Sorry for the cross post I didn't quite know where to put it.

Hi all,
I've been reading here since Jan and have everything I need to build my PJ. I've been looking at the future and making sure I have all my bases covered and I think I found a problem.

Right now I have a Benq 567 v2 and a Vdigi for input from my xbox, PC and dvd player.

I know in the future (this winter) I am going to have to upgrade my PC for 2 reasons. I want to make my computer a HTPC and I want to get the new Oblivion game comming out for my PC.

My problem is I was just looking at Tigerdirect and noticed all the new high end Video cards are Dvi output only. I see that I will have a prob being my Benq is a VGA input. Is there a converter that can be used to make a DVI go into a VGA or do I need to get another monitor? I would prob get the Benq 591 or the CMV with the DVI input.

Thanks
Lucas

hi,
DVI to VGA adapters are cheap (under 10 dollars)
but if you want to go the other way it gets expensive (like 300 dollars)

Interesting.

Do you loose some resoution in the adapter? OR should I just get the DVI monitor? OR does it not really make a diff on a 15" 1,024 x 768 monitor?

I am by no means an expert on this topic, but from what I have read, it depends on what type of DVI connection whether or not you can easily get VGA out of it. Some are totally digital while others also carry an analog signal. Some research on the different types of DVI connections would be a good idea before you buy.

I just answered your post in the HTPC section. here

quickie:
A FREE DVI--> VGA agapter will come with any new high end video card now-a-days.

Double post? I think I saw this one somewhere else..deja vu.

I tried to run my projector using the DVI output of the video card (My card has both so you can run dual monitors) using the adapter that came with the card (9800pro) and the monitor would flicker off and on.

I don't know if it's the adapter, or the fact that I run it through a 50 foot VGA cable...

So, I just have to switch cables on the back of my PC when ever I want to run the PJ. Kind of annoying, but it works well through the regular VGA output.

So I'm not sold on those DVI > VGA adapters.

All the adapter does is re-pin the DVI-I analog pins into a connection for a standard VGA cable. Perhaps the analog signal on the DVI connection is not as strong as the VGA, creating problems when used with a 50 ft cable ? or perhaps that the adapter introduces a small amount of interference itself, but only a problem when using a 50ft cable ? I use these adapters on 3 of my computers at home and all work fine, but i'm using just the 6ft cables with ferrites on both ends.

cheers,
gs
