I'm going to show off my PJ this weekend to a few people and have started making myself a demo dvd of my favorite scenes that I can just pop in and play.

Here's what I've got so far. I'm looking to show off picture and sound in these demos and a few favorites are thrown in too.

Matrix Reloaded - Highway chase
Fifth Element (of course) - Taxi chase
Van Hellsing - The first vampire attack in the town. I just love the special effects in this movie.
Star Trek First Contact - The borg space battle at the start of the movie
Blade 2 - Opening sequence has some really cool 6.1 effects
Star Wars Episode 2 - Obi-won versus Jango Fett
House on Haunted Hill - The roller coaster scene at the start
Sleepy Hollow - The scene where one of the town elders gets his head chopped off and it rolls between Johnny Depps legs. Pretty dark but it's just too funny.
Finding Nemo - two from this one. Nemo is going to school at the start and is ridding on the back of the teacher. Second is the Marlen, Dory shark scene. That shark is just scary at 100 inches!

That's it so far. I still want to take the Galamipus (sp?) scene from Jurassic Park and the ending of The Incredibles. Any additions would be helpful.

Take a look at the WMV HD content its mostly HD versions of IMAX movies that are high resolution with lots of color and detail.
WMV HD
It will require you to play off your computer but some of the stuff is simply increadable 1-3 minute trailers.
rogfa
LOL. Thanks but I posted a similar link a couple days ago but yes they are definitely on my list of show material.
rogfa
Well, my friend was very impressed with my PJ -- calling it "theatre quality" was a great compliment. I ended up creating a nice demo disc using a couple more movies along with the above. If anyone's interested I'll post a quick tutorial later. But in the mean time the software I used was DVD Shrink 3.2, TMPGEnc DVD Author 1.5 and DVD2AVI. The only pay software I used was TMPGEnc DVD Author the other two were free.

zroth
this is a good idea.

How about the saber battle with Darth Maul in Ep. 1 or the scene with Yoda getting busy in Ep 2?

The first episode in Animatrix is a big WOW type scene too. It shows off what CG is capable of for 5 years ago.
rogfa
I should add those too. Episode I had some amazing colors in that movie. I can't wait for Episode 3 to come out. Yoda versus the Emperor was awesome!

You didn't say if you were look for material to play on a DVD or HTPC. If HTPC look for HDTVpump its a codec that can be run in WMV, Zoomplayer etc.. that allows you to play HDTV streams (usually .ts or .tp) the HDTVpump website has links to some NASA/Shuttlle stuff that is pretty cool to really show the resolution of our PJs.

I have just watched the wmv hd version of terminator 2
t2 extreme

I'm not sure if anyone in LL is aware of this but on avsforum there is a program we participate in called the HT Demo Tree. Basically, using the Pay It Forward system, we get one or more discs from someone and in turn send it to three or more people out there for their enjoyment. The three new receivers then make copies for 3 or more and on and on.

The other system is to simply download all of the discs freely from a dedicated server. Should be no problem for many of you since most LL builders usually use a HTPC for source playback.

The owner of the server is avs member swithey, and on his server he has demo discs 1-16 available for dowload (yes, that's 16 unique demo dvds). All dvds are in dolby digital but at least one is dedicated dts-only.

Eventually, I'll be done with the final four and he'll have 20 demo dvds for anyone to test drive their HT. No more looking for the right track in a certain movie, just about every track from every action movie has been ripped, authored, and placed in an easy to use menu for your enjoyment.

Here is the tree itself:

Here is swithey's website:

Note: DTS #8, which is created by the dts corporation, is no longer available for download.

I just PMed Swithey to get access to his demo DVD collection. I plan on making torrents out of them, and can put the torrents up here with Brains or whoevers permission.

Since these are authorded DVDs and do NOT contain any real movies in whole (only trailers, snippets) I would assume that would be safe and not considered piracy/warez.

We do have permission of the author of the DVDs

Oh boy, where to start? So many reference DVDs so little time. biggrin.gif

Here's my little list in no particular order

The Matrix -

When Neo pulls up along side the building in the helicopter and just wastes everything. Also the lobby shoot-out is a classic for any HT buff and the shooting sequence between Neo and Smith in the subway.

The Matrix Reloaded -

When Neo is flying really fast to go save Trinity.

The Matrix Revolutions -

The end battle scene between Neo and Smith is truly astonishing on the ears and eyes. As well as the scene where the machines invade Zion, WOW.

Gladiator -

The begining battle scene in DTS is absolutely insane.

The Fifth Element (of course) -

When Leeloo is being chased in the begining, some great LF effects in the soundtrack. As well as the cab chase scene.

U-571 -

Simply put, the scene where the depth charges are being dropped is easily the most demanding scene on any subwoofer, it has frequencies that drop below 20hz.

Apollo 13 -

Another woofer cooker that goes below 20hz in the opening scene.

The Fast and the Furious -

The entire movie sounds simply amazing, especially if you have the DTS version.

Saving Private Ryan -

Need I say more?

Finding Nemo (of course) -

Truly some of the most amazing colors ever seen in any movie.

Final Destination 2 -

The opening freeway pile up sounds and looks amazing in DTS.

The Others -

Truly creepy sound in this movie, amazing.

The Hunted -

Looks and sounds great throughout the whole movie, especially the opening scene.

The Incredibles -

It's a Pixar film.

Jurassic Park III -

Movie looks and sounds awesome, especially during the scene that's like 15 mins into the movie where the T-Rex fights that huge Ultra T-Rex thing with the fin.

Lord of the Rings special edition -

The opening scene of the Fellowship, my personal choice of a DVD benchmark. The battle for Helm's deep and the sound of the Ent trees walking around and talking in The Two Towers is great. And in the Return of the King the scene where that huge light fires into the sky, also during the giant elephant scene, some great surround sound effects and LFEs. The picture in Return of the King imo is arguably better then the other two.

Monsters Inc. -

Great looking movie, almost as good as Nemo. Sulley's fur is quite impressive.

Star Wars Episode II: Attack of the Clones -

Opening scene when the ships are landing, great low frequency tester. Visually the scene where Anakin and Padme are frolicking in the grass and having a pic-nic is very impressive. Some other great scenes are also the fight between Yoda and Dooku and the huge Jedi battle at the arena.

Star Wars Episode III: Revenge of the Sith -

The opening scene is truly great, one of the best. (I'm seeing a trend with opening scenes tongue.gif) The battle between Yoda and Darth Sidius is awesome as well. The saber fight between Anakin and Obi-Wan is also another good one, and the chase scene between Obi-Wan and Grievous is also great.

The Mummy -

Excellent movie to test all around, especially the soundtrack and the sandwall scene.

Star Trek: Insurrection

Begining chase scene with Data is awesome.

Resident Evil -

Great looking and sounding, especially the opening song in the movie.

Armaggedon -

What can I say? This entire movie imo is truly reference quality.

Shrek 1 and 2 -

Amazing image quality, almost rivaling Nemo.

Tears of the Sun -

Disturbing movie, but the use of surround sound to create a "stealthy" feel to the movie is superb.

Terminator II: Ultimate Edition

720p and 1080p, nuff said.

Tomb Raider: Cradle Of Life

This looks and sounds astonishing, ending scene is great with the giant tree things.

Vertical Limit -

Excellent sound and picture. (and I just love this movie smile.gif)

Bad Boys II -

GREAT picture and sound, especially the huge freeway car chase scene.

Pirates of the Carribean -

Picture and sound are A+.

Stargate Ultimate Edition -

Really really good DVD. Excellent surround sound usage during the entering of the Stargate scene.

007: The World is Not Enough -

The opening scene is one of the best looking and sounding chase scenes ever. (another notable one is the car chase scene in The Bourne Identity)

Raising the Mammoth -

Such a great documentary, the picture and sound are great. (I know I know, it doesn't support DTS or DD but still sounds awesome)

The Patriot -

Awesome battle scenes, great use of directional audio during shoot-outs.

Jurassic Park 1 and 2 -

Both all around excellent, the soundtracks in these movies are great and so is the image quality.

Harry Potter and The Goblet of Fire -

Truly all around reference quality DVD.

The Cronicles of Narnia -

Great picture and DTS sound. (although this was the biggest cinematic let-down of all time for me sad.gif)

Final Fantasy: The Spirits Within -

Excellent DVD, one of my absolute favorites to test. The LFE's in the begining are amazing, it'll push your sub for sure. Also the landing scene where the troops shoot those guns and fall into that goo stuff, really awesome sounding. This is also one of the best looking movies ever made. (highly underrated film imo)

Thought of a few more -

Independence Day and War of the Worlds are also great DVDs to test.

King Kong -

How did I forget this DVD???? Amazing movie all around. Reference quality DVD, pretty damn amazing.

Well, seeing as I've run out of ways to compliment a DVD's sound a picture quality I'll stop there for now. I'll add more later as I think of them.

Nice Job!!! post-418-1138467278.gif

When you get time… I would love to see the guide as I would like to make one as well.

Great list, Blake!
May I suggest another movie that makes excellent use of 5.1?
The battle scenes in Master and Commander: The Far Side of the World really make you feel like you're in the middle of it.
