Full Version: What would be the best cable for 25'

I'm going to mount my pj in the ceiling...eventually.

What would be the best way to get the signal to the pj with about 25' of cable?

I have the ADS upconverter and will be getting the v-digi. Should I run the component cables to the pj, and mount the v-digi in the pj, or run a VGA cable to the pj from the v-digi in the a/v closet?

TIA

Personally i recommend using longer lengths of vga cable (svga to be exact wink.gif) for two reasons.

- Quality long length svga cable costs much less than a quality rgb cable.
- Decent svga cable can easily handle 25' lengths with little or no signal degradation.

I bought a 15' svga cable here for a song. The cable works perfectly and much thicker than the stock cable i got with my lcd. I also picked up this 15' DVI cable just to experiment with since it was so cheap. Turns out it also works perfectly with no sparklies or other visual anomolies...i probably won't need to pick up a better one. I plan on leaving both cables hooked up to my PJ.

I just got
25' of SVGA (D-sub 15 dual male)
and
5 meters ~ 16.4 Ft of DVI (dual male) cable.

from mwave I haven't yet tested out the cables. I'm in the middle of a massive computer cleaning, plumbing & migration... plus I picked up my materials for the PJ today. *uggh*

Just a question about monitor cables. I have noticed that these come in vga, svga, xga, sxga and etc. Having a native xga monitor would we not need to invest in at least xga monitor cables or will the svga do just fine. I thought all vga cables were the same, but when I was looking at a site

http://www.cablestogo.com

I found out that I was misinformed. Things never seem to be straightforward. blink.gif

Also, would an extension be okay or would a complete new cable be the best. I probably already know the answer but I putting it out there anyway.

I think there's a way to make an VGA cable out of Cat5. check the boards.

OMG imagine how awful the image would look over a CAT5 cable. I've had 6' shielded VGA cables that transmitted bad images.

Here is a link to a page showing the pinouts for a VGA cable. He made a VGA to component breakout cable. My first thought was you're going to be 7 wires short from the 8 in Cat5 to the 15 with VGA but only 8 are used in this case. If you're using STP over UTP, you shouldn't experience much signal loss. However price is an issue. You can find quality VGA cable for about the price it would take you to make these plus save your time.

I would stay away from the "svga" cables @ cablestogo. They don't have ferrite cores on the ends and the cable looks real thin. If you're going to stay under 25' lengths then most decent cables with good thickness and ferrites ought to work fine. As i mentioned above, I bought 15' svga cables from monoprice.com, they're thick, have ferrites, and work as good or better than my stock lcd cables. You an also hit up newegg for svga cables as the user-reviews there seem pretty consistent (they look identical to monoprice vga cables). Don't let the pics fool you, the end connectors are big and bulky, making the cable itself appear thin.

Last night I was thinking a bit more about MadCraiZ's suggestion.

I thought it would be nifty to build the patch (only for RCA cables) using the existing RJ-45 connectors.

get 2 RJ-45 feamale terminals, and solder the red, white & yellow RCA ports to the pair of recepticles. Then you could use a standard CAT5 with RJ45 terminated ends as a patch chord. Neato!

lots of people have that hardware laying around (I don't). it would be neat to try and dirtbag cheap.

don't even need the rj45 terminals if you're working with a spool of cat5. Some decent cat5 is great stuff...used it to jerry-rig new cables for phones, radios, and antennas when sombody decided to mess up mission critical equipment in the field.

wonder if it's good enough quality for component connections as well. too bad you'd need an extra line to get all both audio channels.

I am using a $13 - 50 foot SVGA cable from monoPrice.com and it works like a champ. No difference in picture using it vs. a standard 6 foot cable.

Highly recommend.

Thanks Agent,
You can hardly buy the connnectors for that price. What resolution are you using with the cable? smile.gif

Uhmmm..... Just a guess, but 1024x768? biggrin.gif

Nice to hear that their 50' vga cable works without a hitch. I purposely bought the shortest minimum (15') because i was leery of poor signal quality.

I was too... but I said, "Heck, for 13 bucks, it's worth the gamble!"

It wasn't a gamble. It's just as someone else recommended to me. Works great! No, it's not a "monster cable" if you catch the pun, but it does the job well none the less.

Right now, I don't need 50 foot. 25 would be more than enough, but I will eventually have a ceiling mount (or embedded into the ceiling) projector and will need the length. And it's already in hand and tested. smile.gif
