I was browsing round my local hardware store yesterday, and found a large bowl in the sale section.
I bought it because it reminded me of something,(and it was reduced from£30 to £6!)
The wife hates it,but I thought it was interesting.
A mutated trimmed down norpro reflector?????

Freaky!! biggrin.gif

I must say your choice of pics from DOA4 is very hmmm what's the word interesting wink.gif Might just make me go out and get an 360. The only game I currently have filled with such boucing pixelated joy is Rumble Roses. When geeks + girls=B Physics (you can substitute boobs or bounce in there. I'll just be interested in how well you can actualy play the game now. Not sure if there are any flight games on the 360 yet but if you do hapen to pic on up please post a pic.
pun15her
He he...
The backdrops on DOA are amazing,I will endeavour to get some more pics up tonight.
Also,I bought myself a digital temp probe yesterday,so I hope to get some accurate readings too.
My existing temp guages are not reading accurateley due to being on the same circuit as the lamp electrics!
It will be nice to know, after a year, how hot she really is getting! ohmy.gif

I didn't cut it!
It came like that!! huh.gif
And the bad news is...It is huge, and I mean HUGE!!
It is 9" tall,by 13" accross!!
It was sold with a description of "log carrier!"
It is not at all spherical, just a chunk of wierdly shaped aluminium!!
It just reminded me a bit of a cut down norpro,so I bought it!! tongue.gif

Sure pun15her,

Got MSN Messenger or an email address I can shoot them off to?

Wouldn't mind working with you a bit more to get some better drawings done if you want to.

Since the pro lens kit is coming soon I wouldn't mind trying to get a 17" version drawn up - since suitable 17" LCD's are actually able to be purchased in Australia!

I love this project and was looking for the project write up if it has been done. I would love to be able to print out the plans for this and run down to the local hardware store and buy as much as posible so I can get started.

This project kinda ambled along at a snails pace, changing all the time,so there were no plans pre-drawn unfortunateley!
Several of this type have now been built,if you have a search through the plogs, there are a couple that may give you the info you need.

Now whack that badboy into the hole with a big hammer!!!
Turn the mdf over half way through the whacking period to ensure squareness with the mdf.

Assemble and glue the scrap mdf together, and bobs your unkle!
This is a really apalling description. My apollogies,I have had only a spare 30 mins today, really wanted to get this done, please let me know what I can do to make up for my inadequacys,I am a lowly worm, lick, lick, lick, lick blink.gif blink.gif blink.gif

Sorry but I am not clear on this. These to pieces are glued and the nut is fixed tight in between them. I assume you mean to explain that the lens would be attached to this glued wood panel and the other end of the threaded rod would be fixed tightened so there is no moment. According to the photo the top of the small wood would provide friction so it would be a no go. Can I assume you mean these nuts must go on both sides of each piece of wood. Another words 2 on the inside and 2 on the outside wedged in that matter.

Maybe im over thinking this. Why even bother glueing the small piece of wood to the other? The nut wegded in there would secure the wood from moving. You just need to now twist the bolt and the wood with the wedged nut will move.
Please explain.
Etacovda
the nut will require being held from above. MDF is weak as crap.

Either that or buy some T nuts of the correct thread.
pun15her
Yep,a T nut would be a simpler solution. At the time I was just working with what I had lying around.
There are many ways to achieve the desired effect, and in hind sight,my way is not the easiest,or most effective solution, but it worked fine, and is still fully functional today! smile.gif
MDF is weak, but in this application,ie;held in place with the drawer sliders,it doesn't move in any plane that puts stress on the joint.
I like the T nut solution, nice and simple. Were I to do it again (And I probably will!) I would go with that idea, thanks Etacovda! smile.gif

Pun15her,

I just had to comment on you’re Pjs, and WOW blink.gif does not quite cover it. I love this PJ case that you made, and the cube it really starting to look very cool as well. I only wish I had your skills and talent!! sad.gif

Question: Do you have plans (drawings with measurements) for this? Would you be willing to make me a case if I paid you for it? If not, would it be OK if I had someone else make me one (ie TESCORP)???

Thanks,

All measurements are in the plog somewhere!!
A couple of people have come up with some cad drawings too.
But no,no finite plans,unfortunateley.

I would suggest building the frames on the threaded rod first, then have the box made to those dimensions.

Hey,Dave.
Glad to hear things are coming along.
I am sorry my plog is a bit confusing. The design changes as the build progresses.
To clarify...
The "Image bank" sits tightly against the back wall of the enclosure. There is a piece of mdf,as tall as the lower fresnel mount,at the front. This piece seals the airflow circuit, forcing the air inbetween the lcd and lower fresnel.I will try and dig out a pic.
Again, sorry for any confusion. My plog was not made as a build guide, but as a description of my particular build process.I am very flattered that my design is helpful to others, but the plog is not layed out very well for would be builders of the box,However,I am only too happy to answer,to the best of my ability, any questions.Keep em comin'!!!! smile.gif

Edit...pics...

Hope these pics illustrate the position of the image bank in the box.
Nothing is glued or screwed.the image bank is "wedged" in place by the mdf piece in front, against the 2 x vertical side pillars.

But the intake is at the front correct through the large diameter lower hole which is lower then the lcd. So the air is pulled in up and accross lcd. Ok. But I dont see anything at the front of the box preventing this air from leaking upwards. Do you have a wood piece there or something? Where is it?

Pun15er,

I have a few questions.
How are you securing the image bank inside?
How are securing the doors?
dhepburn
Hi Pun15her,
Great build - lots of reading with your plog now on 64 pages!
Couple of things I couldn't see explained (or maybe I missed them)...

1. Did you cut your fresnels to match the same size of your LCD panel? I can workout from your photos that the frame for the fresnels & the LCD are all the same size so I'm guessing you did have to cut them, right?

2. What are you using to attach the piece of MDF (that "boxes in" the light source/air flow) to the threaded rods? The piece I'm referring to runs from the light source to the LCD frame.

Forgive me if these are basic questions (take a look to the left and see the word "Newbie").

Hi,dracul2006.
The image bank is secured inside the case by the mdf sheet that is part of the airflow circuit. It sits tightly against the image bank and the 2 foreward support struts.
The 2 side doors have lips at the top that slot under the top sides, then there are 2 screws at the bottom of each side.

As for the previous question, there is nothing to stop air leaking upward. The fans on the bottom drag all the air they need from the intake hole on the front, through the lcd slot, down through the lamp chamber and out the back.I didnt see the point of closing that specific area off,as I dont think it needs to be closed to work as designed.
Hope that helps. smile.gif

No sweat,dhepburn.
When I built the PJ,the standard fresnels were the same size as the lcd, with cut corners,so I didn't need to cut them. But you would need to cut the current standard fresnels I believe,as the frames are all the same size.

Theat piece of mdf sits tightly in place, holding the image bank tight against the back wall of the box,and presses against the bottom of the 2 front support struts. That piece has to be slid out to be able to move the image bank.

Hope that answers your questions.Dont hesitate to ask if you have any more! smile.gif

Pun15her,
So the mdf piece of the image bank is secured to the walls of the box via L bracket? Do you have any photos of this?
pun15her
Very rough diagram.
The red piece is held tightly,no brackets at all.It is not secured, but held in place by the bank itself and the foreward supports.

Hope that helps.
There is no reason why you shouldn't add an l bracket to hold it in place if you want to.

Hi,kiat. Dont worry,no problem.
A normal mirror has the reflective surface mounted BEHIND the sheet of glass, where as a front surface mirror has the reflective surface in front of the glass.
Using a rear surface mirror in a pj,will mean that the image will be bounced off the reflective surface behind the glass, but will also be reflected to a lesser degree off the front surface of the glass too, giving two images, and causing ghosting (a slight double image) on the final screen.
It may be worth giving it a go,for cost and availability reasons though. You may find that it is not even noticeable.
It would be interesting to see! smile.gif
Good luck.
Cheers P smile.gif

ive got a punisher style projector.. and i used a FS mirror with it.. but as i was building i put the mirror i backwards to protect the FS side of the mirror, so essentially i was using a regular mirror.

There was a definate double image.. it really got annoying.. i doubt you will be happy watching a DVD or something with a double image, its very distracting.

I highly suggest you invest the $34 for a FS mirror.. It makes a world of difference in image quality.

Here is a pic of the mdf sheet.it has been removed to show there are no brackets.

Here is the lower portion of the box, with the sheet in place...

And here is the same pic, with the sheet has been removed...

The front supports are the curved columns of mdf that run top to bottom at the very front of the box,and are a structural part of the enclosure. The mdf sheet slides between them and the frames that hold the fresnels and reflector in the image bank.
Hope that helps,dracul.
Please let me know if it is still not clear.

Yes dracul,it is just jammed in.
It acts like a wedge, and holds it all together nice and tight.
It actually works really well. smile.gif
You could fix it to the image bank,or front supports if you wanted to,but you wouldn't quite get that wedging effect.

I have been thinking about this recently, and I havee come up with an idea...
I have a couple of large sheets of mdf lying around at the mo,so I can mark out a 1:1 scale plan of the parts for the enclosure, and a 1:1 scale diagram of how they fit together.
I will will then photograph them and post them.

Hi Puni5her. I've looked all through your massive plog and I admit I may have missed it but I'm looking for the dimensions of your LCD circuit board mount. I have the same monitor and I am copying your design (royalties paid later) and this is the one piece of info nobody has asked yet (I think).

Kudos for the unreal design.

Hi,dhepburn! smile.gif
The lcd frame is the basis of the size of all the other pieces,my lcd sits in its original bezel, which is...
327mm x 248mm,as best as I can measure it in situ!
The fresnel frames are made to the same size, and that in turn gives the width of the enclosure,as the side walls keep the frames air tight, apart from the cooling slots.
I am not sure of the size of the current fresnels, mine fitted without cutting, but the size may be different by now.

Hope that helps,Cheers P smile.gif
