Try adding more weight on the bottom of the screen. This should pull the canvas tighter.

Someone in AVSforum mentioned a more expensive, thicker blackout cloth that they bought which was resistant to wrinkles.

BO can be tensioned to fix wrinkles, but that takes away its retractability.

Creases are another matter - I would probably try putting it under some weight for a period of time.

I've been thinking about ironing or steaming my screen material. Is this a bad idea?

I would suggest steaming/ironing it through a towel or something. I think that blackout cloth is rubberized material...rubber and irons don't mix.

Painting it will get rid of them, as the paint dries it will tighten it. IMO you should at least paint the screen with a flat white paint as this will greatly improve the reflectability of it. While stretching the BO it will get rid of all but the most stubborn wrinkels, painting will cure the rest.

edit: Oops, sorry just noticed you are making a retractable screen.
