comp_atkins,

You're a bastard (very often an Australian term of endearment as in this instance). You are responsible for me wasting three valuable bloody hours of my time reading your plog. (and writing this reply) It has to be one of the first times that I returned to the original stream after going off on so many other tangents and finally ending on the same thread that I started off with; a feat not usually achievable in today's technological arena. To have kept my interest in a single stream, as such, is not commonplace. (Take that as a flattering remark Mr. comp_atkins .)

Congratulations for that alone, but I have just had my interest rekindled in the process of building my own PJ by the initial success of your original design and the subsequent fine-tuning of that original concept into a very successful example.

Your determination and your ability to ask and accept advice on ways and means to improve your output (personal PJ project) is inspiring and the end result is the source of my own admiration and jealousness at your success. You built something different and accepted advice to improve and solve initial niggling anomalistic problems to achieve a very successful outcome for that initial design. That is also applicable to the likes of Aussie “Bazza Bushie” (one of the many original crusaders) (and a bloody Australian) including all the other posts of assistance on this Forum.

You sir are responsible for me embarking on a quest to build an equivelant machine, which will cost me many times what I could buy a commercial product for (That has been my own lifetime experience). As you and other home builders are able to say “I built it myself.” I will also be able to say, “Mate, so did I.”

Let’s not talk about the cost because I had a lot of enjoyment in creating a product that does not charge AUD$600 – AUD$900 for a replacement bulb. Can someone explain why we have to pay so much for replacement bulbs for such a simple concept of pushing light through an LCD panel onto a screen for simple entertainment?????? I don’t want to hear the profit margin theory again, so why can’t I find a cheap replacement bulb for my projector….. Lumenlabs did…. The generic model they sell has a replacement cost of the bulb of USD $60………… How??????. Multinational #$*&% profits.. conspiritory theories.. ?????

Back to reality……. Thanks for the Forum, Lumenlabs, and thanks comp_atkins for your thread. ...and put me down for a test drive of the ?? version of the new (commercial) projector.

comp_atkins,

I have also spent the last 2-3 hours reading this entire thing. I've been wanting to build a projector for a long time and I think I'm finally going to do it, with your design.
abehost
Ok,
I've done some more looking around and thought for sometime that I should go the 15" route. Now I'm back thinking I should go with the 17".

I worry that I won't be able to get the 17" working with the standard triplet.

Is the LL65K T15 Lamp okay for this design? Will it work with the venture V90D7612K pulse start ballast ?

i think i did read somewhere that the LL T15 bulb is compatible with the venture ps ballast since it is a ps bulb. i've not tried it myself but if you search around the help section of the forums, i think this topic has been brought up before smile.gif

I read somewhere that a standard component to VGA cable will not work with the Hyundai L72S.
1) Is there a non-standard cable out there that will do the job? Or will I have to use an expensive 200$ transcoder?
2) Does anyone know if the Samsung 730B will support a component to VGA cable?

a component to VGA cable will not work with the L72S because the monitor does not support sync-on-green. as far as i know, you'll need a transcoder to get component video displayed on the monitor. i picked up my vdigi vdz3 on ebay for ~ $100 and it works as promised. if you're wondering about the samsung, check the specifications to see if it supports sync-on-green. if it does i think it ought to work with a component to vga cable.

comp_atkins,

What problems would arise if you were to put a pro lense in your box right now? Not changing anything else.

i think i'd have issues with the condensor fresnel's focal length being far to short to use with the pro triplet. i believe u need a longer fl fresnel to deal with the throw of the triplet..

Yes, its first on the list right now.

I'm still having a hard time deciding between the pro lense or standard lense.

I've discussed these problems here:

http://www.lumenlab.com/forums/index.php?s...=12776&st=0

What lense do you think I should go for given the dimensions of the room I plan to put it in?
Fulcrum
Comp_atkins,

Have you thought about moving it to the otherside of the wall and poking the lens through? I just saw this in Cold Steel's Plog yesterday. Go to post #53. If you want to hide the lens, then put a framed picture over it until your ready to use it.

There are many advantages:
1) Keeps clutter out of the family room (wives like that)
2) You won't ever have to move it to vacuum.
2) Makes it more difficult for the kids to damage the pj
3) You won't hear those noisy fans
4) YOUR PICTURE GETS BIGGER! (That should be enough of a reason to do this)
5) If you hook it up to the computer behind the wall, you can use a
wireless keyboard and surf the internet as a family.

And with the extra distance I believe you could use the pro lens. The pro lens has a larger diameter, so it gathers more light, and your image will be brighter, and the bigger triplets such as the pro or Buhl have better focused corners.

I went with an Buhl lens. The Buhls are periodically offered on ebay. I picked mine up for $80. Just as good as the pro, but cheaper. Check out Arizona's Forum Topic "The Brightest Triplet", where many different triplets are compared.

I hope this helps...

Cheers!

Fulcrum,

Unfortunatly, with my setup ( and my place being rented ) I could not cut into the wall to create a pocket to put the pj in. On top of that, I'm also in the process of moving and will have a room in my new apartment functioning as an office / movie room which I'll need to get set up. Its smaller than the bedroom which I currently have my projector in so if I went with the pro lense, my image may end up too small ( not sure how small ). On the plus side, since the throw in the new room is going to be a few feet less, I should pick up some overall brightness as the image will not be spread out over such a wide area.
I'm also in the market for a pull down screen to project on as my new place will not have a nice big open wall to project onto.

Comp_atkins

I have a projector set up with the 730b. With the standard lens the picture is VERY big. For wide screen its just a little big but when using full screen it goes onto the ceiling and floor. I know your first question will be what are my dimensions. I'll measure the tonight and get back to you.
comp_atkins
yup smile.gif my setup is the same way.. the screen ends up HUGE if you move the projector more than ~ 8 feet from the screen. my setup is basically floor to ceiling ( 8ft ceilings ) when projected full screen. i'm in the process of moving right now ( such a pita ) and my new room will be a little smaller so hopefully it'll be a little easier on the eyes @ full screen. i'll make sure to get lots of pics
comp_atkins
well, i've finally moved and got the pj set up in the new place. wow moving is a pita, especially with a huge mdf box full of heavy stuff and valuable electronics smile.gif so the pj is set up on its trust shelf once again in my office / movie / video game room and some test shots were done last night. the new room is smaller but i was quite surprised by how much my image shrunk on the wall. i'll get some pics up soon. i'm also in the market now for a nice pull down screen so if anyone has some suggestions i'm all ears
comp_atkins
as promised.. pics of the new watchin' room smile.gif

basically the pj is set up on the shelf again, this time above my computer desk instead of the bed...

only have 2 seats right now for watching.. but 9 times out of 10 it'll only be 2 ppl anyway.. please excuse the mess.. i'm still unpacking smile.gif

here's basically the view from the seat.. no screen yet because i need to get a new pull down i can mount above the closet doors and roll up when not in use..

screenshots to follow. stay tuned.

woo hoo! my pj's now offically 1 year old! its been a bumpy year full of ups and downs and many changes along the way ( not so many in recent months though ) and i'm happy to say she is still up and running as well as the first day i flipped the power switch and was amazed biggrin.gif

still working on getting a new screen though as i've been sidetracked with other projects and car repairs and vacations. hopefully this month that task will be completed as well. stay tuned!

Can I celebrate your anniversary with a question? Another question, I mean. Heh.
I have the same kind of ballast you used (cap and coil), and I'm wondering how to mount it. I couldn't really see how you did it in your plog. Help a guy out?
Thanks dude!
pr33st
Also, where did you find the L-shaped wood strips you used to frame your fresnels? I've been by both Michael's and Home Depot, and each said to go to the other. Help!
brainlock
it's known as 'outside corner' trim... it's usually with the molding and banister/railing stuff... they have it at menards and lowes...
Fulcrum
So in celebration, what presents (upgades) did you give your PJ?

unfortunatly, when i ordered my ballast, the woman said they did not have the mounting brackets. so currently the ballast is held in place simply by gravity... so no tilting the pj around for me tongue.gif

you can see it just sitting there happily under the flashing in the lower right.

update, i did get a screen, but since i just moved into said new townhouse, the pj and fancy screen are both sitting on the floor again until i get around to mounting them again.. hopefully in a week or two i'll get em both up and running and have some new pics of the screen..

basically what i did was take the metal and plastic frames which supported the ldc panel from the monitor and built the wooden frame around the ones from the monitor itself. the wooden frame was built using edge trim i picked up at home depot i beleive.

here's one of the frames as i was gluing it together.

the plastic frame from the panel fits pretty snuggly inside that i dont think i had to glue the plastic to the wood in order for it to stay in.

put together a few before / after shots using the ikea and the norpro for comparison purposes. i made sure to use the same camera settings for both photots and tried to take pics from same location for each shot. ikea is on the right, norpro is on the left. really cant tell much difference in pics, but like all screenshots, look much better in person smile.gif

that diypro testcard everyone has..

now just a plain white image

i want to get a few movie frames for comparison too. problem is i dont have the camera settings written down for 95% of my screenshots so i'd just be guessing that the comparisons are apples to apples.

If you load it into some software all your digital images should have EXIF tags which will show you the settings used to take the previous shot. I use Linux and most of the image viewers there show this information as image properties
