Hi all you other NZers,

I thought that I would share my experiences in purchasing my new Haas style PJs parts locally.

The reflector

Just found a bunch called Southern Hospitality http://www.southernhospitality.co.nz
Click on Bakery then Moulds then on items 61-70 to see what must be one of the best PJ reflectors around! even those US guys will be jealous.

The Lamps/Ballast

As for lamps the simplest option is to head for those infamous bunch The Switched on Gardener www.sog.co.nz . They have a reasonable range of lamps and ballasts although they aren't into the electronic ballasts as far as I know. I have heard that Radium Lighting are also ok http://www.yellow.co.nz/site/radiumlighting/ and can do the more advanced stuff and also Ushio lamps etc.

Tempered Glass/Lexan

Well I tried to source some Lexan XL 10 or any kind of Lexan product but haven't yet found a supplier. I am not really going to follow this one up any further as my local Glass shop here in Nelson has been able to get me some tempered glass cut to suit in 4mm thickness for 9 dollars NZ it has to be ordered from Auckland but its cheap and my lamp has a UV filter coating anyway.

The rest is elementary really - LCDs from www.pricespy.co.nz and a bit of wood from the local Placemakers etc.

If anyone else has found other places they'd recommend then I'd love to hear from ya's.

Hey,

another Kiwi builder here. I think its a good idea to have a topic of our own listing where to source stuff for our PJ's. Those moulds do look good (I'm guessing you mean pages 91-100 though?). I've purchased a BenQ 567s for this project and have got the lenses etc from LL. I'm still weighing up my options for the bulb and ballast, I might shoot an email off to Radium lighting, see what they can offer. My old man is an electrician and he is talking to some of his suppliers to see what they can offer. He did say however that he hasn't seen electronic metal halide ballasts in NZ, so I might just settle for a coil ballast to save the trouble.

Anyways good to hear from ya, I'll keep you updated if anything worth mentioning arrises.

Cheers

*EDIT* Just emailed Radium about this lamp HQI-TS 400W/D FC2 12X1

hi Lurch and Detract and all you good people on this forum

good to know of some kiwi diy pj enthusiast on this forum...
who knows there could well be more lurking in the woodwork!!

excellent find there Lurch on those lovely s/steel bowls, Ive given up looking, got
outbid on e-bay for a nor pro a wee while back, have you guys bought any yet?,
are they truly semi spherical?, just looking at the pics , they seem highly polished.

I gave RADIUM a phone call hour back, they do not supply the electronic ballast,
I would like to get one, as I have noticed my present lighting is flickering.

At what stage are you guys with your pj? I have most of the bits and pieces, actually got the stuff last xmas, then lost interest until recently.

I have got a 6mm double sided uv protected lexan from a local supplier , think their supply is fm "these lot"
my 2 fresnels are 310x310 with an fl of 330 and 320mm, I have a 135mm triplet lense and a 15in Dell lcd , which was easy to strip.
My woodworking skills are not up to scratch but have managed to produce a respectable encloser and at moment working on framing/stiffing contraption for fresnels and focusing mechanism for lense.

Hi Traro,

I have opted out from buying the Southern Hospitality Mould simply because of the cost, it looks perfect but I can't justify the price really, Instead I'm trying the 350ml Ladle that they have so I'll report back on how that turns out, it should arrive tomorrow.

I was in touch with a bunch called Hollywood Fish Farm who stated that there are currently no official suppliers of E-Ballasts in NZ. I have heard another person say that they haven't been given a safety "tick"for use in NZ yet.
I've managed to get my hands on this bulb from a company called LampBrokers and its UV-P (protected) so no need for any special Lexan. Instead I have gone to my local glass shop and for $10 they have ordered me a cut to size piece of toughened glass in 4mm thickness- should be perfect. My Lenses have arrived after 4 day from the LL store so thats great service andI've bought a Fan Timer from MasterTrade for $34 to give me a 7 minute after shutdown fan on period. I've built a Haas style case with the only modifications being 2"of extra width and a different solution for spacing the fresnels which I'll work on today. I am still waiting to buy the last two pieces which will be the LCD probably a CMV 529a and the Ballast which I'm going to get from the switched on gardener for $140. I'm not going to mount it just have it like a huge power pack so it can hide in the corner somehwere.

I'll take some pics and post them up before long,

hi, id like to know how the ladel went. cheers smile.gif

Hi Dingle,

The Ladle is very polished and is near perfectly spherical. I'd give it a 7/10. It would be suitable for the EYE bulbs but it a bit small for the large tube shaped bulbs (250-275mm ones) I am able to use it with mine but I had to do some major cutting with the Dremel. The results are good though. My PJ is now finished bar some stain and clear coat so I'll get some result pics in a basic Plog up tomorrow or the next day.

350 mL ....whats that in mm diameter of the sphere the reflector makes ...id like to know if it will fit my bulb....rang the store and they wouldnt give me a 160mm bowl ($50) for free for my "science project" sad.gif .....so i think ill get the ladle
Lurch
At the front face it is ~110mm wide and it is ~50mm deep. It's made of some pretty tough stainless steel so if you are planning to cut it then you'll need a Dremel or small grinder.

hi Lurch.......

they are asking nz$150 for the same lamp, just rang mins ago, is that
what they charged you??? uhhhmmm very expensive..
Lurch
Nope definitely not!

I have the invoice right here and it was for $59 NZ + GST!!
$72 inc. and thats with freight!

Not sure what they're trying to do there... I did get the last one they had in stock, maybe their new suppliers cost more? Its a HUGE change in price though.
