Because the room where my first projector will be located is small, it tends to get sweatily hot with two computers running. Even more so in the summer months. So, to enable me to direct the heated air being vented from the projector, I'm gonna make an external fan box with the projector connected to it by a length of 1" diameter hose. That way I can direct the air out of a convenient window. smile.gif

I was toying with the idea of keeping the fan inside the projector, but having an attachment for the hose.

1" diameter is really going to cut down on the cooling capabilities of your fan. That hose diameter will create low volumes of air at high velocity, you need to use ducting that is about the same diameter as the fan to realize it's maximum potential. Also, the exhaust ducting much match also, or else pressure will build in the external box and slow the fan, possibly reducing it's life.

Sorry to attack, the concept is functional, I just don't want you to end up in an overheat situation or burn up your fan.

I have to agree with jammor. You probably want something more like the hose for a dryer vent. That's easy to get hold of and is very cheap. Also, I think you want a fan right next to the projector box, either inside or just outside. The reason has to do with the hose reducing your air flow. If you put the fan in the middle of the hose, you have the air flow reduction before the fan and after the fan which will cut down on the overall efficiency.

So, from a DIY perspective, use steps. Start with the fan in the projector box and attach the dryer hose from the fan to the window and do a couple hour heat test. If this doesn't work, you could try adding a fan in the middle of the hose which will act as a kind of booster.

On the plus side, I've seen this used on commercial projectors both for heat dissapation and for noise reduction. So, you're thinking right. wink.gif
