Full Version: HTPC and Game Consoles

So after doing LOTS of reading, I've come to the conclusion that the only feasible way to output a console (I'm particularly thinking NES, SNES, Gamecube) through the HTPC onto the projector without delay or lag would be to get a software based TV tuner card, such as the PROLINK PV-TV304P as suggested by SIMJEDI.

What I'm wondering is whether anyone has any experience comparing such a card's display quality to that of a PVR-150, for example? I don't mind going with the Prolink, but I'm curious as to what the quality turns out like.

Also - I keep reading different things about enabling Live Preview on the PVR-150. Does anyone have a definitive answer as to whether this works or not? And if it does, will the card work with dScaler as a decoder, along with FFDshow and Zoom Player?

Thanks!

Yes I can attest that it works with all of the above. There is no delay using the pvr-150 with live preview enabled.

Disclaimer: I am the only one in this community that has successfully done this. Mr Blutarski hasnt tried yet but should soon. I dont know if I just happened to get lucky or if this will work for everyone. I have had one other person in another community say that this fix also worked for them. Just thought I would inform you of that.

Another option is to get a monitor with 2 inputs DVI and VGA, hook the HTPC to the DVI and then the X-Box or whatever to the VGA. not that I know much about it all, but this should work without any probs.

That's what I did.

CMV520D LCD. DVI and VGA inputs.

HTPC-->DVI (XGA mode)
XBOX-->N6-->VGA (1080i scaled down to XGA)

But I think most people who go the HTPC route usually dont have the N6 also. Although, I am very curious of the picture quality of a vdigi compared to the pvr150 route.

If anyone's sitting on the fence on which way to go for an analog TV tuner card....

I have the PVR-500MCE. Essentially the same hardware as the PVR-150MCE (owned by Dergrin). The IQ of recorded analog TV signals rivals that of my ReplayTV system. Very cool. Even if you don't use it to tune game consoles it's the nicest analog TV tuner hardware I've ever owned.

The V-digi in 480p mode will only show 720x480 res on the LCD.
As for the N6. ...I can keep using this box on any of my monitors. I've got some UXGA monitors that the N6 works great on. biggrin.gif
I've been using the N6 to output in 1280x1024 mode then xbox out in either 720p or 1080i mode. Very crisp in XBMC.

I haven't checked out that new Prolink model.. just make sure it accepts higher than 480p inputs.
