Ok guys here we go...

I finally got enough courage to strip the LCD so I can get measurements for the enclosure.

I'm also moving in a few weeks so I figured that I get this part done as soon as possible. Unfortunately, I can't build the case myself cuz of lack of space and lack of tools, but Tescorp has stepped up and will build it for me. Thanks Tescorp.

Ok so here we go...

Here it is, waiting for me to gut it.

There are 4 screws that hold this cover together as well as tabs all around the sides and top.

Need to also remove the stand.

removing the cover was painful for me, since I didn't want to put a scratch on it. but luckily there were no "incidents" It did take me longer than I expected. About 3 hours to strip it completely down.

Finally, with the cover off, I began to regord screw locations and wire locations.

With the boards removed. Now is when I realized what I was doing. Funny enough it is also the same time that my wife realized what I was doing...

A long conversation followed... ph34r.gif

Need to remove cables first. Got to keep reminding myself...

I almost dropped the whole thing because of this...

Next was to remove the aluminum backing of the LCD housing.

There were 4 little screws holding this aluminum cover for the LCD board. Once those were removed, I was able to remove the main aluminum cover to the whole thing.

White paper like material, there were 3 different type of these sheets. followed by a glass that looked like a fresnel lens. Maybe it was there to enhance the backlight.

Removed the backlight rails which also housed the backlights themselves.

I was surprised to see this, i thought they ran across the screen, not just ont he sides.

The pile gets bigger and bigger... I'm getting myself even more scared that I will not be able to put this back together until the enclosure arrives...

This is a pic of the backside fo the LCD, I had no clue it was supposed to have a aluminum\mirror like finish. I thought it was going to look like the front...

my lcd had the same thing.. though i think mine was acrylic plus it was textured.. i think its there so evenly distribute the light from the backlights across the screen so that the lighting is uniform.

here's mine

Cool, that would make sense... I was surprised to see that it was made out of glass.

So there I was last night doing all this so I can measure and then I realized that I didn't have anything to measure with...

So on my way home tonight I'll have to go buy some sort of a measuring device to get the correct dimensions... Bummer

Any update? Does there seem to be any FFC problems with this thing?

Thanks!

No FFC issues with this at all. This strip went completely without any problems.

My only concern would be finding fresnels that will work with this screen with out having fuzzy or dark corners, since it is WS.

But I haven't done all the research required as of yet, kinda went into it blindly... unsure.gif

I'm pretty sure I or someone here will come up with a solution... ph34r.gif

Could you please post the size of the LCD itself, stripped?

Would it fit these lenses? The 330mm/220mm have been used by a few people with the standard LL triplet with success.
ricoks
no, you'll need the larger size of the pro lenses!

I can wait for the pro lenses, but will the fresnels offered here work with this setup?

Or will I have to get larger ones?

That genesis GM5321 is a nice chipset.

If you have access to a cheap component hd15 breakout cable try sending it a 480p/720p signal on the vga port and see if it doesnt decode it. the chipset supports it, no telling what westinghouse engineers set up though tongue.gif

I just took measurements of the LCD itself out of the aluminum bracket and it measures 15" across and the height is 9 1/4".

With the aluminum bracket it measures 16" across and the height is 10 1/4".

Can you post a picture of the LCD with the electrical boards and how they hook up? This is a great find. I was looking at this model for my next projector.

Since the DIYProjectorCo fresnels are 15.5"*15.5", I don't see why they wouldn't work with this, except the obvious short throw. If I get this LCD, I'll probably use those fresnels.

I just finished putting this back together until I get all the required parts. But I'll see if I have any addtional pictures that will help you.

What exactly do you need to see? I thought a I posted a pic with what you're asking?

I'm waiting on an answer from Westinghouse on the HDCP issue, then we'll see...

I have a stupid questions that I just thought of...

If the projector is closer to the wall, will it look brighter? or just about the same?

The reason I ask, is that the projector is going to be atleast 5 to 6 feet away (most likely less) from the wall. What can I expect from this setup?

How close to the wall are most projectors here? From what I've seen, they average about 7 to 8 feet.

basically yes. think of your PJ as having a fix total light output. if this light is spread over a smaller area (i.e. smaller projected image), then it will be brighter.

the actual distance from screen to PJ varies widely. it depends on LCD size, fresnels, triplet and the projected image size you are looking for... if you haven't yet, you should try the LL calculator (version I or II) to get a better idea of the distance, version II takes into account fresnel magification, so should get you closer to an actual result.

Thanks for answer. I appreciate it!! biggrin.gif

Also someone asked me if this panel does 1280 X 720 res. It does... biggrin.gif

Just looked at the price for the new Pro Lens... Wow!!! ohmy.gif $200!!! Plus another $50 for the larger fresnels...

This little project of mine is getting expensive... ph34r.gif

Good, the 720p works!

Question: is that circuit board at the bottom or top of the LCD? It'd help if it was at the bottom when upside down! biggrin.gif Also, how easily will the other boards hook up inside the projector?

Thanks!

The board is at the bottom of the screen, so when upside down, it will be on the top...

Should be fairly easy to connect the boards though. It is just a few strands of cable that come off the boards to the LCD.

I have a pic posted on page 1 that shows both the power board and the LCD board. There is also another pic that shows the cables that would need to be connected.

Is that going to work? How will the board hold up? Will you be able to make a frame for this?

I think it should work. The framing will problably make it easier to postion the cable.
davejcb
Hard to tell from the pictures, but how much can that board rotate? How do you figure you will make it hold up?
