In researching the forum on lexan, I noticed much discussion on UV filters. I don't recall the guide saying anything about UV filters and the search engine rejects any terms smaller than 4 characters.

So, does one need UV filtering? If so, why?

Yes you need UV protection for the LCD. Most people use Lexan XL10 which you can get at Home Depot or Lowes and it is inexpensive.

Hey,
I got a question. Where exactly do you place the uv filter? and what do you attatch it with? So, there are the 2 fresnels, the lcd, the tempered glass, AND the uv filter? thanks in advance for the help!!!! -Derek
P.S.-If someone could send an answer to my profile in Lumenlab so that I know when someone answers these questions that would be GREAT!!! Thanks!!!

I have the UV filter sold in the LL store. It was originally intended to be attatched to tempered glass, but it's currently attatched to a piece of regular Lexan (Not XL10) which is in use as a heat shield.

XL10 is nice, because it handles both elements in one piece, thereby reducing hte number pf layers, and the light loss inherent with more layers.

In my projector the UV filter is sandwiched inbetween the tempered glass and the first fresnel, all three are touching each other. I understand the UV filter protects the color in the LCD. We've enjoyed hundreds of hours since last spring with the pj without any issues with this setup. Good luck on your build- take your time with it, you won't be sorry with good results!!

I don't have a UV filter and see no issues. However, others feels that one is needed for long term stability of the lcd color filters. Depends on your tolerance to risk.

Another issue to take into account is the type of lamp you use. The lamp sold at LL puts out a lot of UV and thus should have a UV filter. Other MH lamps do not put out as much, and thus a UV filter may not be required or as vital for them. I am using the Venture lamp and do not feel it is vital for my setup. Then again, as I said, it is all a matter of risk tolerance.

The same type of lamp (Venture lamp) is used unfiltered in typical stores and bays, so I do not see a human hazard to UV from it. I am not sure about the lamp sold at LL.

Supposing things this way might lead to harm, besides lexan is quite cheap (its cheaper than a piece of tempered glass).

I dont like to gamble with probabilities, thats why Im using a lexan.

XL10 is much more expensive than regular Lexan, but I think it's worthwhile.

Considering the UV filtering is MUCH cheaper than a replacement panel, having the additional filtering is worthwhile.

I found that the UV filter from the LL store works well for me. And for what it's worth, the filter + regular Lexan is cheaper than the XL10, though there may be a slight hit in brightness. If you're ordering the lens kit from LL anyway, adding in the filter is most reasonably priced.
