And now...the Fresnels come out of the bag! Yes, I actually kept them in the bags all this time. I didnt even take them out when I measured, but now its time to reveal them to the world...and the very curious eyes of my daughter ( "Whoa Dadddy! What IS that?")

Note the Saran wrap draped over the frame....

Saran wrap is everyones best friend when it comes to these babies. Not only do they protect the fresnels from grease, fingerprints and such, but if you leave the plastic on, you can even paint the frames with them installed.

Just paint, dry, rip off the saran wrap and you have fresh fresnels...!
( Just like Mom used to make...)

samuraijack
This is my very basic method of keeping the fresnels inside the frame. 1 tiny nail. With these, you should pre drill with a bit that is just SLIGHTLY smaller than the nail. If you pre drill, it will keep the slats from splitting

All done! Now all I have to do is align them and figure out the mount holes for the front and rear fresnel frames. To do this, I will use super complicated math... tongue.gif
Total inside height divided by half, and measure up from the bottom of the sled.
Then the frames at their midpoint which you can see marked on the side with a black dot called ALIGN Dot...

The center dot is very small and very light, but its a must if you want to do this right. With the saran wrap over the fresnel, look at it at about a 45 degree angle and you will be able to see the concentric rings of the fresnel. Follow the rings to the center and put a small, light dot in the center target. If you can, use a paper dot,or better yet, a binder ring, since there is a small chance that the ink will bleed through the saran into the acrylic of the fresnel itself. Keep in mind which way is up for the fresnel and remember that settling will occur as expansion and contraction take place. You want the lens resting comfortably on the bottom of the frame.

Yes, the big problem with this one is you have to get it very near the bulb arc. 2x2 inches isnt really very big so in order to get the entire cone, it has to be close.

Beautiful work, as always.

The saran wrap idea is brilliant, think of the dollar I could have saved on gloves! smile.gif Well, maybe more on the hassle of putting on the gloves every time I touched the lenses....

For the alignment mark on the fresnel, I presume that mark is for the collimator fresnel, since the field fresnel is more likely to be movable.

One word of advice to those reading this PLOG while collecting parts for their own projector: This is a VERY WISE thing to do, keeping the fresnels in their bag. These things are unreasonably hard to clean. You cannot use alcohol based solvents on them, (As with any acryllic) and the grooves are a real nightmare. They're extremely easy to scratch to boot. Take it from someone who learned the hard way. smile.gif

Well, it looks like you're one large step closer to puting some of that light up onto a screen. This is one projector that I'm really looking forward to seeing result from.

Edit: For the secure facility, sometimes it's amazing what you can and cannot bring into those. I'm a bit surprised that they didn't even ask about the saw, but then again...

Thanks SupraGuy!
Sometimes I really want to just rush forward and do it, but I also want to take lots of photos along the way. Im hoping someone will get some good stuff from it. Sometimes I feel like should actually be called a "PLOD" because it seems like Im just slowly plodding along....wink.gif

I took special care with the fresnels, and I DO have a good way to clean them. Formula 409 is an excellent degreaser and emulsifier. I used to clean a fresnel lens or two in my time, but for the life of me I cant remember if they were plastic or glass. I did it like so:

Take the dry lens, and place it grooves side up.
Spray liberally with 409, DO NOT let any part of it dry.
If you have a badger hair brush you can clean dust out of the cracks ( I used to use an old shaving brush for this.) DONT GRIND! Just lightly tickle it. (Quiet!, Stop Laughing.. tongue.gif )
Rinse with warm water from the tap, use the spray head if it looks like it could use it.
Follow up with a rinse of room temperature distilled water, wait a few minutes and then rinse again with distilled water.
Dry by inverting the fresnel so the grooves are down and supported on all four corners. I used to use 4 chopsticks stuck in a piece of shipping foam.

As a side note, I have been wondering if a record cleaning kit might do a good job, just with a different solvent....?

Oh and the mark is actually going to be on both of the fresnel saran wraps so I can get a good lineup before I start adjusting. I like the saran wrap since its cheap, and you COULD project through it in the short term, just in case. I have a slug of lexanXL10 that has protective coatings on each side. I think it would be really neat if BrainChild could have the fresnels manufactured and then sealed with those. Just play with it, frame it, line it up and then strip that little sheet off and you have virgin fresnels...

...Yes, I dream in simple terms laugh.gif

Hi Samurai, good to see some progress! I'm currently sourcing some IR glass that's 125mm square (about 5"). It's expensive at $135 AU (includes delivery) but it should save a lot of heat related headaches. They questioned it's ability to survive at only 20mm from the bulb, but I can stretch that to 50mm now that my design has evolved slightly. They seem to think that will be OK. It's classed as a dichroic filter based on borosilicate glass and is mainly used in stage/set lighting I believe.

If you're chasing a larger piece try Rosco It's their Australian branch that I'm getting mine through.

Keep up the good work biggrin.gif
DAZZZLA
You can tile these Dichroic mirrors, so stacking 4 of these will give you a 4x4 inch piece. There will be some light scattering but nothing to extreme.

DJ
samuraijack
I looked into it, but I figured I could do the same effect with one. Im trying to keep the costs down to keep it within reach. I mean a few hundred dollars more and I could buy a used commercial PJ... wacko.gif
samuraijack
Just a quick shot of the box and sled...I spent a little time working on the targeting last night...everythings going to line up with a theoretical axis...

as suggested by SupraGuy, the target will most likely fall to the point between the two fresnel centers. In looking and reading I figure the most critical point of the LCD array is the alignment of the fresnels. The alignment will be done before the front fresnel is released to gravity. I might not even keystone yet. with the way my living room is set up, I think Im only looking at about three degrees, which I cam make up for by pulling the bottom of the screen back...Or maybe a set keystone and a small pullback.

Im also looking into small screw standoffs. It seems a shame to waste the ones I have though...

BioStar M7IVP Pro, Socket A, Serves me right, I got it for cheap...
Biostars are great for occasional use and the standard user, but I leave mine on 24/7 since it controls the lights ...

Gotta make a decision soon, Im getting shaky from withdrawl... ohmy.gif
samuraijack
Well, since I am running a 3000 processor, I had better replace it with a 3000 just in case. So tonights experiemnt will be to extract the chip from the dead motherboard and see if it made it by placing it in the rig that has been designated for the media player, a SEMPY2200 called "Thalia". If the CPU is fried then the Sempy goes back in and I get a replacement 3G and MB ( Probably an Asus A7N8x-E Deluxe, or an EPoX 8RDA+ Pro, havent decided yet). If Thalia takes the 3g, then Im homefree to try another processor...smile.gif

Can you say "upgrade"?

Uhmmm, yeah....I thought you could....
SupraGuy
The ASUS A7N8X-E-Dx is a very nice mobo. I have 2 of them. It's getting hard to find, though. sad.gif The wholesalers that I deal with aren't stocking them anymore. The onboard Silicon Image RAID controller is a nice touch. I also like the nForce chipset.

Don't let the withdrawl symptoms get you down.

One thing, though, if you're running Windows XP on there, be prepared to have to reinstall, or at least do a repair install on that drive. sad.gif Windows XP doesn't like being transplanted across motherboards much.

Oh yeah. Im prepared for it. I just ordered the new MB an EPoX 8RDA+ Pro Model with a cpu. I have always gotten along well with EPoX. The last EPoX board I had stood by me for three years while I ran it mercilessly each day. If the heatsink clamp hadnt broken off the main spline from three years of pressure, I might still be running it. I think I changed CPU's at least 4 times in that one. It was a rock solid board, but it tried to save the cpu when the heatsink came off and popped three of its caps. Still didnt save the cpu, but it was a damn good try.
As it was it saved the memory and all the peripherals... biggrin.gif

It is always preferrable (and easier) to run the XP IDE fix before you shut down the old m/b but it is possible to do it afterwards using a P.E. like Bart's and the registry editor plugin.

Well, in a fit of "Damn I need to kill something...", I started working on a box so I could fire up a little Diablo or something. My multimedia server didnt like the 3K processor and just sat their dumbly while the drives spun. Too bad.

So Im working on a POC matsonic board I got for nothing and found out that the previous guy had underclocked it. It read as an 1100 Athlon, but the spec class said it was an XP....?! So I ran the numbers and changed the FSB and Lo and behold it was an XP1700+!. Cool! So I finally got a little Diablo under my belt and slept a little better. Even if I couldnt get the onboard video to release itself...

Meanwhile my Multimedia server main drive decided it was time to die and wrote 243 bad sectors through the first sections of the drive. Man, I seem to be killing everything I touch. Im afraid to go to the bathroom... ph34r.gif

MB should be here on Wednesday. Once I settle the fight between the ATI and the Nforce chipset, I should be back on line.

Although it pains me to do so, I have halted the PJ project. I want to keep the record clean and with current pictures...

It never rains does it....

In an effort to get a customer's PC up and running a few months ago, I upgraded my work PC with a new m/b and swapped my old one into his as it was exactly the same. As my PC had been together for about a year I decided to do a complete reinstall and start with a fresh 200GB SATA and relegate my old 80GB SATA to backup duties. 4 weeks later the 'old' (1yr!) 80GB packs it in - no warning, can't even be seen in BIOS and now it rattles, much more than it should! Pure luck that I swapped it out before it died, but now I think I'll put in a yearly rotational policy on the HDD's regardless.

If you can get a BIOS reading, and need to recover bad sector data, then check out Spinrite. I have seen it save many PC's HDD's. The site is generally a wealth of information and I can highly reccomend a read.

Spinrite seems to be pretty good, but it does not work on NTFS partitions. I use HD Regenerator by Dimitri Prolichekov. Its OS agnostic, so it doesnt care what OS is on there. wink.gif

On the good side, my wife has reaffirmed my faith in her by merely stating it was "Fine, if you want to go get another one"...

EDIT: Just checked GRC.com. Its about time they started supporting NTFS. I might just have to get a copy and see how it does.

Yep, they're both pretty useful tools.

I got the last two pieces of the projector puzzle ordered today, the hot-mirror and the reflector. I've enlarged the reflector to 60mm radius since my last post and i'm getting 2 made from 2mm aluminium. The hot mirror is 125mm square so I should be able to put it about 50mm from the bulb.

I've got to research mirror coatings for the aluminium. I'll probably just polish one up and see if I can get the second one coated, that way I can see if there's any difference.

I was told today that stainless steel, even when highly polished, is less than an ideal reflector. I'll have to do a bit of research to see why this is so, if indeed it is.

already got it! I carry an arsenal of tools with me for "just such an occasion". I usually fall back on Hiren's CD just because of sheer familiarity.

FYI; Im writing this on my media server, who has been resurrected with a new primary drive. Now Im just waiting for the parts for my game/main rig.

Back to the PJ time soon! laugh.gif

So here I am expecting a package from FEDEX. My last package they delivered right to my door and left it there because I had the release on file ( Mind you I have filled out releases no less than 15 times since I have lived here...)

So I come home, expecting a package and lo and behold, they left me another release form...

Sigh...

They have the speed, they have the resources, so why cant they get this one little FREAKIN detail right?

Sears dropped a friggin tractor off at my house, assembled it, gased it up and cleaned up the mess. Did I need a form? No!

UPS delivered my package yesterday with no problem. They left it in the rain, but at least I got it.

Called corporate HQ and got a lovely sounding polynesian gentleman who obviously didnt understand a word I was saying...

Argh! I could see, even be gracious, if it was due to the hurricane or some other thing, but the fact remains that I have filled out the release so many times I know the layout by heart and they still cant seem to file it.
I just....I want ....I mean.... (POOOOSHHHHH!!!!)

Well now they have done it...My head exploded....wink.gif

EDIT: The only thing I can think of when I read this is that scene from "Spaceballs" when the president gets beamed in and asks why nobody told him his ass was that big...

Okay. Some heavy play on the X-box and a little calming down and things look better.

Sorry about the post above. I usually dont get like that but this problem has been several years in the making...Im usually quite tolerant of little things like this but when they filled out the release card they also put in the business name I have at the house and that WASNT on the package I ordered...so they obviously know who I am...Hmmmmmm.

Parts will be delivered today and I am taking tomorrow off! smile.gif

There a chance I will get detailed to New Orleans, so I have to play while I can. If I do go, I will be on a 16/8 schedule....but I would rather be helping than needing help...

My motherboard's here
Time to make it happen is
within my sad grasp...

My MB arrived today. Pristine and new and it smells like a chinese factory line... Uhmmm it is a sight to behold. The crisp purple of the standoffs is matched only by the precision of the traces.
...and the caps..
...well they are SOOOOOO far away from the CPU mount, that I think they could never affect it...

These boards are made with love....
You should check them out...

( BTW: My friend Mikey has a MB made by this company. He has passed it to his son. It has a 500x2 chip on it and has never failed him.

Nope, not nearly enough. Just in an exceptionally good mood since I have today off and today is also my Tenth Anniversary for me and my wife. Sometimes I get in a silly mood when Im feeling exceptionally well.

Okay...A fun weekend with getting mom back to FL and shutting up the camp, dragging 7 boxes of clothes to a Salvation Army drop off point for Katrina victims, etc...

Back to relevant things...The CPU that came with my MB was a 400Mhz FSb, so just for fun I placed it on my old MB. It worked!. It didnt recognize it for what it was, but it still came up and ran stable. So I still have to replace the MB to get my full FSB, but at least I didnt loose the MB. So now I can use that one in the HTPC for the PJ. All I need to do is get a 3G/333 Proc and install it on the wifes machine, take her 2700 and install it on that board and remove the semperon MB from the HTPC. I guess my oldest will get a better CPU out of the deal. Its either that or I will upgrade the file server for the lan...

Spent a little while studying the Nvidia Nforce2 chipset problem and the ATI 96/9800 series. Looks like a slight voltage mod may be in order along with rigorous adherance to installing drivers in the proper order...wink.gif

As for the PJ...
A slight accident coated the bottom of the my main frame with a subtle "coffee" colored stain. Since the frame was standing up, Im not going to worry too much. Tonight I will bleach with 5% and then do a light sand tomorrow.
If not, I will dip the whole thing to even it out...smile.gif

PICS coming and construction resuming as soon as I get the New MB situated...

Hahahahaaa! That is a REALLY good one! You have the Knack!

Here's one for your PLOG...

Gonna try to patch MB's tonight...
samuraijack
Okay, so I patch up the system and swap motherboards. Everything seems to go swimmingly. I was interrupted several times during the process, but I still have only myself to blame. I forgot to plug the fan lead from the CPU cooler in...I daisy chained it with the others, but I forgot to plug the chain in...

I started up and decided to do a repair install and after it mounted the drive the machine shut off...Thermal Protection circuit is tripped.
During this time I had to leave to shoo a child out of the bathroom. I come back and the machine is off.
Hmmmpfhhh, I say to myself and start the machine. It starts up and I start an install...Then it shuts down.

Getting the awful feeling I missed something I place my hand on the heat sink only to snatch it away. Damn!
The next few seconds are me frantically trying to trace the chain to the board and simultaneously move my fan so it starts venting the open case...12 seconds later I am started again and have confirmed airflow in the CPU cooler and upper vent. I stay in BIOS mode to watch the temp drop, cursing my distracted brain all the while...

The MB stabilizes at room temp plus 10 and Im happier. I check the BIOS and all is well.

So I boot and die...nothing..
So I boot with the windows cd and it comes up shiny, except for when I go for the install and it discovers my main drive as something it is not. I ask for a complete install and it tells me that the drive has "one or more errors that could not be repaired".

Right now I have the Winternals Disk Commander running ( even Spinrite wouldnt accept the drive..). I will settle for any of the three partitions that were there before.

Sigh...
ozstang65
I had a drive here in the shop yesterday that wouldn't boot. Thought it might be a bad sector so tried spin-rite, but it said there was an inconsistency between the bios and the partition size (or something like that, i don't recall exactly what it said). It STRONGLY recommended that this be fixed prior to running SR.

My plan all along was to swap the data to a new HD, but if there are any bad sectors Ghost spits the dummy so I usually run SR first. Anywho, I just ghosted the drive and all was good, go figure blink.gif

spin rite on the drive
makes dead computers alive
oh sh1t its just fried

Hehe. good one.

Report from home says the DC program has found two logical partitions and seems to think it found the lost C partition. The corrupt sesction ballooned to 135 GB from 100 so Im thinking it may have blown up and consumed the slack from the other logical drives. Gonna bring home some disks and do a sector by sector repair on it and see if I can handcraft another MBR... wink.gif
samuraijack
Well, even the better versions of our forensic software cant seem to save the partitions, so I am now at a crossroads.
I can either try to get back a few things by attempting a salvage and I might get 100 GB or so, of data back or I can just swallow, format and try to forget everything I have lost...

Either way I have lost my C drive which had all of my notes and such for the projector. Thank goodness I decided to post in detail to this PLOG, otherwise I would have very little to reference.

I guess I will try to work a little on the PJ and just take some pictures. I can always post when Im back up and running.
samuraijack
Well, I bit the hook and ordered a 300 GB 16MB cache, 7200RPM drive to salvage my files to. Looks like I have recovered some of the partitions information, so now its just a question on mounting the drive, making new partitions and copying the salvaged files. The file search itself will be the longest process. It probably wont be done til tomorrow.

Wish me luck! wink.gif
ozstang65
Hi Samurai, having 'been there, done that' I realise how long that can take. Hopefully you can recover everything. I found a data recovery program a bit over a year ago called Restorer2000. I've been able to recover a couple of accidental formats/inaccessible drives with this one.

On a PJ note, I installed my hot-mirror the other day, it dropped the surface temp of the dividing polycarbonate from 100°C to 60°C (no cooling fans)

Thats Excellent! I figure my ir filter will enable me to run without active cooling for the lcd, which is what I was hoping for. Im really chomping at the bit to start agian, but I promised myself I would document and take pictures and hopefully show the whole process from start to finish.

This recovery is a little touchy since it was the result of two failed mountings by winxp setup...Fortunately a buddy in Investigations lab let me borrow one of their special programs. Quite frankly I will be happy if I just get back my media drive...

If all goes well, I will be back to my usual ranting posts by the end of the week... laugh.gif

Did I mention that we packed up seven boxes of very nice clothes, good serviceable, etc, for the Salvation Army and were turned away saying "They only want NEW clothes?" WTF?

When I was young "beggars cant be choosers" actually meant something...geeeeshhh...

That's just ridiculous. I can understand why they wouldn't take undergarments and the like, but everything else? I'm sure there are some people in the South who might beg to differ.

I hope you can find another charity who'll accept them. Otherwise, label the boxes as "vintage," sell 'em for five times what you paid to begin with, and donate that to the Red Cross.
