I an making a "guard" out of the side panel of an old pc:

But.... I have realised that jigsaw blades made for wood dont last very long when cutting mild steel:Oh well,it will have to wait until tomorrow!
Anyway,thats it for now.Thanks for all your help,chaps! blink.gif

Forgive me for clogging your plog - but I just remembered what your design reminds me of: The very famous Burj Al Arab hotel in Dubai, built to resemble a sail, where the *ordinary* rooms come at $ 10 000 a night. Seven stars, suites only, and whatever looks like gold inside, is. It is said that it must be fully booked for several hundred years just to break even. The smallest rooms are a meagre 1800 sqf, the top suite a more accommodating 8350 sqf, over two floors (with an elevator, of course).

I love your design, naturally. My next projector will also be vertical, probably with a OHP style elevated mirror. Maybe. Or perhaps a Dalek shape? Must kill, must kill!
pun15her
I welcome anyone clogging up my plog,I see what you mean about the hotel, very similar lines.HOW MUCH!! ohmy.gif
I have been checking out your plog too, like your focus mech, and it all looks v-neat and tidy.(may have to borrow your button extension idea!!!) biggrin.gif

DOH!... Me and my big mouth.....DOH!... biggrin.gif

HOLY CRAP!!! The resemblence is too too funny!!! But, again, it just reafirms that it is a very visually pleasing design.

Last post on this theme, I promise! Forgive my newbie Photoshop skills, this is just a hommage to a great design and a great plog.
pun15her
Woah!!!!!!!!
That is excellent,Norwegian.
That is funniest thing I've seen in ages!! biggrin.gif

Just a minor update, have been sanding the box bit by bit over the last couple of days, and working on the cooling side of things.
Fabricated a guard out of an old computer side panel:

Cut using a jigsaw, and bent using a vice and a hammer.
pun15her
Here is anothe r pic painted:

Here it is in position. The guard is secured with 6 bolts.

Here is a closer look:

I just hope that the 2x pcac's inside, don't get fried.Does anyone think that they are in danger?
Just as a footnote I have been looking at my focusing mech and have decided that the piece of model aeroplane fuel tube that I was going to use as a universal joint has too much slop in it to give accurate adjustments,so...

This is the business end of an old rc boat I made about 7 or 8 years ago.The only water it has ever seen was in the bath, during testing. sad.gif
It has a rather nice universal joint incorporated into the drivetrain,hhmmmm...
pun15her
Here it is removed from its home. sad.gif

This is the setup as it is at the moment:

And here is the setup replaced with the proper u/j:

This should give me a more accurate responce transferred from the motor, through to the triplett lens carrier.
Just as a reminder, this is how the whole mech will work:

Ok,thats it for now!
Pentarix
Awesome, can't wait to see how yours turns out! tongue.gif I purchased the same miniature multi-ratio gearbox and had it shipped to Canada because it was the best I could find anywhere! I liked how you mounted the controls for it, since mine will be in a table, I may have to get a bit creative in order to make the buttons fit into thier surroundings. Keep it up Pun15her!
tj101
speaking of boats in the tub....yes I built a cardboard ORCA and outfitted it with a Quint, Hooper, and Brody (modified from Star Wars action figures) and sank it in the tub with the help of a rubber shark. HOWEvER!!! My brothers (18 years difference between us) built plastic battleships and would BOMB them in the bath tub with lighter fluid and matches!!! My mom said she came home and there was thick black plastic smoke clinging to the ceiling.

I was the good son biggrin.gif
Haku
*puts on a straight face*

I love your focusing mechanism.

biggrin.gif

seriously I may have to stea..ahem borrow that idea for my projector smile.gif
pun15her
Pentarix,I rushed to get a video uf the assembled focus mech moving yesterday,it is working very well, but I cant find a way of getting it online,I am using nvu if anyone can help!).Got some of this today(after much searching):

It is rated to 260' ,should be fine!
Tj,you have crossed the line between being a Jaws fan and being a disturbed individual!!!!! biggrin.gif
oh well dont seem to have had 5 mins to spare this week so far.(is it still only monday?)
I need some time to put aside for my pj,but I am going to have to pay some attention to my family for a change.
vroom
If you need it hosted, send me an e-mail. skyeg {at} sio.midco.net. I can also compress it if it's too large.

awww man
pun15her
vroom you are a gent and a scholar,I will do.It will have to be tomorrow I'm afraid
but thanks
foamcows
I worry that the evercool fans are not going to be able to move the air around your box as efficient as you would like. They do move a ton of air, but not when they are working against a vacuum or a pressurized chamber, a few members have had problems with overheating.
pun15her
foamcows,I worry about that too.But I figure that once it is up and running,I will deal with problems as I find them.
I have kept the holes as stated going through the image bank, but they are bigger elsewhere,I hope that will ease the work that they have to do???

But, remember, there being 18 years difference between me and my brothers, I was essentially an only child, and thus, needed to find amusement on my own terms.....hell, who am I kidding, I am a disturbed individual biggrin.gif

Remind me to tell you about the time I created an iceberg by freezing water in a ziplock bag and then re-enacting the sinking of the Titanic with a 14" Revell model.

hey pun15her

have you ordered your FS mirror yet.
If not i hava superb rectangular mirror that comes in its own housing. In fact it was used exactly for the same purpose in a Liesegang 400watt OHP

You pay just the postage and its yours..

rolleyes.gif
pun15her
Damn,Foxy.Sent the cheque off on saturday!!
Blooming typical. Was it an FS mirror?
Are you building an LL pj?
Where are you based?
How did your OHP pj turn out,I presume it was not brilliant if you are dismantling it??? smile.gif
foxy2000
damn shame pun15her!

Im actually UK based so the postage might have been a little steep anyhow

Im doing rather an interesting project.
I have totally rehoused a leisegang 400watt (4300 lum) OHP and mounted it a LL style MDF enclosure..ive used the optics form the ohp and the combined frensel too.

Being able to seal off the unit completely has given me sdome pretty good results..
Once I've got this up and running proper I'll invest in a MH light setup but my results are pretty surprising so far..ill be posting a PLOG pretty soon with the whole proocess and some results..

heres a sneak preview of what ive been up to..sorry about some of the image qualitys, as a few were taken with a phone cam!

Glad to meet a fellow UK builder smile.gif

I moved to the seaside about 2 years ago. biggrin.gif

hey pun15her

have you ever had to cut fresnels? wondered if you had any advice on that front?
pun15her
No,never have!From what I can gather,its a case of scoring and snapping,but tj101 had an accident recently doing exactly that,check out his plog...Ouch! sad.gif

that focus clip is way cool! looking at my first attempt again...I could have christened it "Fat Boy" after Harrison Ford's ice from fire device in The Mosquito Coast smile.gif
pun15her
Thanks vroom, much appreciated.I am really happy with how it has turned out. I hope more people try it.Its pretty simple, construction wise.No expertise needed at all.Seriously,if you can even consider building a pj,then this part is easy! focus video biggrin.gif
Pentarix
That's so freaking sweet Pun15her!!!

How exactly did you get the motor to move the wood which is housing the lens? Is the rod which slides through it threaded or something? I've got all the parts and might be able to figure it out but with your help I'm hoping to get it working as great as yours is!

This thing looks amazing, you've definetly set a whole new standard for the vertical PJ!
GadgetSmith
That is just too cool. Really professional. I have a feeling we may be seeing more of this design in the near future... like my own projector ! wink.gif

Thanks and keep it coming !
Haku
pun15her, great video clip of a great projector mod there, how much forward/back movement do you get with the focus mechanism?
I have a dead CDRom drive here I'm going to hack apart for my focusing mechanism and am wondering how much movement to give the lens. Luckily the tray is black plastic instead of the usual off-white so I won't have to paint it.
pun15her
I have rigged it up for around 3" of travel,a bit excessive,I know, but you never know what is round the corner!
I will post a focus mech diagram as soon as I get 5 mins to spare Pentarix,It really is a breeze biggrin.gif
mcad_c@att.net
Very nice!
pun15her
Picked this up today, very impressed, but it means that I will now have to re-think the control panel! sad.gif (I wanted to do it anyway.)
I think this is a very cool bit of kit, blue backlit lcd,2xtemp sensors, alarms for excess temperatures, and teeny tiny iddy biddy!!! biggrin.gif

Backlight is better than it looks, camera flash etc etc...
Plus my camera seems worse than ever today, its only a 1.3m fuji a101.A real piece of s**t.
pun15her
Ok,This is an attempt to explain the focus mech, thanks to vroom posting the vid of the mech.

This hopefully shows that rotation of the threaded rod,in either direction, makes the nut (as long as it is held, say between your fingers)move up and down the rod.

This is a pic of 2 scraps of mdf, appologies for the crap pics ,there are 2x5mm drilled holes straight through each.

Next find a drill bit a bit smaller than the nut you want to make captive!!!!

Drill only half way through the piece of mdf,so there is a 5mm hole, and an 8mm recess in the mdf.
pun15her

Now whack that badboy into the hole with a big hammer!!!
Turn the mdf over half way through the whacking period to ensure squareness with the mdf.

Assemble and glue the scrap mdf together, and bobs your unkle!
This is a really apalling description. My apollogies,I have had only a spare 30 mins today, really wanted to get this done, please let me know what I can do to make up for my inadequacys,I am a lowly worm, lick, lick, lick, lick blink.gif blink.gif blink.gif
pun15her
I have also drunk a whole bottle of red wine, gurgle, gurgle gurgle!
