Well I have made a decision to try and breath some life into an existing RPTV . A 60" Mitsubishi is the shell in which I want to attempt to build a low end projector. I do expect a loss in brightness and resolution.
1. Is this something that I should even attempt?
2. Will the quality loss be such that a viewable picture will not even be present?

Here are is what I am considering to use.
- PSone 5" LCD
- Light Engine TBD
- Existing Triplet looks like it is around 1.5" FL and roughly 95mm.
- FS mirror for folded path.

See attached sketch.

Thanks,

I was thinking along the same lines with a PSOne I have. Using a delta type lens, Alot of TV places just throw away the older Tv's because its not repairable, so if you can get it with the scren in it and also most have a FS mirror inside them already.

I snagged a "tossed to the curb" RCA. It is a CRT based unit, 49 inches I believe. Screen, fs mirror and everything is intact. As far as I can tell, it got tossed because the flyback is shorting out (makes a nasty zapping noise, smells bad and even smokes a bit). I was thinking of replacing the flyback and trying to resurrect it as is but now I'm inclined to try converting it to lcd projection. There is a group buy/offer going on in another thread for the Toshiba 8.9" screens from the portable dvd player. Finding a lense for it might be an issue (9" crt lenses are expensive and hard to come by), as opposed to using the psone screen Joe mentioned. The psone screens seem to work well with the overhead pj lamps but a 250watt or even a bit lower should work more than adequately for the Toshiba or other small screens. It seems reasonable to attempt it so I say go for it- I am...

ok, not sure why but I was checking out some of the optics today and using the focal calc . 4" image projected to 48" wide at 46" distance, which puts focal length at closer to 90mm. Using the sun I get 38mm.

Anyone know why or if I am doing one of the methods wrong?

Looks like I may need to fold the light path and put the LCD close to the lens.

I have decided to try some different lens. Apparently the existing lens has some corrections for a curved CRT. I could not get a focus across the entire image. Either the edges or center would only focus.
Still waiting on my PSone to arrive and a new lens. The lens I am trying is a smaller diameter than what I really wanted but could not find anything else with a 95mm FL.

Yes, I should have closed this out.

I am going the 15" panel route with standard lens kit.

I started a plog to document the progress.
