I have a question for purchased projectors.. DLP vs LCD…

I know this is a DIY form. Please don’t spam me. (im still making one)

I have a new DLP projector. Lasted all of about 15 hours before the colours went funny… GREAAATTT.
Manu factor is going to replace it of course.
But this makes me concerned how bad it went so quickly.

What are the cons of an LCD vs a DLP??? We have an old Epson LCD at work (purchased it 2nd hand 3 years ago) and it is still showing fantastic pics.

Most manufactures sell DLP projectors. Main sellers of LCD are NEC, EPSON. Why is that? Is DLP better?

Please explain to me. I have been researching this for months and everyone recons there stuff is better. I need to know from the pros.


P.S. Who’s great idea was it to set the minimum length for searches to 4… Cant search DLP, LCD, etc..

i think normal usable 3-chip DLP projector costs about 15k$ and above...
So

1.) DIY-LCD-projector have best perfomance for minimal $
2.) DIY-LCD-projector repair also does not cost a much (except LCD repair)

Hmmm, basic stuff I learned from those articles....
If you plan to run 24/7 use a dlp, an LCD will over heat and wear out over time.

Pros for DLP.
no screen door.
smaller.
contrast ratio.

cons for DLP.
rainbow effect
stray light around screen caused by light reflecting off the edges of the tiny mirrors.
less efficient with light? some say not at bright, some say brighter.

Pros for LCD.
no rainbow effect.
softter focus helps blend pixels together.
cheaper to repair (single parts vs entire light engine)

Cons for LCD.
screen door.
lower contrast ratio

Cons for both.
Cost of a new bulb.

Sorry if i just repeated stuff you already knew... The only way to tell for sure is to compare side by side.
Go to your local home audio/video store, check out the projectors in action.
I've never seen the rainbow effect so it wouldn't bother me.

Everytime i see something like that, it makes me want to save up.... until i remember the cost of bulbs is insane.

I was more conserned with "when things go wrong"...

These are some pics after 25 hours of use from a brand new DLP prjector....
35 hours on the clock now and it is basicaly unwatchable.

Yes is getting fixed under warrenty but scared me how quick it can get stuffed.
Dont think i would have the same dramitic problems with LCD.

Notice that green and yellow weird. Hmmm
The longer the projector is on at a time, this gets worce. (I have tried blowing a fan onto it.. nothing)

Another common problem with LCD projectors is 'vertical banding' where sections of the screen have slightly different brightness levels. I haven't seen any comparisons done on the reliablility of either technology. Google time...

The main reliability of concern of LCDs seems to be color shift. I wonder how this applies to our DIY PJs? I haven't seen anyone reporting color shift due to age. Another major advantage? Time will tell.

Wow I will stay with my LCD PJ and never buy a DLP ..Good luck with that..

It just keeps getting better.

Now i have white and green.. blue too but only for about 3 mins then it disapears.

Getting it replaced next week. I think ill give it another go. If i have any problems again ill replace and sell ASAP.

Current thought onthese technologies is that DLP is the industry standard for quality image, CR, and color reproduction. Companies such as panasonic are pushing the limits of LCD pj's with the ae700 having a 5500:1 CR, but all of the company's high end pj's are still DLP. Both DLP and LCD have the potential for problems, that are about the same in frequency according to consumer reports.

The search is limited to >3 letters because less than that causes a substantial amount of load on the server which slows everything down for everyone. The forum is a big database to sort through for a web server.

I personally can't stand DLPs. No matter the speed of the color wheel(s), they make me feel sick.

I had the same problem when watching on my brother's DLP, also I the rainbow effect really distracted me. At the time I thought it had something to do with the input from the VHS but later after reading I discovered that it was inherit with most all DLP technology, but at the same time there are people that don't even notice it.
