Anyone seen this? http://www.lightblueoptics.com/

here's one interesting quote from their site:

"Unlike a conventional video projector, heavy, bulky lenses are not required: diffraction does all the work for you, and the projected image is sharp and in focus at any distance."

They are talking about building this tech into cell phones or into iPod-type devices that would be portable and store the movies on themselves!

totally wierd. I wonder if that uses a pinhole instead of a lens.

But how could they possibly make a light source to power a projector, fit in a cell phone?

Hmmm, that's the first I've seen of that type of tech. Personally I think vertical cavity surface emitting lasers and microelectromechanical mirrors would be much more efficient. It would help to take advantage of human persistence of vision. I think it would be a long way down the road as I've yet to see large form factor OLED screens and full color retinal displays that haven't met their projected dates. Still very interesting though.

The site says that the expected introduction of their products would be 2-4 years. I wonder how much the commercial version will cost?
