Hey all.

I'd like to make a small cheap and simple PJ for my gf who is living in cramped student quarters. She and her friends have the occaisonal movie night where they all gather 'round her 17" LCD and watch. What I'd like to put together will obviously have a drastically lower image quality, but should be easier for a group of people to watch.

What I'm thinking is a 1.8" - 2.5" LCD mounted in a slide projector, driven by a cheapie portable DVD player. She can plug her computer speakers to the DVD player's audio out to play the sound.

I've seen a few of these quick & dirty PJ's here, on DIYProjector, and DIYAudio, but there's basically one thing I don't get:

Isn't the LCD bigger than a typical slide? Are there modifications required to expose the whole LCD to the lens' field of view?

Is there a specific format or size of slide PJ I should be looking for, or can any 35mm unit be made to work?

diyaudio has a 35 page thread on this very subject. The results were OK for what it's worth and should meet the purpose of your GF's occasional movie night. Plus the parts needed can be had for about $45 or less from ebay.

I hunted around on there for a bit before posting, but couldn't find the definitive thread. Can you please post or PM me a link?

BTW - does the name "e1miran" mean that you're from Elmira? If so, is it Elmira ON, or Elmira NY? smile.gif

Ive actually built a hipscreen slide projector.. and its aweful.. very dim and bad screen door..

I wouldnt recommend building one.. its very dissapointing..

I have mine sitting on a shelf collecting dust, and i also have a few 2" hipscreens also collecting dust..

the 2" LCD's resolution is just not enough to put out a decent projection. Although it is an easy build..

the hipscreen fits nicely in a 2" slide projector once stripped. Slide projectors use expensive bulbs with VERY short life spans.. (40-60hours)

I understand that the quality will be really poor, I just want something quick, cheap, and fun as a novelty mostly.

Does anyone have any leads on where I can score a cheap slide projector in Toronto? I tried Active Surplus, to no avail. I'm thinking Goodwill or Salvation Army next.

I know you can find 'em on eBay, but I don't like the idea of paying $30 to ship a $10 slide projector. tongue.gif

Syscrush,

If you need a 2.5" screen, I just won a Hip Screen on ebay. I had thought I'd try the slide projector project just to get my feet wet. So I bid on it. But now I'm not sure if I want to take the time just for a "throw away" project. I had hoped to get outbid, but no luck (I'm always outbid at the last second any other time - go figure).

So, if you need it, PM me and I'll let you know the price.

If you want chaep and novelty then snag a projection panel and OHP off ebay. This is cheaper and more effective comapered to the hip gear slide projector. This is what i did in college and it worked great!
