Great work in the lighting thread Eyebath. smile.gif
Eyebath
Cheers Meeper. smile.gif

Oh btw meant to ask you, I've just ordered a norpro, are you in for one? I thought if 3 or 4 of us order from the UK, Lamps sticks them all in the same box, it will save on shipping. Lemme know cool.gif
Meeper
Yup, I'm up for one. smile.gif

Lemme know when the order is going in, so I don't forget to order it. blink.gif
Eyebath
Hey meeper, the RS site is up and running again.

I've added it to the UK Lighting Sources thread with a brief description. If you could give me any other info on things they sell that could be of use in this project, then I would be grateful wink.gif
Eyebath
To Meeper, Pez and F2hunter,

I've ordered the bowls. If there's anything needs discussing about the order, we should chat about it here, just to save me PMing everyone. (Unless it's private) tongue.gif
Redrum
Hi

I'm new, just bought the guide and started reading up on this. Not got time to do much more to this for a few weeks at least but i thought i might buy the lcd monitor to use as a monitor until i get time to start. I've had a look round the net and though this thread and these are the ones i have found that are on the compatible list that i have found for sale in the UK:

Simply.co.uk:
BenQ FP567s £270

ebuyer.com:
NEC 1560VM 15ins £290

microdirect:
Benq FP567 V2 Beige TFT monitor £250

amazon.co.uk:
Acer AL506 15" TFT £220

procomdirect.com:
BenQ FP567S £230

savastore.com:
BenQ FP557S 15" £220
Acer AL506 £235
NEC LCD1560VM £265

TechStore.co.uk
CMV 1512 £235

So any suggestions on which one as i don't really know much about lcds. I need one that will definatly be good for games, so do I just get the one with the lowest response time or is there more to it that that?

Redrum
Eyebath
Hi redrum,

From that list, I would get the benq from microdirect. The V2 models have 450:1 CR and look absolutely gorgeous. They are also a piece of cake to strip. Hope this whittles it down a bit wink.gif
Meeper
I've only got a non-rusty hacksaw. I've been wondering how I'm gonna cut the hole too. blink.gif
Eyebath
Well I've cut aluminium quite easily with said rusty handsaw, so I'll have a go with the norpro. Might take me years though blink.gif

Anyone who has a norpro: what are my chances?
brainchild
Know anyone with a Dremel?
Meeper
I almost had a dremel. But then I admitted that I would only be buying it for the DIY prestige, and didn't actually have a use for it. rolleyes.gif

Those round type hacksaw blades (rather than the flat ones) should work, but will just be sloooooow.
brainchild
Quite slow. Also take great care not to damage the bowl; warp, scratch etc.

There is a post in the compatible monitor list that says it should be ok so fingers crossed, I also thought i would give the tv tuner a go - i couldnt find out any more information but i can always return it if it isn't good enough, i will let you know what i find out.

Hey Anwyl - did you ever get the tuner? What did you find out?

Good news, I've been testing my lighting rig, I got my MT400SX outside on the patio table, lit her up, wow. It illuminated the whole street. Think I'm joking? I'll get pictures

The lamp is excellent. I have not shone it through my LCD yet, still waiting for a piece of glass for my panel frame. I highly recommend it, but it might be worth contacting Garry Charles about a smaller one (read the post on uk lighting)

Thats great news eyebath! Glad eveything is going well yourside!

I was about to buy an electronic ballast (ready to plug in), but after reading your advised 'Uk lighting' thread, im now gonna go for the ones you purchased, itl save me alot of money, just hope i can get a good talk/round-up of wiring the beast up..

well, waitin to get paid, to pay for my liquid panel which has been on order until i pay..

Tempered Glass is starting to P"$$ me off, ive tried everywhere in birmingham with no luck.. grr

Thinking of getting a cheap floodlight like This and taking out its glass and using it for my projector.. ?! maybe?!
Eyebath
Hi mate,

This has turned out to be a great lighting setup, seriously. The lamp was dear, but you could maybe get it locally. I would contact Garry Charles actually about that M400SX lamp - I think it's the actual UK version of the one the US fellas are using. His details are in the Bucks Lighting post in the UK Lighting thread wink.gif

I will help you wire your kit, I have drawn up some diagrams and it's reeealllly easy when you know how, you can't go wrong. I'll post one later to this thread to show you, and talk you through it.

Is there anywhere locally that sells mirrors? They will do tempered, as will any glass place.
f2hunter
thanks i will do, i dont mind spending upto 70squid on a lamp..

as for tempered glass, ive tried everyhing but with no luck, birmingham is usless. sad.gif
pez209
Eyebath,
Do you think that USHIO lamp would work with the ballast you already have? If not, why not?

Maybe we could do a group buy on this too...
Eyebath
I will defo enquire about it.

I'll see if there's one similar if not the same in the UK.

My lamp has the slightest green tint to it, impossible to tell once the lamp is at full operating power but it gives the lamp a very fresh white tint. I would love to compare it to one of these USHIOs.

I think the tridonic ballast would work, it runs sodium and metal halide, but I'm not sure if it only runs conversion lamps. huh.gif

You will be able to get a Tridonic HPS ballast online no probs....actually don't quote me on that..
anwyl
Hi Eyebath,

Havn't checked the forums in a while - this place has realy took off!

The tuner arrived from dabs no problem, as usual. It is progressive scan and it works fine on a regular monitor, the menus are a bit clunky but usable. I havn't started building the projector yet so can comment on what it looks like on the big screen. Bought the fresnel, triplet and tuner then funds started to run low - been saving now though and one more pay day should do it then i can order the monitor and lamp equipment. I think im going to get the Benq FP567 V2 Beige TFT monitor at £250 but still havn't decided what bulb or ballast etc to go for - trying to get my head around all the information in these forums.

Any-road best get back to work now,

Cheers Anwyl
Eyebath
Hi anwyl,

I have found a definite cheap route for the lighting, and all the sources I used are in the UK Lighting thread.

If you need any help getting anything, let me know, we have found an awful lot since you last visited wink.gif

Good monitor choice btw, great price too.

Good luck,

Steve

I bought the fresnels and projection triplet from Lumenlab, am using a Samsung Syncmaster 510mp (integral tuner), have just picked up my tempered glass today, and am waiting for my lamp & ballast from Bucks Lighting (MT400SX-HOR: same as Eyebath's; I had originally ordered the M400SX/BU as used over the pond, but they're out of stock & I could be looking at a 4 week lead time - AAARRGHH! Euro 2004 v. soon = impatience).

On the subject of impatience, I couldn't wait to see a projected image so I stuck in an ordinary tungsten 200w bulb. The image isn't too bright (lamp is only about 2000 lumens) and the image isn't as clear as it will be because the lamp is frosted rather than clear glass, but the results are very promising (if a little "warm"). I can't wait to get hold of the MH lamp.
Here's a quick snap from last night (since the lamp is about a twentieth as bright as the eventual one, I took the liberty of leaving the shutter open for a couple of seconds - I won't cheat when I have all the proper kit).
Eyebath
Haha, excellent biggrin.gif

Tell me about Euro 2004! I'm thinking about building a bar for my pj room..

The warmth will vanish with the lamp you ordered. Look at someone when you first turn it on, while it's warming up - they will appear bright green wink.gif

I would suggest checking your fresnels are perfectly upright amd square in the enclosure, as the left side of the image is slightly blurry, and this could be why. It might also be that your fresnels are slightly warped, mounted them onto glass with corerect this.

I haven't cheated yet, only with a transparency, this is because I don't want to get a single speck of dust on my panel, I will be doing more woodwork to it so sawdust will be a big issue (haha big issue! 'No thanks mate, I've no change...') lol

I did get hold of some 2mm glass today to keep the polarized side of my panel clean.

Projector greatness ETA: 3 days...
Eyebath
Oh and btw Hypno, Can you please let me know how you get on with Bucks Lighting, pm me with feedback if you can and I will add it to the original post I made about them? I wanna get this feedback thing off the ground, it would make a useful index for people to look up info on.

Cheers cool.gif
Eyebath
Hi guys,

Please can you read this.

Tell me if there's anything your particular about keeping, as I'm gonna prune a lot of crap from the 'components' thread (you should have noticed a few changes already)

I might re-present some of the better posts we made with your permission.

Cheers,

And if all goes well buy the ballast, ignitor, cap ect from Lamp Ignition Ltd.

Thanks to the very useful uk lighting thread.

Yeah, the field fresnel (glass sandwiched) is a little out of square at present, as is the lcd panel itself. I haven't fixed anything in place until I get hold of the MH lamp. I reckon that the installation of the lamp and it's plumbing will determine the eventual positioning of my optics. Currently pretty much everything is wedged in place with pegs (very high tech) rolleyes.gif . I wonder how much of the edge blur is due to the size of my temp light source (roughly 4" across). Also, in order to see past the projector while I'm seated, I'm having to keep it very low; this is giving me more keystoning than I can correct on a vertical screen without the image blurring like the clappers at top & bottom. To counter this problem I intend to rig up a bracket & bungee affair to have the screen lean out at the top. That should bring it facing more square-on to the projector & to the viewer.

Eye bath: I'll PM you with my experiences of Bucks Lighting as they unfold.

Keep up the good work. wink.gif
f2hunter
just orderd a E40 Cerm base from Greenfields Hydroponics Ltd smile.gif
Eyebath
Evening fellas,

Great news everyone, sounds like the balls are rolling (oo-er)

Hypno - thanks for the PM. I warned Garry about the new-found fame he'd recieve after I advertised him! Let's hope he can cope.

Have you considered going the 'futon-bunk' route hypno? It's one I'm very interested in, I'm just having trouble finding one. See what I'm talking about here.

f2hunter - great news about your monitor - payday finally came? wink.gif

I would go ahead and order the rest of the kit anyway - it will work with any 400W MH lamp I'm sure. If you enquire about the M400BUH, try to find out the size and shape if you can, and let us know what you find.

BTW did the norpro guys get their emails?
f2hunter
yep i got..

Oh and Anthony Bates gave me Gary Charles details on the lamp, ive emailed Gary regarding a lamp (M400BUH) and all the other bits i need for powering it up, just waiting for a reply.

Eyebath, ebay UK came up with several matches for "Futon Bunk" :

Here is a link to a shop with a light kit and panel....

http://www.gadaffy.ch.vu/

Use google translation to figure out what it says...

I know it's not in the UK, but it's closer than the US :-)

I like the sound of their 400w light kit for 82 Euros.

Thanks for that flyboy, I guess I'd just dismissed eBay as an option (having trouble finding a lot of things on eBay at the moment)

wink.gif
Eyebath
Interesting link pez, I like the looks of the little reflector, perfect for a lightbox. Even though I've got a norpro, I'm still open minded about trying new stuff. I may have to order one.

Wow, they have a varifocal lens too.

By the way, I have my pj working. I'm really impressed even though it needs loads of tweaking (light leaks, screen frame warped slightly, ffcs showing in projection) I did get a pic of my results, if anyone would like to see it, pm me your email address and I'll send you it. I don't wanna post it up here, the picture might offend someone (you'll see why) smile.gif

Oh, I've just noticed I'm 'enlightened'. Sweet!

No prob, Eye! The only problem I can think of is that the cost shipping something that large might be prohibitive. Maybe you could find a seller that lives near by so you could just pick it up...

Eyebath
erm...not quite. I can email it and you'll see. Not a bad idea though wink.gif

It isn't that offensive, I just thought it would be inapropriate as a result image!

Yeah you're right...I don't see anyone offering delivery. Shame they can't be dissasembled sad.gif

I might make something out of a few bits of scaffold... huh.gif hmmm..

I love that idea though, it would save me so much space. I might have to go back to the old idea of putting the pj to the left of my sofa and and adjusting to forward fresnel for horizontal keystoning wink.gif
Meeper
Wouldn't the projected image move if it was on the top of the futon thing, as people sat down and moved around?

And I see what you mean about the 'inappropriate' image. Wow, I never realised they allowed that stuff to be shown in civilised society. blink.gif

Perhaps. Maybe it would be better to get a single bunk and just put a small sofa under it.

Actually, the scaffold thing is not a bad idea...I'll look into it.

Btw, there is a PAL version of the N6, just looking for suppliers (0 found so far)

I also thought the image was disgraceful. Dirty bear biggrin.gif
Meeper
RS do some rigid framing that might do the job, and would look better than scaffolding. You're basically talking an upside down L shape, with some stabilising feet on the bottom. Plus it would be a brushed silver finish, which would fit in the the projector. wink.gif

I'll have a looksee, and get back to you with the prices of various bits that could be used....
Meeper
Okay, two of the things they do would be viable. Not overly cheap, but relatively good looking (not designer, but better than scaffold, unless you're going for the urban look tongue.gif ). It's getting late, so I'll see if I can pull some pics of the RS website tomorrow. smile.gif

A few months back I contacted an ebay seller that had used his futon bunk for this very application (AAMOF, its his pic that I posted on this site, and Eye linked to a few posts back). Here is what he had to say:

QUOTE
Yeah, it worked out really well as a projector mount/equipment rack. The original reason I did it was because I live in an apartment and I had a CRT projector (Sony D50Q) that weighed 120lbs.  I used it for that projector and then when I upgraded to a DLP projector (NEC LT150) I used it as well.  Didn't really have a problem with a jiggling picture, although if you move around hard enough it is possible to make it jiggle quite a bit (basically no sex on it during movies, but normal moving around is just fine).  I can say I highly recommend it, just watch your head when you stand up =).
Eyebath
Hey thanks for that info OKflyboy, very useful. wink.gif

I'm just worried about the weight. I have added a bottom chamber to my pj (as drawn in my lighting setup thread) which gives it 6" of elevation, and means I can tuck all my wires and kit into it. Gives my loads of space in my enclosure.

I will weight mine to give you an idea of how strong a structure I need...

No norpros I'm afraid today boys. Hopefully they will come tomorrow, I'll let you all know. sad.gif
Eyebath
I just weighed her up..

5 Stone - 70lbs - 32kg

So, she's a fatty alright, but compared to that guy's CRT projector she's a lightweight wink.gif

I'm moving to a new flat in July, so I'll see if I can find a futon bunk in the area (Norwich).
Meeper
Cut down on the lead radiation lining. It'll help with the weight issues. wink.gif

Are you sure it's 5 stone?? Damn, I'm gonna have to build a shelf strong enough to hold a child. Hmmm, my neice my have a part to play in my projector after all.....
Eyebath
Yep, 5 stone and rising!

I was watching Minority Report on it the other night, and I swear I heard the table creak...I've never jumped up so fast in my life.

I don't know how the hell I'm gonna get it to uni, I might have to have it crane-lifted in. Actually, I could probably contort myself into it, and live there. It's big enough for a family of elves/strange small people, so it should fit an adult. Mmm, toasty!

I have notched my norpro. Theres a pic on my lighting thread. I'm just trying to work out the spacing, then I'm gonna put it in.

I'm going away for a week on Friday, so I'll try and get some updates tomorrow night.
Eyebath
Hi guys, and bye..

I'm away now until next Sat.

Hope everything goes ok, if you need me email me or pm.

Norpros will be sent in the morning biggrin.gif

Pls take a look at my results page in the Project Gallery.
