Hey everybody. It looks like i'm the first Aussie to have a plog (well from what i've seen so far). I've been crusing the forums for about a month now and have been trying to figure out a design that i can use. I've been sitting back waiting for Punisher to finish his but i cant wait no longer, so at the moment and due to lack of money, im going to just convert an old OHP.

Im going to replace the bulb with either a mercury vapor or metal halide. I already have the control gear required which i got for free off my girlfriends dad who is an electrician.

What i am trying to figure out is what size LCD I should get.
Here are the two cheapest options I have found so far.

15" BenQ FP567 v2 TFT Monitor Black or Silver $309

17inch BENQ MODEL FP737S-D TFT MONITOR Silver Black 16ms Response 450:1 $322

I know the 15 Benq FP567 v2 has no FCC probs but dont know about the 17inch BENQ MODEL FP737S-D. Does anybody know anything about it???

I'll supply some pics soon, just have to wait for my dad to bring the digital camera home tonight.

if you are going with the 17" it will probably be a while before the optics are straightened out if you want to build asap i would go with the 15"

From what I've read Alynchy, there are a few Aussies on this forum.

And for the LCD, I bought a 15 inch CMV-522 at Newegg for like ~170 (but i'm from USA, might be pricier to get one down under). I would definately recommend the 15inch LCD if you want to get started quickly as most of the Plogs here are from a 15 inch LCD (thus easier to find helpful hints for making the PJ, which I'm doing smile.gif )

Thanks so far guys. I was just wondering about the 17 inch one cos it is only $13 more than the 15. Well tonight i have been trying out the OHP with an old 486 laptop LCD. With the lights off it gives a fairly bright image. I then tried a 20000 - 23000 lumen bulb that i got for free to try, and the image was not as bright as the original bulb in the OHP.

Heres a few quick questions.

1) does not having the bulb (light source) in the correct focal point position for the fensel lense drematically reduce the light output???

2) As the LCD screen i am testing with is very old, are new screens more see through - you can see through them????

3) Does the Benq 567 v2 have good light throughput???

Sorry,Alynchy!!!!! biggrin.gif
Welcome to the sacred hallows of the LL forums!
I can tell you that I can see through my benq lcd,Like looking through dark sunglasses(very dark!)
As far as I can tell, the centre of the bulb should be at the focal point of the fres, in my testing,I still got an ok image moving the bulb up and down a bit.But I imagine there is a "sweet spot"!
Good luck,I will try to speed up a bit !:D
BTW:Laptop screens have been investigated before, and I think they were deemed to be not suitable for this use, that maybe giving you a lot of light loss.

Well the bulb in the OHP is a 250Watt bulb that creates its light within a 1cm*1cm area. The 400Watt bulb I am trying creates its light within a rectangle 8cm*2cm. It is also a frosted bulb.

Tell me if i'm wrong, but does that mean that the 400Watt bulb will only give something like half of what its rated lumen due to the fensel lense only using a small part of the light producing area???

Does all the light made by the whole bulb add up to its rated lumens, or does only a small part of it produce the rated lumen????

What I am thinking at the moment is that the first part of that last question is correct. It looks like the fensel lens only uses the light at its focal point meaning that it needs to have all the light in one area unlike the 400Watt bulb.

Reply............... this is where you tell me i'm an incomantant fool. biggrin.gif

Frosted??
No frotsted bulbs allowed.

Your arc(filliment?) size sounds huge.
Most MH 400 watt bulbs have a short arc of about 25mm long and 8mm wide. See the pictures in my plog for ref.

You want to get a good clear shot at the arc without any diffusing frosting in the way.

Yes the rated light is for the entire bulb in all directions. Using a portion of the arc can be partially made up for by moving the bulb a bit closer to the fres. and a reflector will help recapture a bit of the back light. side light is wasted but such is life.

Cheers,
Kirk

Well good news. I have just got a Benq 567s v2 from Ebay for $265. The only thing is that I cant do anything with it yet as I am waiting for my girlfriends dad to get some prices on a decent bulb. I think there are only 2 that he is looking at, one from osram and the other from sylvania. The osram one is rather large and is $50. The sylvania one is thin and is $90. The seem to have around the same lumen output. What do you guys recommend???
