Hey Everyone,

Well I’ve been very busy with work, but I did manage to get this thing together… Finally! This is using the Samsung LTN1565 LCD TV panel. The box design it a little bit different then the simple projector design. (I’ll get some pictures up once it is all together) I’m waiting on the tempered glass to come in, so I can only keep the projector on about 20 minutes before it hits around 105 degrees and I have to turn it off. (Although it doesn’t get over 120 @ 4 inches away from the bulb.. gotta love dual 120mm fans wink.gif ) If you look closely in the picture with me standing in it vs. the laptop picture you will see on the corners that the LCD is not centered and well... it isn’t. I used some tape and wood blocks just for this first test. Not bad though, I was very impressed with the results!

One other one...

hi batlin,

looks great for your trial run. i have been waiting to see a projector
with the lcd tvs. seems like a nice way to go, with all the input choices
and not having to use a computer. can' wait to see more. all the best, tony.

Very Nice!

Awesome!!

Whats the current size of your 4:3 projected image (diagonal of course)?
What about 16:9?

Looks great... How much can you tell in the screendoor of the pixels?
Eyebath
Great results batlin, congrats! biggrin.gif
batlin
Thanks smile.gif

I didn't mark off the 16:9 so I'm not sure of the size. The 4:3 was right about at 10.5 feet or 126 inches. The projectors lens was about 10-11 feet from the wall.

I actually didn't see any screen door at all. The fresnels are framed with a wooden frame and a 1" cut out on the bottom. They are about 5mm apart; the LCD in this test was about 10-15mm in front of the fresnels.
I found the best way to cut the lens hole was to set everything up (minus the LCD) and find the focus point. Then mark that as the center for the hole saw. I was leery of cutting the lens hole because I'm using the same idea a few others are using with the drawer idea and didn't want to have to make that over again from a bad lens hole.

My box design got a little screwed by 1000bulbs... I ended up canceling the potted ballast order after waiting over 2 months just on that one part! I found a replacement on eBay, but it turned out to be 1/2" too wide to fit in the electronics area. So let's just say this beast is going to weigh somewhere in the neighborhood of 70-90pounds... lol It was only going to have one extra area, but now has two and MDF is very heavy. I'll get some pictures up sometime soon.

Batlin
You should try moving mine. 50" high, 30" deep, and 24" wide. It needed 3 sheets of MDF to complete. Now I just need to bring a crane in to move it around.
Jones Rush
What is the horizontal line which can be seen at the lower area of the screen ?.
batlin
mark8261 --> Lol 3 sheets! Yikes! wink.gif

Jones Rush--> The line is chair bumper molding. (I was in the kitchen)

To show off the Colors, Man! tongue.gif Personally I plan to use Tron as a Theater Demo, great colors, and great contrast demo (bold colors and dark blacks all in the same frame).

Way to go Batlin
Nore
That image is perfect, really hope mine turns out as good
Norlander
Hi Batlin,

Looking very good! I am thinking of using this LCD or the LTM1555.

Did you find a good price on your LCD?

Cheers,
Norlander
batlin
Norlander,
I bought mine @ AV Deal Depot

He raised the price twice since I ordered from him. I bought mine for around 540-ish shipping included. His eBay auctions might be less.

modest911--> I''ll take some more pictures as soon as the seperation glass comes in. (Should be middle to end of this week smile.gif )
Norlander
Thanks Batlin,

I will check them out.

Cheers,
Lee

I went to pricewatch.com and found one store selling the LTN1565 [not the 1555], and the pricewatch price was $517 after shipping. If you browse the store and find it, it was like $650, so you need to follow the link off pricewatch to get the advertized price.

Well I've started to build another box, rather then build another case around the ballast. I'm also building a light engine box, but i think I have a different bulb then most you guys. Is the Eye bulb everyone is using close to 11" or maybe even 11.5" long?? (Because mine is unsure.gif lol...)
I should be getting the engine done this weekend, and the box sometime in the next two weeks or so. *Waiting on quite Fans* The glass, DC power supply and speaker carpet are coming in today. I'll keep everyone posted. wink.gif

EYE lamp we're using is about 8" long.
batlin
oops! lol The lamp I have is over 11" long, but it is the same type... weird. Oh well already have the frame built for the lightbox. Maybe 1000bulbs messed up the order once again. (i wouldn't doubt it) Although it works great blink.gif
batlin
Ya, they screwed it up...
I just checked on the site and it looks like they sent me either " M400X/U (EYE) " or " M400SX/BT37/HOR (EYE) " instead of " M400SX/BT28/HOR (EYE) ". It looks like they will all work horizontal mounted, but the length is increased and the lumens are slightly decreased on the universal mount bulb. That company is sooo lame...

Get a refund. Get one from Lamps. It's a pain but you shouldn't get stuck with something you didn't order.

Man, Batlin, I'm in the same boat. When I opened the box w/ my EYE bulb in it, it was a freakin' whopper. Darn now 11 1/2". I ordered the M400SX/BT28/HOR (EYE) from 1000 bulbs and that's what I got. I saw on the forums about a low profile or something, maybe that's what I should have got. I did see though that the EYE specs. say that its 8" not including the little threaded metal base part.

Somebody set me straight, please. I'm confused sad.gif blink.gif
lamps
Yes about 8" from top of lamp to silver part. If you have the wrong one send it back and get a refund. I have the lamp we need sitting right here waiting for a new home.

On the neck of the lamp it will say M400 SX/HOR/BT28 If it says something else you have the wrong one.
joecnc2006
Here is the bulb im using....

Lamp Type - Metal Halide; Watts - 400; Bulb - ED-28; Base - Mogul; Color - Clear; ANSI Code/Ballast - M59; Operating Position - Universal; Application - Enclosed Luminaires; M.O.L. (in) - 8 5/16; Avg Life (hrs) - 12000; Initial Lumens - 36000
mccamp82
Joe2000chevy,

is that THIS bulb? If it is, that is the same one i just ordered. I love that it is so small, and just as bright as the others. Take care.
msk1hc
I would be more concerned that the 12,000 hour life is half of what it was supposed to be, rather than its size needing to be taken into account. . .
joecnc2006
LOL do you know that 12,000 hrs is 500 days if running 24/7 or 1.40 years?

I think at $14.00 US and availably locally here is well worth it to get a smaller bulb with the same specs.

yea 14.00 a year is not bad at all...

Look at BrainChilds post he said that mounting the bulb horz. will yeald better results and that what i wanted to do with this smaller bulb.

Joe
joecnc2006
mccamp82, yes seemd to be the exact same bulb except ur specs say 20,000 hrs.... only time will tell but they are 1/3 the cost of the eye bulb and work just as well.

I may just replace the bulb every 3 months for $14.00 just for the heck of it just to have new and bightest bulb.

Actually not quite as well. Look at the mean lumens. This is why I specify the EYE lamp. You'll be surprised at how fast you'll hit the 'mean' lumen output.
batlin
Well I'd try to get a refund, but I've already started with the 11.5" bulb. It looks like the one i ordered is the same as BirdMan[SS]. The "M400SX/BT28/HOR (EYE)"... I think somebody at 1000bulbs is pulling the wrong bulb. It even says on the description around 8" in length. No biggie though, I'll just have a few inches wider box. I'd send it back if I hadn't started building the new box. *sigh*... That company is so bass aackwards.
joecnc2006
BrainChild,

The mean lumen for my bulb (Shown above) is 24,000 which is the same as the large 12"

are you saying it might not be enought??

Man Batlin that sucks. I'm gonna try and get another before I start designing. Oh well just another setback but atleast I caught it.

Joe

The mean lumens on the EYE BT28 is 30,000 and the starting lumens are close to 40,000. It is a premium high output lamp. Within a few hundred hours the lamps will be getting close to their mean, and your lamp will be producing six thousand less lumens. In my opinion that's a lot of light lost.

I would suggest you keep using the lamp you have and upgrade a little later.
jeremyvnc
I was just wondering... How do the lamps go out?? Does the metal inside just get burnt up and that's it?

OK i will prob. get everything setup with this bulb and then get the eye bulb.... i can do all the testing and setup with the lesser bulb right? alighnments should not change any.

Joe
jeremyvnc
Everything should be the same, unless the length of the bulb is different. cool.gif
brainchild
Lamps burn out because: Consumption of the metal halide salts in the arc tube. Gas pressure inside the quartz tube may decrease. Contaminates during manufacturing take their toll over time.
jeremyvnc
Wow, that sucks... Thanks for the info Brainchild...
mark8261
And if the lamp lasted forever where would the money to be made in that. tongue.gif
jeremyvnc
Yeah, actually when I went to Sylvannia when I worked as an electrician, they told me that they actually use overhead lamps last about 15 years to go out with continuous use and that they aren't on the market, sylvannia just makes them only for testing in their own buildings. They were bright too!!

I wish I could have one of those... Never have to change the bulb... That's cool!!
batlin
lol 15 years! I wish i could get my hands on a 131,000+ hour bulb wink.gif

No kidding, after thinking about it though, the bulbs migh last 15 years but turning them on and off is what decreases the life so much.
