I was wondering, how much distance and in what direction should a focusing mechanism for this porjector be able to travel?

You want to allow 2" of travel for the focus to cover just about every situation.If in doubt allow more.

2" is correct. You want it to be able to go 1" forward of the measured focal point, and 1" backwards.
