Hey, I have a friend in the billboard sign business. I was thinking of taking one of his old,white vinyls (I'm pretty sure it's 10x30) and cut it to size for my screen. whatcha think?

Does anyone have any information on painting a white vinyl blackout screen with a clear lacquer paint coat?
This is supposed to add to the reflectivity and give it a pearlesent sheen.

I'm not in a position to test it out myself, just thought I would mention the idea to see if anyone has tried it on an extra patch of blackout cloth.

I think you would be better getting something flatter without all changing surface of blackout cloth (if you want cheap, maybe carboard etc).

Hello I'm getting my Projector this weekend how well does this material work on a epson or viewsonic projector ?

Here in India Blackout cloth is not known by the cloth retailers here,they think in terms of Black Cloth and just forget the Out of Black!!!
But Looking at other materials ,like most Indian DIYs like Rajesh and others have used ,I too decided to look for White Vinyl sheets known as Flex here which has a rough crisscross on one side and a smooth surface on the other with both sides white in Colour,these are used in Advertising and Banner making by digitally printing on to the vinyl......This Flex comes in a roll of 7 feet wide and a meter or 3.25 feet would cost 100Rs. aprox around 2 dollars.
I plan to use this material but still would like to know how Black out cloth looks like.....Is it a thick cloth like material with a canvas like backside???or is it also like vinyl plastic type???
Another material I looked up in the market was painting canvas which is white coated on one side which was twice in rate compared to Vinyl Flex.
As I had another interest before projection mainly aeromodeling ......Rains in Mumbai!! so aeromodel flying is dormant for me now......But my building material Depron makes a stand by screen for now.
What are those commercial projector screens made of and why are they so very expensive???
Where could I find photos of how Black Out cloth really looks or how about some pictures of DIY screens.

Not anymore. You might be able to find it at a local fabric store or try joann.com. They have a 50% off coupon you can use right now on the site. (Usually it's 40% off).

@planejon, the link in my signature to the stripping guide has screen shots onto a screen made of black out cloth. The cloth is woven like canvas but is very lightweight and is cream colored (usually). The plastic side is flexible and bright white. The entire fabric is roughly 1/10th mm thick.

But the vinyl Flex you're talking about sounds like it would work just fine. And if it's less expensive, why not go with that.

I live in Hyderbad, I bought blackout cloth from US and using it, it is thickish rubberrish cloth, that does not allow light to pass through. did you use the vinyl flex option how did it go.

Here is another option ,and cheap, painters cloth ,, It is a yellowish tint, and the one I have is 12 x 8 cost 25 bucks. I use this outside .

I bought the BOC from Joann....works pretty well...but because it is an Ecru (slightly yellow) white color, everything leans towards a green yellow cast. Does this stuff come in a plain white or gray? I didn't see any other BOC at JoAnn than this....

Check out Walmart. I got my blackout cloth from there, and it's the same white cloth on the front and back.

I went to buy blackout cloth from my local store, however they have similar fabrics instead of blackout cloth.

The first is 100% Polyester 3 pass backing.
The second is a mix of Poly and Cotton with 3 pass backing.

I cannot take samples so I would like to know which one would be better.

I know what you mean and IÃÍl have look into its properties because the screen LCR or five screen speakers need to be placed behind not in front not visible speaker from the front!

IÃÎ not sure how transparent this will be and what the tradeoffs will be with sound high frequencies or any for that matter as it looks kinder dense from one link to picture that I saw and if I seem to recall I think it will only allow a minimal light to pass though at close range or am I mistaken?

IÃÍl be looking into a fabric store show today around the early morning hours to weigh up what I can get away with, without paying silly Stewart SMX prices for over costly screens.
