Hi!

Thinking of going to a 17" to display HDTV content, and I'm wondering if there is such a thing as a 17" with 720p as a native resolution, other than an LCD TV? I was thinking of going with the Samsung 712N, just looked at the manual and 1280*720 isn't listed as a native resolution.

Reason I ask is that I would like to feed component output converted to VGA from an HDTV STB into the LCD directly, assuming it can handle a 720p signal.

Any monitors that would fit the bill?

Thanks!

Did more searching, found this monitor, the Viewsonic VP171b.

Would this monitor display the 720p from my STB with black bars at the bottom, or scale it to fit 1280*1024 in a 4:3 ratio?

Most 17" monitors are 1280 x 1024 at 720p

I don't understand what you mean...

Saying 1280 x 1024 resolution is essentially the same thing as saying that the monitor is capable of 720p. Most 17" monitors have this resolution. So you would be able to run 720p with any 1280 x 1024 monitor. Of course current PC LCD's do not have HDCP, which will soon pose a problem for HDTV.

What would happen if I were to plug a STB that outputs 720p (1280*720) to a 17" LCD (assuming there's no HDCP)? Black bars at the bottom?

Would plugging the STB via component->VGA into the 17" work, then? Component doesn't have HDCP, right?

Just went through this thread, which pretty much talks about what I'm wondering about, only about the Hyundai L72S.

If I understand correctly, the LCD may or may not accept a 720p signal from a device such as an Xbox or a STB HDTV receiver, but it should work going through the PC using Powerstrip, which would enable us to force 1280*720, or simply display 720p with black lines at 1280*1024.

Am I way off here? If not, I'm still trying to know which 4:3 17" monitors will accept the 720p signal. We know the Hyundai L72S doesn't, I'm wondering specifically if the Samsung 712N and Dell 1702FP do.

Thanks!

Nobody's trying to plug their Xbox directly into the LCD @ 720p? Or an HDTV receiver? Or even with a Vdigi, same question, will a 4:3 monitor accept 720p?
