I have had this projector mostly done for a month or two now but haven't really posted any pics. So I figured I would do it to show people some samples of what the 17" PJ with the standard triplet looks like.
The monitor I used for this is the Samsung 712n
In some of the pictures you might be able to see some big finger prints on the right side of the screen. This happened when I was using super glue then touched the LCD... even though I didn't get any super glue on my hands the LCD still got some residue on it. If anybody knows a way to get it off, it would be greatly appreciated if they would tell me how. I also have dirt and stuff in my fresnels. This is all proof that when people say to use gloves and stuff they aren't just saying that.
Anyways...the pics...
i'll start with the popular Leeloo scene in The Fifth Element. Now all of the pics except one are high definition, i'll note with one isn't when it comes.

Awesome results Jayman, I'm starting planning stages for my second projector, any chance you are going to do a full plog with all the details of your box?

The lens was from LL. The player is Zoomplayer, i'm using Dscaler as my video decoder and for the HD stuff ffdshow is doing the deinterlacing. ohh yea...and the grainyness from the pictures is from the camera.
The Screen is the 120" PVC screen designed by DrudgeMart but at 16:9 there is a few inches left over on the top and bottom so the projected image with gladiator was roughly 115" and the Fifth element might have been like 110"

Holy K'moly Jayman
Those are INCREDIBLE images.
I like the way you photographed the
LL projector behind the projected image, gives it a great
perspective on the actual size of the image.
I've been in a "holding pattern" 'till the LL ProLens kit is available, but your
results with just the Stanadard Lens is just amazing -- not to mention
a lot cheaper.
Do you have a plog on the construction of you pj?
Excellent Job,
C.

Those are some very sharp, high quality looking screen shots ...... You seem to have gotten great focus and resolution .... and good even lighting ....
The only thing, I see out of place is that your pictures seem excessively BLUE ... what bulb are you using ....
all what settings did you have your camera on??

I may be wrong, but that looks as if he may just have the blue component of his RGB signal cranked. Bulb tinge, when I have noticed it has always tended towards yellow or green. Has your experience been different?
PS: Incredible images. Top notch!

can u tell us which lens from 3dlens?
fresnel lens:
Large Fresnel Lens #A260 260x260
Large Fresnel Lens #A310b 310x310
Large Fresnel Lens #A395a 395x395
Large Fresnel Lens #A395b 395x395
Large Fresnel Lens #F550 320x400
i assume a395a (330focal) & a395b (220focal)?

The only thing that I know will remove superglue is acetone. What it might do to any film or coating on your LCD is unknown.
The results are stunning. In the 4:3 image, did you have to shrink it some to get good edge to edge brightness? ([edit] not critisizing, just trying to get a grasp of the capabilities of the standard triplet)
Any blueness in the image should be easily corrected by changing the whitepoint setting.

It looks like the focus on the edges and corners is pretty good.
I read where some using the DIY lenses have complained of the corners being out of focus.
Can you post a pic of some detail in a movie scene on the corner of the screen and also a shot of the desktop with the clock in the lower right corner?
If those lenses are focused all the way across the image they may well be worth the extra change.

The Blue is actually from the camera, its kinda bad about doing that with just about every pic taken.
DeathRay64, whenever I play anything in 4:3 I just full screen in zoomplayer then scale down the actual image so its like zooming out of the picture that way I get all of the picture on the screen. But the brightness on the sides isn't as much as the center and its also a little out of focus on the sides, this could be because of the way the frensels are not properly placed and may be a bit bent or it could just be that the lens isn't able to handle the 17" LCD as its not totally suppose to.
When the pro lenses come out im pretty sure i'm going to buy them because the throw distance is terrible right now, where its at now (8 feet from the screen the projected image is probably 130inches or more, a good big of the image doesn't even get on the screen.
Keep in mind that all of these images are high definition (except that last one) so in reality my projector is equal to or worse then most peoples here at LL. This just shows that there is an insane amount of potential for these projectors but because of the limited supply(legal) of high definition matterial the potential can't be achieved.
And fcheze2...yes I do beleive those are it

blake, the results do kinda look like that...but when you take a picture of a 120" image then shrink it down to 800x600 and about 8" it tends to look misleading, you also can't see a lot of the dirt detail from the fresnels. I'm very happy with the projector but like just about every other DIY projector it lacks brightness. If that could get fixed I couldn't be happier with the projector.
I think i'm also going to take some screen shots of the best looking high def I have ever seen...Shrek 2

I got a bit of cheapie super glue [Walmart generic brand] on my LCD [it was a bit dry by the time I touched the LCD, so your results may be different]. I used a mister clean magic eraser and it came off in about 20 seconds per spot [I had glue-finger prints in three corners and counted while I did it, trying to do the least rubs possible to avoid damaging the screen. No marks were left on the LCD by the sponge]. Dampen the sponge, shake its excess out, and rub in circles. I did not press hard. Use a flat side instead of a pointed corner after you shake the water out to that flat side. Make sure you let it dry before plugging it back in.

this is from right off the top of my head but,
Samsung 712n lcd - compusa
220/330fl frensnels - 3dlens.com
2x - Evercool PCAC - lumenlab
Coolermaster Aerogate 3 - don't remember
coil ballast - atlantalightbulbs.com
S400DD Lamp - altlantalightbulbs.com
LL wiring kit(which became completely useless, the switch broke and the breaker is too small to hold all the stuff in the box, after about an hour the projector would just shut itself off)
LexanXL10 - homedepot
Standard Triplet - LL
Ikea reflector - ireplica.com
12v adapter - LL, but later replaced with a larger one from Radioshack
Everything is pretty much the standard stuff.

Hey thats great , no more than great. The reasults are fantastic. I would like to make a similar projector with same great results.
I am already planning to buy my part.
A triplet 80mm
one fressnel 330mm
one fressnel 220mm
and an hqi 250 watts
can you e-mail me any plans or how you arranged your fressnels and lenses.
I dont have much knowledge about lenses so would be getting problems to make adjustements to get a clear picture.
thanks.

Just open your Yellow Pages and look for a glass shop. There are plenty where I live and tempered glass is less than $20 CDN for our projectors.

NICE JOB!!!!! Your results are an inspiration man! Really even and bright. (I hope my end result comes near this.) Question though...how big is your projected image on those last few shots with the Pro Lens? How far away from the screen is your projector?
Also, looking forward to seeing what difference the new Pro Reflector will make on your system. (Might need to wear shades!

DJH: The screen is 133" at 4:3 so probably around 115" to 120" at 16:9. The lens of the projector is about 14 feet from the screen
To everybody asking for a plog: I don't have one and don't think I will until I get a new box and straigten everything out(have been too lazy to do all that). I don't have one now cuz I don't want to send the wrong message to new builders saying that "you can halfass the projector and still get awesome results." My box and everything inside of it is pretty ugly

alright so i'm a little confused..did you use all of the standard lenses and a 17" lcd and you still have a 130" screen from 14" away? I thought the standard lens would give a much bigger screen from that far away?

Feb 22 2006, 10:03 PM
no, I had the standard lens and that gave me a throw of about 8' then I switched to a pro setup which gave me those last couple pics and a throw of 14'

Jayman,
I love your results! When I first was thinking of joining the community I looked at your results. They really made an impact on me. I joined and am FINALLY getting the parts together to build my own HD PJ with DVI input. My question to you is, where are you getting all your HD material? What HD resolution are talking about? 480p, 720p, 1080i or 1080p? Again, thanks for the inspiration!
