There's been a buzz going on at avs regarding a new low cost grey screen called the Optoma Graywolf.

It has a very good 1.8 gain, which will help lumen challenged projectors such as the LLs, a grey-based screen to improve black levels, and most importantly, a low cost. A side benefit is that the screen texture further reduces SDE so a smooth picture will be rendered much smoother compared to a similar price Da-lite white screen. The cost below is for a pull down model which is currently the only type available.

msrp $199 for the 92" 16:9 DS-9092DM
msrp $299 for the 106" 16:9 DS-9106DM

Looks good, well within the pricerange of a DIY project. Not worth mucking around if it's that affordable.

I wonder if they deliver to Oz rolleyes.gif

Great find. That is very reasonable. Are you planning on purchasing one?

Buy.com has them for the following:

92" - $130.99
106" - $163.99

I've found that using a grey screen really does give great blacks, but as good as they are, the whites suffer as they appear (as you can guess), grey. I would urge anyone intersted to run a test simply using some white and grey paper taped to a wall.

Not that it much matters, but I ended up going with white as I just preferred whiter whites over blacker blacks.

The concern over dingy whites has always been the achilles heel of grey screens. However, this owner seemed to think the pluses outweighed the minuses.

He's using a fairly medium contrast lcd (700:1) but his take (as well as others) has been positive.

So my view is that everything you love about the pq of the LL will be further enhanced by the Graywolf.

Sadly, some of you will be wanting even larger screens biggrin.gif

As to me, I'm wall-based some I'm sticking to my Lowes Valspar grey.

That's a good find Victor. Not trying to crap on your thread, but I would recommend that folks read through the comments as there do appear to be issues with viewing angles. Also, there appears to be some suspect quality in their shipping(wrong models, damage, etc..)

But yeah, if anyone snags one of these I would love to hear their response. I think most of the feedback on AVS is with commercial projectors vs. DIY.

The *one* issue I'm having with my projector is the amount of brightness. All of my whites are more of a dingy grey right now and it's starting to bug, especially in "dark" movies. I'm hoping the new reflector that Brain mentioned will help with this.

cheers,

Maler,

Nothing's perfect and no harm, no foul. Even with commercials you can't please everyone.

After tweaking my gamma and luminence settings in ffdshow I was able to make the image much brighter. However the blacks are a tad bit washed out. I wonder if this screen would be perfect for this type of scenerio. I wonder if I could still keep the brightness while enhancing the blacks that got washed. What does everyone think?

Thats possible, Ive done a similar thing with my results ... brightened them up a bunch with gamma ect, but blacks suffered.

I consistently adjust up and down, trying to find the happy medium.

I would be weary of a gain screen for our LL pj's though.

Even though in most scenes your screen will appear to evenly lit to the human eye, there is a slight uneveness to it. Even a perfectly alligned PJ is going to have a this effect somewhat. This is due mainly to that inverse square law in physics governing light ect.

With a gain screen, yeah your image will brighten, but unfortunatly so will the dimming factor of the edges. A gain screen may not be sutiable for us. Brain has said this in the past, but Im not certain if anyone has really tried it out.
