Full Version: High definition routing question

A friend of mine just bought a nice Sony HD tv. He's got it routed through his Tivo. I thought it looked nice, but didn't have the heart to tell him it still looked like standard-def to me. Maybe somebody can confirm my suspicions.

Here's how he's got it set up:

Cable box ---> Tivo (via coax cable) ---> TV

Can a normal Tivo pass-through an HD signal on coax? It displays okay, but it can't record it.

Here's what I would have done:
Cable box ---------> Tivo --------> TV (line 1, coax/composite/s-video)
Cable box---------> TV (line 2, component)

Any thoughts? I'm confused that the HD channels display at all after going through the Tivo.

No. HD is not passed on coax.

You're correct in what you suggest. He could record standard TV signals on the Tivo, and use the component outputs of the cable box to watch HD programming on the TV. He won't ever be able to record HD unless it is an HD Tivo... i'm not sure they make them, but I know that they have an DirecTV HD DVR (using Tivo service) for satellite customers.

If he really wants to be impressed, give satellite TV a try, DirecTV or Dish. (JMHO)

That's what I thought. But I wonder if the cable box is downcoverting the HD signal on coax? How else would those channels even display after being passed through the Tivo?

Actually, they do make HD Tivos. They're still around $1000. This blows my mind since many satellite and cable providers will give you a DVR that does the same thing for practically nothing.

Well DishNetwork won't give you a HD DVR for practically nothing. They'll give you a Regular DVR for next to nothing but not a HD DVR.

The 2 models they have are only offered through a retailer for $600-900

Yup. Down converts to 480i. It's pretty simple, if you're using coax, composite or s-video, you are dealing with a 480i signal. If you're really passing HD signals (480p, 720p, 1080i) then you will be dealing with component, DVI or HDMI connections.

yea, i hear you on the HD PRV's. The DirecTV one was $1000 when it first came out, but I saw it a CCity for about $500... another year or two and hopefully they'll be giving them away too !! *wishful thinking* of course next year should be a better year for HD on satellite as the new satellites should be coming on-line, which means more (and better) choices.

Dish Network is now offering their 922 dual tuner HD DVR for a $250 upgrade fee. Now bear in mind this is a lease receiver, so if you ever cancel you have to give it back....but its a cheaper alternative then shelling out the money to buy a new one.

whoops, yea the dual tuner is 942, not 922..heh

anyway, i work for Frontier/Citizens Communications, we are partnered with Dish Network, and we sell these all day long. Usually its for new customers, but depending on how long you've been with Dish they may allow you to upgrade.

Give them a call if you are interested...its not advertised on their site
