I was reviewing the options for my westinghouse LCD 15" (CMV) and I saw that I can move the image of a letterbox movie to the top. (technically the bottom of the lcd since it's upside down)
this allowed me to reduces the angle of the projector about 5 degrees, and the image was a clean clear rectangle.
What's cool about it,is that it's actually moving the image up through the existing pixels of the lcd without changing the shape.
neat feature.

If I understand you correctly Zoomplayer Pro will also do this.

You can also offset the lcd.

I'm not using a HTPC.
This is strictly to move the image up about an inch so the black bars are no longer even.
I used the controls on the LCD itself.
most lcd's have it. mine gave me an inch, which turned into about a foot on the screen.

Zoomplayer pro also does this. It allows you to move the image all the way to the top or to the bottom of the screen. It works great if you place your pj on the floor in front of your seat.

Center of the projection is the brightest though >.<

I'm NOT USING A HTPC. Zoomplayer isn't going to help.
the center of my projector is no brighter than the rest. So it's a moot point, interesting but moot.
Reducing the angle of the projector reduces the keystone necessary and the 1 foot shift keeps my letterbox movies looking good and at the right position.
4x3 isn't happening.
