Full Version: Behr Silverscreen Paint vs Blackout Cloth?

I have seen soooooo many conflicting opinions on different paints and etc but havent seen any large scale results.

I am trying to decide between buying blackout cloth, buying a 120" screen from newegg for $109 or building a screen and painting it with Behr Silverscreen paint.

I am going to use this screen with some abient lighting mostly so keep that in mind....

From what I read the silverscreen paint works well and doesnt have problems with hot spotting. But I read conflicting opinions on that and the colors / contrast.

Blackout cloth sounds good but I will need to build a frame and etc which will not make it portable or etc...where as the screen I am looking at can be rolled up in to its container.

Here is the screen BTW:

really it would work out to 105" diagonal so I may go with the next size up...

Would this screen produce similar results to blackout cloth?

Anyone go through this and have screen shots?

My first screen was a white wall. It looked ok, but the contrast wasn't great.

I next painted that wall with silver screen. It made a huge difference with color quality and contrast.

I'm now using a slightly off-white BO cloth. It's working ok (better than the white wall), but I'll probably paint it with the silver screen, once I get my reflector installed.

Interesting. I'm using flat white on my wall, and overall, I'm very happy with it. If "silver screen" can imrpove colour and contrast, then I guess I'll give that a try.

What was the brand name of the silver screen paint you used and where did you buy it.

Thanks.

It's called Behr "Silverscreen" and it's available at Home Depot. It's part of Behr's line of home paints. Contrary to popular belief, the paint has NO silver content at all; it is not a high gain SILVER SCREEN solution ...

Sorry if this was not a confusion for you, it was for me when I first started investigating DIY screen treatments. smile.gif

Be sure to use a reflective Base Coat such as a Gloss white under the SS. I would suppose that SS would darken your luminosity to a considerable extent, but as stated herein, it does provide a richer color pallet, and deeper blacks. Some love it, a few detest what it does to Skin hues and White levels.

Do a "Large" sample first on a board. "Large" means 3' x 3' minimum. Smaller samples are not covered with enough of a projected image to give you proper indication of performance.
