Well it looks like these $100 laptops might become a reality. The concept seems sound. read the article in USA Today Feb 9th 2005 edition.

It is based on projection TV technology.

1) a 17"inch projection screen in the laptop recieving the image from a small 1000 x1000 video chip.

2) Use a 1 gig memory chip running Linux. have no hard drive. (try a LIVE CD with LINUX and you will see you just need 300 megs for all your applications via SLACKWARE POPCORN, and another 300 of ram).

3) use a WIFI chip for connectivity, or a CELLPHONE chip.

4) Use NIMH rechargeable AA batteries, or a small hand crank spring loaded generator, or both to power it. Maybe even a solar charger on the case.

5) Make it completely shock proof. Through it at a wall. Run over it. It still works!!

6) Maybe make it subscription based, and get it for free!! just have to be willing to site through a rolling advertisement (demographic focused of course) on maybe 1/10th of the screen.

Seems to me like it would be better to have a regular laptop. They cant even make a $100 computer without using shitty outdated parts, I dont think a laptop would be possible at that pricepoint.

I'll bet this PJ system will be a LED array and some kind of DLP technology.

Sounds remarkably ignorant of technical/market limitations.

Like using a bunch of nimh batteries, rather than lithium ion. Or using a 17" panel that costs more than $100 to manufacture. Extolling shock proof as an inovation rather than a feature. (I have a shock proof laptop, not cheap).
