Full Version: POLL: your Screen Center Height, what is it?

I am hoping to find a common average here, not everyone will project screens from the floor to the ceiling. When you project your screens, those of you who have 8' walls, where does the center of the screen sit in relation to the height of the wall?

48"
55"
60"
65"

Where?

The reason I am asking is because, well... I am actually contemplating going ahead with this design. I know I can tilt the triplet a few degrees along with the mirror, fresnel and possibly even the panel, but I would prefer that a 90 degree triplet be bang on center of the screen. So therefor I ask you more experienced builders/users where does the center of your screen sit in relation to the projection wall? What height from the floor?

Please include whether you sit on a regular couch or chair, or are you on the floor, a bed, something that requires a different height?

My screen size is 72" (58 x 43). The center of my screen is 55" from the ceiling.

rlwoodjr,

Thanks, I don't have the priviledge of having experience with a projector to know what is the most comfortable viewing postions. Anybody else want to share how they use their projector? Screensize and hieght on the wall? I'm looking to find the most common screen center height when viewing from a couch.

EDIT: Just re-reading your post again, for me to have the same width screen the center of my screen will be 16" higher than yours with the projector design above.... mind you I just realized that I have an aspect ratio of 16:10, not 4:3(16:12) maybe that will bring my setup closer to yours.... (the center that is). But see its all relative to viewing distance and screen size... I have to build it and then look back to see what I did wrong if I don't like it. It's teh only way.

You know what? I guess I am being dense, I'm just watching tv thinking about it, it doesn't matter... the only way I will know what I want is to have a projector, which means I have to build it first.... Screen size etc.. that's all affected by how close you are. No matter what I ask others here it won't help. But thanks.

Lucky, I recall reading somewhere that a good design is to have your eyes level with 1/3 distance up the screen from the bottom. Get a tape measure and plant yourself in your favourite seating position and measure how far your eyes are from the floor. The rest is a bit of basic math.

My initial design:

Eyes: ~900 from floor (comfy recliner)
4:3 screen ~1530x1150
Screen bottom 520 from floor
(~75" diagonal)

Geat reply, thanks buddy! I am going to do that. BTW, I like that res. I'm going on the hunt for your log, I wanna see what monitor you used.

EDIT: I guess the 1530x1150 is the mm dimension of the LCD. smile.gif Anyways, GREAT PLOG!!! I really like your PJ.

Thanks, the PJ is more of a testbed than anything else. I'm determined to get the PJ floor mounted, but out of the field of vision. I might hang on for a bit and see if I can get a pro lens as the standard LL triplet is really pushed with a 17" and lens-shift

The dimensions I gave are in mm and are of the projection screen, sorry, I should have made it clearer.

Lucky,

When you sit in your viewing location, looking straight ahead you should be looking about 1/3 up your screen. I've had mine higher, and moved it down cause it was uncomfortable to view. Kinna like sitting in the front rows at the theatres. Wow, been a LONG time since I've been to one of those, heh.

That may be the normal "optimum viewing angle" but mine is a bit higher. I'd say that my eye level is about even with the botom of the screen.

however, since I'm in a reclining chair, when my head is on the headrest, I'm looking right at the middle of the screen. smile.gif Actually, a bit above if the chair is all the way back, and my feet are up. smile.gif

hehe.. I guess it all depends on how you like to "lounge" or sit. I think FLY CRJ and the other poster are probably bang on the money with that rule of thumb for most people. There's always exceptions to the rule, but it makes sense to me. Someone should add that to the Wiki.

Thanks guys.

Yes, when in the recliner you will need to see over your feet smile.gif . When I am comfortable, the eye is about 5" higher than the bottom of the screen. Works out great!
