Im looking opretty hard for some lcd's 17", and i was curious, where do most ppl here get them from? does it matter if the glass on front is cracked? (im guessing it does) i only ask cuz the backlight could be out and thats just fine.

ps. my friend is selling a monitor witha dead backlight for $40, logic pv 1710?

if its just a dead backlight, then it can be used. Just make sure nothing else is messed up.

Check for it on the compatible monitors list. Otherwise you run the risk of having ffc problems. But if that risk is worth $40 to you and the specs on the monitor are decent, I would say go for it.
