Thanks Neo, that's just what I was looking for... maybe for the next build.. although 4 temp probes is probably a bit overkill, but I wanted to have at least two...
thanks again.
cheers,

Just phoned Plumstead Electrical again to double check on the bulb etc. It all depends on who you speak to because now I can get it for almost a 100 bucks cheaper

. So, all I need now is my glass which I should get tomorrow.

 M&E says that National Glass has "promised" to deliver on Monday....like they promised to have it delivered today. Wanted to pick up the rest of my glass, but they closed at 3 already!

well at least I got my lighting

jhardisty what about floodlight manufacturers ?
i'm sure the glass they use in those big floodlight boxes could be what you looking for.

Actually thought of that today when I picked up my lighting. The normal casing for our MH is freaking HUGE

and I don't think they'd let go of the piece of glass alone. By the way, the casing is a wopping R873!
The sodium ballast is also quite heavy. The MH is lighter a bit smaller but unfortunately only pushes out 27K lumens.
Wired up all the components, flipped the switch and it worked
I' may be able to post the pics tomorrow, as my wife's laptop only has one USB and I'm using my mobile HD in it right now (downloading

).
This thing is bright

and pure white.
How are the rest of you guys coming along, haven't seen anything lately?
OT: Downloaded 800MB from 7pm - 7am last night...on dialup, that's why I'm running my mobile HD cos I ran out of space. WOW!

Jul 31 2005, 07:28 AM
Yeah, those floodlights are expensive and the glass is the wrong shape.
Glad your light worked - i haven't fired mine up yet. I was a little concerned when they gave me a sodium ballast, but apparently the new philips mh bulbs are universal and run on anything. Don't you just love modern technology? So is this bulb going to be bright enough for a decent projection?
My construction was side tracked yesterday by a sudden cycling outing to cape point - oh well. Was busy on my focus box - just a clarification: The bulb arc, fresnel centres and lens centre all need to be in the same straight line right? So if your lenses are offset lower than the centre of your box (vertically) then you need to move your proj lens down a bit, right? I see in the plans that they have just put the proj lens in the centre of the front panel, but that doesn't sound right to me unless your fresnels etc. are also in the centre of the box.
PS: Get DSL! We download 3 GB a day sometimes
jhardisty
Jul 31 2005, 04:50 PM
Basically, the centres of everything has to line up.
Considering 192 ADSL. What do you have if you're downloading 3GB a day!? Must cost a fortune uncapped.

Jul 31 2005, 06:02 PM
No don't. DSL192 is a complete waste of time. R270pm. For R349 you get twice the speed - DSL384 (what i have). We have a 30GB account from axxess R349 pm (cheaper at R299 from Imaginet0 . You can get a 30GB account on promo from WebAfica for R199!! for the next 3 months. It is a good time to get broadband since prices are coming down a lot and the waiting list is getting longer and longer. Took us 5 weeks to get.
Okay i'll make sure the optical centres are aligned. That's what i thought was the case, but the guide sure as hell doesn't seem to emphasize that. Did more painting and built my focus box today (minus lens). Now if i could just get that friggin glass i could actually get this thing done sooner... If M&E let us down tomorrow i am going to crap on them from a dizzy height...

Is that www.webafrica.co.za? because their 30GB is R500!
djnigma
Aug 1 2005, 08:40 AM
Wow those bulbs shots are awesome. I don't have a capasculator - how much was yours? But i have exactly the same ballast - hehe. It weighs about 10KG i reckon. I'd like to see a pic of your reflector.
Yes, webafrica.co.za is R500 normally, but i can get you the promo code from myadsl.co.za that makes it R199 as a special to the forum members. Or join yourself. It's an amazing source of broadband information for SA.
Hoo-freakin-ray, M&E just phoned to say glass is here. Going to pick it up now. 333 Main Rd Retreat (past Plumstead).

Yeah, I called them and they said it wasn't there. They were going to call when it came. About 2mins later it was there. They should check in house before telling you it's not there. Now I can start building my frames.
Capacitor was around R85.
Will be exchanging reflector tonight, hopefully. Will post pic as soon as I get it.
On the topic of ADSl, I just read an article on ITWEB that ICASA has recommended in their latest report that Telkom not charge a monthly fee at all, only an initial once off. Telkom has not responded. Send me the details.
djnigma
Aug 1 2005, 12:42 PM
Yes M&E are a uselesss bunch, so i won't be dealing with them in future. Glad you are getting your glass to though - finally!
I think i'll do without a cap for now and see how it goes (my elec bill is split 3 ways anyway ;P )
Yes, ICASA report nailed telkom saying that line rental should fall away, cap should be much higher and fixed IP addresses should be provided. This is very good news but it isn't regulation yet so it still has to be formulated and passed by minister Poison Ivy. But like i said, DSL should become a lot cheaper in the next couple of months if everything goes well, which means if you get it soon, you won't be 10 000th in the queue when it is cheaper.
The promo for Web Africa is:
> 21 July 2005 - Web Africa is pleased to announce the following promotional
> pricing on ADSL 30GB exclusive to MyADSL viewers only:
>
> 30GB ADSL for R199pm (incl)
> Promotional Code: MY459183 (expires 31/10/05)
>

Here is the thread on the forum:

jonathan, you motivated me to rig up my bulb. So i did. And MAN my retinas are now drippy pieces of biltong it was so bright. Question: does your ignitor buzz, and how long should it buzz until it switches off? I read that after a few minutes the arc is established and the ignitor switches off. Is this true?
Nice fan Neo... Don't think you nee 200cfm tho

Spoze that will let you turn it down to minimum speed and no noise then.

the reflector, about 2-2.5x bigger than your one. Needs some polishing as it's not as shiny as the smaller one.

Yeah, but try finding one without. Cut out spaces for bulb. Thanks to my wife for buying me a dremel tool (Fragram version), available at Mica for R275. She bought the last one for R375 a few days earlier, oh well. Works great
