Today was my daughter's birthday. I built a semi-new computer for her from old parts lying around. quick list:
----old parts----
Shuttle AK31v2 mobo
AMD 1800
geforce mx440
10/100ethernet card
60 gig 5400rpm hard drive (Maxtor)
---new parts---
case with 400 watt PS
Rosewill DVD Burner
512 meg pc2100 ram
It will power on, but the screen stays blank. It makes a 2 second beep, then pause, then 2 second beep...
How tough are mobo's and cpu's? When I went digging for the mobo and cpu, I found it out in our shed, in the static bag, in a box. My wife must have put it out there, after I upgraded my mobo and cpu 2 years ago.... I live in Texas, so it stayed in that shed through 2 summers of over 100 degrees. Could that have ruined it? It looks fine, just like it did when I took it out of my computer...Any advice would be greatly appreciated! Thanks!

Sounds like a jumper problem. Make sure the voltage, cpu and bus jumpers are properly set for your config. If you can't find your MB manual look online for it at the manufactures site.

can't remember the two second beep code. ITs a low level failure.
IS the Bios configured for the HD?
(no beep)
Keyboard OK (double beep once)
IS your memory in tight? ( longer beeps)
I'll ask my brother. he's a computer hardware Tech guy.

i would take everything out but the ram and cpu to see if it boots then try adding peripherals 1 by 1 till you find out your problem . last time i had this problem the onboard video card wasnt disabled and was a quick fix.

the bios wasnt configured for the hard drive... 1st I reset the 512 ram to dimm 4, and got it to boot, but would freeze on windows load, so I just reformatted, and wallah...everything's like new...thanks for the replies!

Try reseating your memory making sure it's in bank one. That's the BIOS beep code you're getting. I think you'd have a hard time finding jumpers on anything besides CMOS on newer mainboards.

Davehtr makes an excellent suggestion, and that's an excellent place to start diagnosing your problem.

i think theres something wrong with your ram. keep the old ram and take out the 512 chip and see if it works.

Your RAM is not compatible with your MB.
Try to find MB book to see what types and sizes are needed.
Olded MB need a matched pair of sticks.
Good Luck. But, your problem is definitly a RAM issue.
