I stopped by the local glass shop to get the particulars on ordering tempered glass. They said that all they needed to know were the dimensions and thickness and they would order it. Asked about not having it marked tempered and they said no problem. Takes about 10 days to two weeks and OBTW the minimum is $27. Is this typical? How much have others paid?

My tempered glass was $16.50, I also ordered two peices of double strength non-tempered glass for the fresnels. It took them 3 days to get the tempered glass order in. However I didn't ask for it to not be stamped so it was. Hardly noticable.
The total order came out to be $23 and some change. I got my galss from a place called Okolona Glass. If I were you, I would get out the yellow and start calling glass and/or framing businesses and getting quotes. 12X10 is the size I got because it was just bigger than the fresnels and very easy to measure

I read in the guide that you are supposed to get your lense cut a 1/2" smaller (in height) than you box dimensions to allow for the cooling circuit. With the box dimensions that the guide gave, that means that the tempered glass would be a 1/8" thick and 10 1/2" X 15 1/8". Is this large enough to cover the fresnel lens and protect them?
Also, I called the local glass store and got a quote... $45!!! Is there a cheap and relatively quick place online to order tempered glass that anyone recommends?
mark8261
Jun 30 2004, 08:42 PM
Actually the glass would be around 9 3/4" x 13". The measurements in the guide are outside with 3/4" mdf. Inside measurements would be 10 1/4" x 13 5/8". Allow yourself some room on the sides of the glass as you will only need 12" of fov to get to the condenser fresnel. You want 1/2" space for air to pass under the fresnel for cooling.

My bad man. I forgot to subtract from the width and the guide confused me because it said to take only 3/4" off the overal dimensions, instead of 1 1/2" (from both sides). Anyway, any place online where I can get it cheap? Where did you folks get it for $15? Locally?

Well.... I tripped across something today while digging around for a cheap tempered glass solution.
Problems:
#1 -- Standard Sizes are 10"x10", 12"x12", 14"x14", and 16"x16" -- as we know Tempered Glass cannot be cut, and the plans call for a different size. But, check out
Toblerone's solution to using a piece of non-custom glass for isolation.
#2 -- Thickness is 3/16", a little thicker than the 1/8" spec'ed.
#3 -- You gotta by them 10 at a time.
Positives:
#1 -- Cost for the 10"x10" and 12"x12" is $2.20 per panel. ($22.00 for 10)
There may be other sources, (in fact, there are -- I did some more digging) perhaps even local ones. These panels are "standard" because they are used to construct "Glass Cube Shelves" for store displays.
Thought I would throw it out there, maybe Brain or someone can do a group buy and offer them one at a time in the store or something...
Link to the place I originally found them:
3/16" Glass Panels from The Fixture Zone -- Click HereDo a Google for "Glass Cube Shelves" and you will find a ton of other places.
Hope this helps on cutting down the materials cost for some people!

DrudgeMart - i have a piece of tempered glass cut to my specific size - i forget the measurements but its a rectangle -
onedayglass.com
does it -
One the other note it is possible to cut tempered glass with one of those cheap glass cutters - I have done this when I built my boa cage - its a pain in the butt, but it can be done - i had to score both sides of the glass and tap tap tap away - until it cracked -
just go to onedayglass.com and they will hook you up with any deminsion with no stamp.

Just found another source for tempered glass. Good idea, Drudge Mart, looking for fixture companies. They offer 10 x 12 which is just about perfect. Extremely cheap, too! They refer to the size taking into account connection intersections so I have emailed them to get actual size in relation to specified size.

Nice find -- was striking out on finding 10"x12" pre-fab tempered glass, and it's hard to beat $2.25 usd.
Let me know what the actual dimensions are when they get back to you, if they are undersized, maybe one of the larger ones will be close enough to make work.

http://www.makeyouhappy.com/store_fixture_glass.htmGood news and bad news. Glass is cheap, but shipping is $12 "crating" plus UPS. Comes to $21 or $22 dollars per shipment. Crating charge is the same for 1 or 100 so could get cheaper for bulk order. Don't know what I'll do yet

Same place I called asking about a "custom" piece and was told $18. Guess I can't blame them for trying to sell me what I asked for, but I think I will opt for saving $15, eh?

,wouldn't the narrower light path allow for a narrower and possibly precut piece of glass?

I just ran some tests on Lexan, and came to the conclusion that it works very well as a substitute for tempered glass.
It costs $4.73 for a 11"x14" piece at Home Depot. It has the advantage of being cuttable, and shields UV already.

Where in Home Depot did you find it? Also, how is it cut to size? Are there any disadvantages to using it? I ask only because since it is so much cheaper why hasn't everyone been getting Lexan from the start... Thanks for the help!

Obviously, Home Depots may vary in their organization. Ultimately, I had to ask someone in the window section, and they directed me to it.
At my Home Depot, it was in the back wall, between the lumber section and the screen doors. (The lumber section is broken into several subparts; it's the one with the pre-cut, pre-laminated pieces for building bookcases.)
They offered it in multiple pre-cut sizes. If they don't have your size, you can always cut it yourself with a jigsaw (get a blade rated for plastic). Don't bother with the knife cutting tool they recommend (and place near the display); it's too difficult.
People are worried about the plastic melting, catching on fire, yellowing over time, and... hmm, I think that about covers it. People don't have those gut concerns about tempered glass.
I don't believe we have those problems with XL-10 Lexan in this pj. The temperatures don't get hot enough, and the Lexan is treated for UV.
If I am reading the spec sheets correctly, Lexan XL-10 will catch fire if exposed to open flame at 873 degrees F, and will spontaneously combust if it reaches 1,076 degrees F. By that point, you've already shut down your projector and started crying because your LCD is toast.

I also like that it is 250 times stronger than annealed glass, while tempered glass is only 3-4 times stronger than annealed glass.

I used them,
http://www.onedayglass.com/tempered.html and recieved my 12.5x10 piece in less than week 4 buisness days I think .. I called them , and originally planned on sandwiching my lenses .. After some reading here , I don't believe I will .. Anyway , I will probably have 2 left over .. You'll probably see me post them up in the sale section here in the future .. I had good luck with them , but yes , you need to meet the 15 bux they want .. Suggestion : order some typical glass to put on the grooved edge of your fresnels ,( for easy cleaning) along with the tempered .. That should get you the min. order .. Sorry I don't remember the mesurements for those .. I bought those locally , at Ace ..

You'll want to have the regular glass the same size as the fresnels.. Good luck.

Make sure you call instead of trying the site , if you use them . You're better off , I found out the hard way ..

I finally ordered my tempered from www.abctarget.com--tempered glass link--
Tempered Glass--minimum order is 4 pieces, but for $23, so what. Will let you know how long it took to receive and the condition it came in. The cube display glass is definately the cheapest way to go compared to a glass shop. These are avail. in 10 x 12 which will work fine. kcglass.com has 10 x 10 and 12 x 12 in single pc quant., but thought the rect. profile would be less problematic. When I get my bulb situation straightened out, I'll be ready to begin.

I have a quick question... all you folks are ordering 12" x 10" tempered glass, but won't that block some of the light? To mount it you need to come in on the sides. Is the light field that wide by then, before it hits the first fresnel lens? I'm just thinking that the LCD is 12" x 9" viewable and I don't want to block light.

Ended up getting the size recommended by you Brain in Tempered glass, found a local place for $15 plus tax. This is probably one of the cheapest places that I have seen from all of your other posts. If there is enough interest maybe we could arrange a group buy and you could sell them at the LL store, Brain?
Also, the shop that I got them from ordered them from somebody else, so I'm assumming that we could get them even cheaper that that.
