Full Version: Gamma correction without a HTPC

This is a thread to share any info regarding a cheap hardware solution for gamma correction.

I am exploring the possibility of gamma adjusting a 480P image before it goes into the projector. Since HTPCs are expensive (even more so with a component input card), I would like to find a hardware solution for gamma correction.

So far, the only cheap product I have possibly found is the KWORLD TV1531R. Here is how it might be used:
First, convert a 480P component signal to VGA using a transcoder. Then, feed the VGA signal from the transcoder into the Kworld TV1531R VGA input, adjust the gamma, and output that to the projector.

I don't know if this will work because:
1. Every website except Kworld's lists gamma adjustment as one of the features of this product.
2. The VGA input of the Kworld box may be just passive, or it may be adjustable.
3. If it is adjustable, does the Kworld box degrade the quality of the signal?

I e-mailed Kworld, but still haven't got a response.

Another option I thought would be to replace the output op-amps of a transcoder with non-linear amplifier circuits. After reading up on the subject, I found this produces unacceptable distortion.

Any other ideas? Does anybody know of other cheap products that do this?

I just got an e-mail back from Kworld. The TV Box is capable of adjusting gamma. However, the VGA in is passive only - you can't adjust anything on a VGA in.
