djnigma
Ah man that sucks, Neo. When i ordered, they quoted R1399 inc, so i think i will cancel that order and re-order tomorrow (monday) and get the special. Thanks for the heads up! Currently checking out that Tv converter, shot.
Helliox
Hey all,

glad to see other SA's. me from JHB.

received my lenses a year ago just havent had time to start smile.gif

I think this will be a great motivator to start my PJ.

you can get the V-Stream Xpert TV-LCD TV BOX from www.simplicity.co.za for R786.00
or do a google for maybe a cheaper price.
djnigma
Awesome man, welcome to the SA thread! Now get off your butt and start that projector. We will keep you constantly harassed until you finish it. So tell us what you plan on building and what components you have/are getting.. Thanks for the Tv box link, i'll check it out now. As a test i just plugged my xbox into a Leadtek Tv tuner card and it was fine, no noticeable lag, so i think im just going to use that.

I dont feel so far away from everybody now, what area are you staying in ?
Neo Cortex
A friend sms me the price on this item http://i20.photobucket.com/albums/b223/Neo...-16dm-Front.jpg +- R600 ex vat
Helliox
Neo,djnigma thanks for the warm reception biggrin.gif

I live in Alberton and you Neo?

thanks for the post on the samsung I'll pickup one tomorrow,i have an account with rectron but the specs on the 15"gigabyte can't compare with the samsung also the price is about R20.00 more expensive .

I found this lamp from RS Electronics :

p/n 305-6882

400w HQT-T Osram metal halide
CRI: 83
33 000 Lumens
5200K colour temp

Price : R557.06 vat incl.
djnigma
Noooo, not RS!! Rediculous price! jhardisty got a similar osram bulb for R300 odd, see above. Look in the yellow pages for lighting suppliers and phone them for Metal Halide bulbs. In Joburg you will get many suppliers. Please for the love of all that is resonably priced and holy don't buy from RS. Thanks for the price on the VGA box.
Helliox
ok so I definitely wont buy from RS then. laugh.gif

Howzit

I can get a gigabyte lcd for about 1100 ex vat, I called a tech at rectron who said they are not a allowed to open the gigabyte lcd as they dont have a grading to do so, they just send them back overseas for repair so he was unable to tell me if it had ffc issues. So i got the samsung.

I reside in Northcliff near cresta
Neo Cortex
Oh and another thing CONGRATULATIONS we made it to page 4
jhardisty
Hey Helliox.

Just a note to all, the price I quoted was for the bulb only R350 ex vat, no control gear. Will hopefully get final pricing tomorrow. Nice specs, very close to the one I'm looking at but definitely not at R557 if it's just the bulb. Hopefully my R350 hasn't gone up too much with this damned R/$.

Hey guys, sorry for butting in here. Just wanted to let you know that www.x2vga.com has a great adapter for hooking your xbox up to VGA monitor. I ordered it a tried it for my 17" BenQ monitor and its SWEEEET! Supports HD in 480p, 720p and 1080i resolutions.

Converter also has VGA-in which means you can hook your computer AND Xbox up to your pj and switch between the two by simply pushing a button. Haven't tried it yet, but it seems perfect.

Btw, I'm going for the Samsung 510n as well. Costs me equivalent to $250 US here in Sweden, but I figure it's a good investment. Im making mounting trays for my fresnels and the Samsung LCD at the moment and I saw someone posted the measurements for the LCD-frame of the Samsung 510n in this thread. Those figures are dead accurate, right?

Cheers!

Hi MrTwiddle

The measurements are correct i did it myself , with regards to that video to vga item i dont think its readily available here ,but thanks for the tip .

Thanks Mr Twiddle. BTW i don't think it's possible to 'butt in' in a forum wink.gif That's the whole point of one!

I went to sahara today to fetch my 510N Black on special for R1540 inc VAT. 40km later i plug it in and.... dead pixel - aaaagh. So another 40km later and i have a new one that works. Yay. I also ordered my tempered glass this morning. The lady asked me if i was jonathan. Hehe. So i just need some wood cut and then its buildin time. Can't Wait!!

Heya! If it's available to Sweden it should be available to South Africa. Heck, we are even in the same time zone! biggrin.gif

I paid $78 shipped for the converter, which I think is a great bargain, if you're not going to use the projector for regular TV watching (which in case the Viewsonic N6, might be a better choice). Check out the website, I'm pretty sure they will ship to SA. Also, they tag the package "Sample" and declares the value to $19.95. That way it's toll free. Legal? Hell no. Cheaper? Oh yeah.

Later,
Twiddle

Ah Ha.. Found it --

Helliox Posted This.....

I found this lamp from RS Electronics :

p/n 305-6882

400w HQT-T Osram metal halide
CRI: 83
33 000 Lumens
5200K colour temp

Price : R557.06 vat incl.
Helliox
hey guys,

Neo,thanks for the post on the lamp and control gear will look in to getting one of those.

I agree with djnigma that RS is extremely expensive try a different supplier.

Starting my PJ soon ,should have all parts by the weekend.now I must just find time to do it smile.gif
jhardisty
My guy turned out to be expemsive as well, bulb R300, control gear R800 ohmy.gif . Phoned Lite Glo, they do not have a brach down here but have "agreements" with a store called
Superteam Electrical 9751065 Osram 400w/d 197.50 bulb only. They don't have the control gear. Said I should try Waco 5931114. If they don't have then I'll have it shipped down.

Just phoned around, can get everything from Plumstead Electrical for 652.19 inclusive. How come the 1st time I phoned them they didn't have any MHs???

Neo can you post the models of the control gear you've got as they're not a 100% sure that they gave the right ones.

Got my projector screen up last night, finally. Took me two nights and 4 bits to drill holes in the bloody wall. Will post some pics on the weekend.

Gonna start building frames and inner structure as well. My glass only arrives next week so I can't go any further than that. sad.gif
djnigma
Wow that is expensive! Get the stuff from Plumstead Elec. They did have MH when i phoned them so maybe the person you spoke to is a bit clueless. Glad to hear you finally got your screen up...

My progress:
Well today i decided to start framing my LCD. Man what a disaster it turned out to be. First i broke the white plastic frame and bent the metal frame, so my last attempt at securing the LCD was to silicone the glass screen into its flimsy black frame. Took me 3 hours to do and litres of Windowlene to get stray silicone off the pixel part of the glass as there is only about 2mm of blank glass between the pixels and the black plastic frame! Finally, i have some sort of bond around most of the perimeter. Hope it is strong enough to support the glass vertically. So do something else with your screen instead of my bugger up. Here are 2 pics of the messy result:
