock about thirty feet from our kitchen door. It'd come out at night and dig into the compost pile and snitch any leftover birdseed that had fallen to the ground. I have a movie of it somewhere. Figure it must've lost one leg in a trap. Had a dog blunder into a trap once. All okay in the end. It's the rabid racoons that drive me nuts. wacko.gif

We have a family of porcupines that like to come over and chew the sides of our shed. The glue that they make T-10 out of is quite yummy to them...
You can always tell when they have had "Dinner Out". Our deep grey shed, with fresh brown wood bites out of it...
mikyd1954
have you tested your lcd yet ?

No, but I've looked longingly at it several times and shed a few tears. tongue.gif Soon . . . soon. (In geological time that is.)

We have that trouble too. I once went to the local farm store (Agway) and asked if they had anything to put on wood siding to prevent animals from chewing on it. They gave me this look wacko.gif and said they'd never heard of such a thing as animals chewing siding. dry.gif

LCD ( in this case...) stands for Lustilly Considering Doing-it....

Behr semi-solid stain seems to deter them. They dont seem to like paraffin.

I told her I may get her a hazmat suit for her birthday..and she didn't think i was a bad idea...she'd have a heart attack at you guys' houses smile.gif

Inspiration to get back on track. One of the first, new DE lamps from Lumenlab. I'll fire it up ASAP and get back to building. biggrin.gif

These should be released to the general membership in the near future. cool.gif

Edit for posterity: These lamps never made it into Lumenlab stock.

oh sure, increase our enviousnessss with your new bulbitude.... hey... were the salts in that one red when you got it like in the new t15 lamp? (well, at least one person posted a pic of red salts in his new t5 bulb)
Durachko
No and that is really a point of confusion for me since I fully expected the red salts. huh.gif

So, I'm always confused anyway and perhaps I just don't truly understand what this bulb REALLY is.

I was kinda wonderin' who'd pick up on that. wink.gif

Where shall I ship your cigar? laugh.gif

Or would you prefer a Kewpie Doll? (spelling?)

Mikyd..Your wife and mine must be related.

And "MR D" that's a mighty fine looking bulb if I must say so myself. blink.gif biggrin.gif I am really digging the size.

I think I need one of those for PJ #3. dry.gif
Durachko
Fired the DE with my M135 last night. Fired immediately and ran stable. I'm unclear on the precise feeding requirements of this lamp though.

Already working on getting my pre-con installed and getting back on track with my build. smile.gif

I will mention two things I noticed:
  • The M135 seemed much noisier running this bulb compared to the Ushio T15 PS (no longer sold here).
  • This bulb really created an odor I would call ozone-like. I always use sunglasses or a welding helmet whenever I might expose my eyes to the unshielded lamp emissions and my eyes were irritated by this lamp somewhat when compared to the T15 PS. Just something I wanted to note but I don't think it's gonna be a problem in the long-term. Time will tell . . .
elken2004
that smell goes after awhile,,, this HQI did same thing two years ago when fired first two times,,, its the U/V reacting with the quartz

AND dont look at the bare lamp especially the first few hours,, it will settle
elken2004
Durako,,, can you get a spectral line chart of it at all?

Been digging like crazy trying to find our little gizmo(s) for doing that but I can't seem to turn them up. I continue to search . . .

May have to break down and make an elkenoscope! ph34r.gif

That or bring my junk to work.
Durachko
Lookee, lookee!!! Found something I didn't even know we had!

A Bausch & Lomb Spectra Projection Kit.

Sweeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeet...........

Time to plaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaayyyyyyy.........

Pretty much simply a diffraction grating of 600 grooves/mm.

Unless I find one of the other self-contained gizmos we have/had I'll make do with this.

Just gotta figure out how to set it up for optimal results.

My turn.

Growing up on an island out in the pacific ocean we have problems with brown tree snakes (nonvenomous to adults) crawling themselves into our homes. Grabbing their tails and immediately whipping them around like a cowboy prevents them from striking most of the time. Must have killed 20 during my years and bit twice.

anyhooo, carry on.

Rem: Get outta here and work on yer PJ while the wife and Nerd are gone! tongue.gif I'm jealous. biggrin.gif

Jerked the T15 PS outta my lightbox last night and came up with a quickie mount for the new DE.

I'll bolt the sucker to the side of my lightbox on a couple of pieces of tubing which will allow for some adjustability.

Got my condenser holder figured out as well. Maybe today I'll cut that out. rolleyes.gif

No.. what I'm jealous about is the Rockin Lamp in your lightbox. Whoaaa.....it just looks beautiful.
Makes the box even look cooler too. smile.gif I really hope it performs well. smile.gif

Just fix all my mistakes and it should be really good. biggrin.gif

Seriously, I think those "heat baffle" double walls I installed are not necessary.
SIMUL8R
Sweet looking lightbox D. The words Twin Turbo popped into my head.
Durachko
Thanks for the compliment. Initially I wanted the redundancy of two fans but later thought it might be nicer to blast the back of the pro-reflector to keep it cooler. Plus, the reflector would act as a nice deflector to direct the cooling air around the bulb and not directly on it. We'll see how this really pans out in the end. I'm contemplating a little overclocking of the lamp so I'll have to play it by ear as far as how hard I drive the dual fans. Just hooking 'em in series instead of in parallel dramatically lessens their noise. Thanks again Sim.
Durachko
Working on pre-condensor lens mount. Made a template then transferred reference points with a punch to a sheet of metal. Cut it out with a bandsaw and nibblers and now I've got a mount. I'll "hang" it off 3 or 4 screws going through some L-brackets fastened to the sides of my lightbox to make it adjustable.

Ahhhhh... very nice. smile.gif

Nibblers... wish I had thought of that long ago... a metal cutting device that is affordable ! (I don't do much metal work so never think of these things)

Do I see this correctly ? 3 tabs hold the lens from falling through, and 3 tabs keep the lens centered ?

cheers,
gs

Thanks. I was really happy with this when I thought it up. I think it's very elegant. Simple and elegant.

Nibblers rock. They are slow though. sad.gif Not really all that bad for one-offs.

I keep bugging my brother-in-law to buy a CNC plasma cutter and go into business making lightboxes for Lumenlab on the side.

Yes, 3 and 3 tabs. Three points form a plane. One of my favorite sayings. I neglected to spell that out in my very terse description.

Hope it works okay. See no reason it won't. smile.gif

I purposefully put some fingerprints on the condenser but they don't show well. wink.gif

Nibblers are the best thing since sliced bread.
DC that a sweet looking mount. Are you planning on holding the lens down with something off the three upright tabs or are you thinking of letting gravity do the job? Or maybe just bend the tabs over slightly? Just wondering about moving the thing when its done...

Still...its very nice!

I mulled it over and finally decided if gravity fails then I likely won't be watching my projector anymore. I may have a change of heart but I think it'll be fine. The lightbox should never experience any harsh movements. (Famous last words?)

well, now I know how to mount my 6" lens when I get it.... nice work chachi, oops I mean durachko...

Everything gloriously assembled minus the iris.

Will try to fire this at ~500W with an S51 ballast sometime in the near future.

MOTH BALLS
Now don't be chasing around those little flying things...just head down to the ol Wal-Mart and pick up a box.

A little known fact that it will repel snakes and keep them away. Of course it will prob smell like your grandma's house to but hey life is about choices. biggrin.gif

Hey did you fire that light up yet?? What we waiting for, an invitation? tongue.gif tongue.gif

Thanks for the idea. How many moth balls? Dang but they must be teeny-tiny little things. biggrin.gif

And how do you tell the males from the females? Ah, if they've got 'em at WallyWorld I don't have to worry do I? wink.gif

Gonna try like heck to fire it tonight and test my fallen-in-combat LCD. Keep yer fingers crossed and don't step in any more potholes Remmy!! smile.gif

(I've had reasonable success with moth balls repelling mice but never thought about the snake thing. Thanks again.)

Edit: Yer gettin' long in the tooth. Use the nerd as a hole probe. Kinda like a seeing-eye-nerd? tongue.gif

"The spread BOSS, the spread.... is much better!" But really, depending on the focal of your precondenser to be used with the 220mm fresnel. I've tried with a 12"fl precon and 220mm fres and preferred the 6.5"fl precon with the 317mm or 330mm fres. Arizonavideo did find a 9"fl precond seems to work well with the 220mm fres. It's really a matter of personal preference but the 220mm setup should give you more lumens because the light source will be closer to the fres.

Now, with regards to the mothballs and snakes, wouldn't it be easier and more effective shooting them with a .22 cal then throwing mothballs at them or did you DIY a potato gun for this?...............JUST KIDDING!!!!
TESCORP
Now that you've teased us with that nice looking light box, any sneak peeks at the enclosure its going in to?
