just wondering is i could use Xenon HID lights from my car for this project. HID's produce way more light than halogens, and have longer life as well. plus it's a cooler color.. lemme know your opinions. excuse me if this has already been covered. thank you in advance.

Reasons not to use automotive over industrial HID
1. Luminous output is too low for HID headlights.
2. You wouldn't be able to project a very large image.
3. You'd end up spending more for automotive HID than industrial.
4. You'd have to run off 12VDC instead of AC mains.
5. Choices of spectral qualities and lamp styles isn't as broad as industrial.
Why are you considering automotive HID? Is it the form factor?

Short answer no and it has

Just use the recommended lights, don't go reinventing the wheel

Do your reading

Halogens aren't recommended - LL uses an HID lamp, a metal halide with excellent color rendering. I believe it's quite a bit more powerful than your average car headlight, and it lasts 20,000 hours.

Yea, most of the higher-powered car headlights last 50-200 hours or so.

Squalish, I think it is you that needs to do their reading.
chigga was talking about an automotive Xenon HID lamp, not a halogen. Its an arc lamp like a MH, and needs a ballast etc.
They are the slightly blue tinted lamps you see on expensive executive cars.

He's extolling the virtues of HID(as a new idea) vs halogen, read the second sentence.
I'm well aware that there are xenon lamps out there - hell, xenon (In another, high pressure/short arc/high wattage form) is the preferred tech for movie projectors, as far as I can tell. But the metal halide lamps that we use are superior to car headlight xenons.

Sorry, didnt mean to be rude!
I thought he was comparing Xenon headlamps to the usual MH bulb used in the project, which they are unsuitable for mainly because of cost and low output.
Now Im sure I read somewhere of a consumer projector made by Sony (I think) using a proper Xenon lamp. That would be such a sweet projector.... [drools]
