do you people think one of these will work as a lamp for projector?? if it does i generates a lot less heat which is really good because i can have passive cooling on these LEDs

.. I'm not sure about better efficiency at light emitting, but I'm sure that cooling of this items will be much more efficient than cooling lamp ..

well, you'd need like 200 of them..... (200 * 30 lumens each = 6000 lumens *.06(average lcd transmissiion) = 360 lumens - 20% (fresnel and triplet maybe) = ~290 lumens..gets you into the neghborhood where we are with the standard MH bulb

I think you will find the "led" question has been asked many many times.

The long and the short of it led's are not ready to take the place of a MH lamp, they just dont "do" the same things.
You are not going to get something for nothing with led's, sure one or 2 may not seem hot but but many of these 1W led's togeter and see what happens.

Now please dont let my rants stop anyone form trying, but for now led's just are not ready, That day may come sometime, heck I rember when blue and "white " first hit the market. now they are everywhere.

Now if you want to play with something how bout fiber optics???

I agree, but I imagine it may be only a year or two before these become almost do-able...I mean right now 200 of them is fairly pricey, but increase the efficency and lower the cost(and the heat) and we are on top of it!

... may be cca 20 pieces of 3W RGB's luxeon clones will be enough (~60lm each) ... but there is still problem with solving light direction ... by efficient way ...

I agree its only a matter of time (and research money ohmy.gif ), when we start seeing them used in more consumer Pj's then they will be closer to being affordable .

LEDs are LESS efficient than MH lighting. They produce MORE heat per lumen of light than MH and therefore consume MORE power per lumen. So by the time you are producing the amount of light that you get with a MH lamp, you are producing more heat, so the passive cooling idea goes away. There will be a lower temperature at the lights, though, because the heat is spread out more, but there will be more overall heat energy to remove from the projector.

The led light engine has been done. It was just recently posted. He is using a 8.4 inch lcd and the projected image is 100 inch diagonal. The results are here. http://diyprojectorcompany.com/phpBB2/viewtopic.php?t=1282

The LED idea pops up time and time again. No offense to anyone that has come up with the idea, cause most of us have. But maybe the Lumenlab plans should have a "don't waste your time or our time disclaimer."

I only mention this because it seems that nobody does a search on this idea before posting something about it.

I'm sure the day is coming that will make this possible. I just think more reading would keep the dead horse from getting whipped some more. Lets just let him rest in peace for know. rolleyes.gif

The "dead horse" you talk about is alive and well in the link in post #9. Check it out and see for yourself.

That is impressive, but what is the cost? I didn't see that listed. How adaptable is it. What I saw was some pictures without a lot of explanation... I could show you a pic of me pulling a mini mag light out of a box and then show you a some pics of some good screen shots and the next thing you know.... Alot of people are asking how that guy got such good results with a mini mag.

Just being the skeptic here... This IS sorta the holy grail of diy projection.
SupraGuy
Well, I do believe that it's done with LEDs, but what I'd like to see from it is a blank white screen. Does that projection look blotchy and uneven to anyone else?

Skeptism is a good thing. It proves things out. Communicating with him is hard as he is Chinese. More information is definetly needed. As far as I'm concerned these results are all preliminary until more info is posted. Price of leds and the quality of them will play an important role. There appears to be an uneven lighting issue. Obviously this system needs some work yet. 6 months ago people were saying it would be 5 years before we would see this. We'll see how it all works out.
