Fraggin
Pretty much started off as a collection of 'junk'..

Fraggin
Construction began one fine cold weekend. Here is a consturction of the adjustable famous box in box design for the triplet.

Fraggin
The backside...

Fraggin
A Whole day was required in getting the enclosure constructed and mogul mounted...

Fraggin
Salvaged AC Fan {Later Scrapped}

Fraggin
First Fire.. No sparks, or explosions...

Fraggin
Bulb slightly off center... Finished build before I adjusted the bulb. This much off center accounts for about 50% brightness.

Fraggin
Lenses, and LCD in place. This was a stopping point after about 35 hours in one weekend. I could not think any longer.

Fraggin
Crappy camera and crappy photography skills. This shows you how large the Enzo Ferrari is in Project Gotham II. You can tell that I moved right when the pic snapped. I will take some better pics when I get a better camera.

any particular games to be played on this nice lookin PJ?
Fraggin
My son is 17Months and has the worlds stickiest most inquisitive fingers. So, here is the Monolith. When my son is around, the PJ gets scared and can close himself up in his shell....

Fraggin
The PJ is peeking out to see if the coast is clear...
(the yellow pages are temporary. But, at least they finnally serve a purpose. Thank you lord for 411 and switchboard.com.

Fraggin
The monolith granting an all access pass....

Fraggin
The keyboard try in it's upright position and a shot of the rear and a semishot of the kick ass howard industries air mover...

Should I stain or paint?
Plywood is really not good for staining, but the guys at HD picked out the sheets for me when I told them what I was doing and I got some good looking wood.
slayer1660
it seems to have a nice finish on it, id mabye to a light oak stain, nothing to dark. thats just my favorite stain. dark woods to me are ugly
Cold Steel
they make a 3/4 iron on oak strip for the edges at Lowes. It really works great and stains good too. great job. I'm a stain guy btw.

If you use a pre-stain conditioner on the wood before you stain it it will take the stain evenly. I believe you can put multiple coats on if its real bad. Here is a link. You can get it at HD or Lowes for about $5.
Fraggin
Cool. I will look into that. The edge strip will definitley have to go on there to hide layers...

I didn't show a pic of the top, but it has 1/2 strips around each side so that you just sit in on top, and it doesn't slide around. My wife says it is wonderful for "perching".

thanks for the reccomendations, I may do some staining this weekend.

how big is your image??

and does projecting from such an extreme angle force you to tilt your screen down a little??

In widescreen mode it is 108" wide. I have not measured it diagonally. I have about three inches of width difference on each side between the top of the image and the bottom of the image with the screen at 90 degrees. Since I'll be constructing a roll down screen, I would like to try to correct the keystone inside the pj. Right now, my front fresnel is 1mm from the LCD at the bottom and about 35 millimeters from the LCD at the top. The image is good at this angle. If I move the top more than that, I can see lines appear during fast movement in bright pictures.
Putting an angle on the triplet helps some, but more than anything, it just moves the entire picture up or down. I have not attempted to angle the LCD yet, I would have to do some mods on my enclosure.
I am letting gravity take care of what keystoning correction I have, it seems to work fine so far.
The keystoning is not really noticeable, but can still be pointed out.

vga over wireless would be nice in this instance.

Hey Fraggin....nice box, almost looks like a real coffee table :-) It also allows more room for better cooling methods, by the way, how is your cooling? I'm gonna be using a similar design to put under my pool table. but I didn't notice any switches for the fans/lamp, are you running those directly to a surge protector or what?

Congrats!
Fraggin
Thanks...

No switches at the moment, I have the fan and LCD on a different circuit than the ballast. Two different surge protectors. I will buy a dremmel soon to install these.

The cooling is fine. However, my fan is wayyy above spec. It's 4.5 inches wide and pulls 20 watts at .4 amps. for 120V AC. My cieling has cross beams that are compliment the wood block walls, so I couldn't get away with hanging it. I knew it would end up concealed, So I didn't skimp on the air movement. It is louder than a PC fan, but, it's not too noticeable with the Dolby 5.1 kickin'.

Good luck with your build..

After seeing one blurry shot of PGR2 I just realized I can't wait to play Forza Motorsport on a HUGE screen. I haven't been this excited to play a game since HL2 was announced to ship Sept 30 (2003), whereupon I promptly ran out and bought a 9600XT for the superior DX9 performance compared to Nvidia's best offerings (now previous gen), and of course, the HL2 voucher. Hell, I just want to play PGR2 and Rallisport Challenge 2 on the big screen. Time to dig out my racing wheel.

Looks like you did a bang up job dude. I look forward to seeing sharper images of the projector in action. So are you going to do anything to the top of the 'coffee table'? I think a nice oil finish on 1/2" cherry would look nice.
Fraggin
Thanks...
I will probably go out later today and select either a stain or oil to dress up this bohemoth a bit....
As far as getting a better pic, I will look at my camera settings and see if I can snap a good one...
PGR2 is amazing on the big screen. Especially in First person view......
It adds a bit more challenge to it because the screen is actually big enough to allow you to enjoy the views of the landscapes as you're racing...
Fraggin
Ok Guys,
It's been a while, and has been fun, but the projector needs a new home.
I will most likley sale in parts to ensure the survival of the compenents.

If anyone is interested, let me know.
Thanks
I may also create a new for sale thread.
